If you go to season 1 (maybe season 2) of High Stakes Poker, which is a cash game rather than a tourney, Hellmuth makes a fool of himself with amateurish play. The other players, particularly Daniel Negreanu, treat him like fresh meat.
I'll agree that he may be the greatest tournament player ever, which is like saying he's the best Triple A baseball player ever. Tournament holdem is a lower form of poker. Late in tournaments, the rising blinds prevent one from maneuvering as completely as one would in cash games and luck plays a far bigger role. In high stakes cash games, a typical pot far exceeds the $10,000 entry fee for the WSOP main event. His performance on High Stakes Poker was laughable.
If cash game NL was the old Cadillac of poker, big tournament poker is the new Ferrari. I love cash games, but a great tournament player can make just as big of a payday consistently with much less overhead risk.
Anyone can tilt at a cash table, reload and come back stronger...but it takes an incredible player to suffer setbacks in a freezeout and still persevere.

There are different strategies used in cash games and tournaments, and Hellmuth has made a lot of money as a top notch tournament player.
I agree he is marketed well, but you make it sound like he is ALL marketing and no substance....10 bracelets say otherwise.
