I think if I was going to make an uninsightful and reductive comparison to a better-know band I'd probably have gone with Talking Heads rather than Devo...?
Don't know about Devo, don't really like them. Too cartoonish and silly for my taste but "Bucket Rider" sounds like it could have been taken straight from the Feelies' "Crazy Rhythms". It's the guitar sound and the drums!
Yes, this does certainly sound like Devo...but they definitely went off in a more melodic and pop sounding direction in their '83 album. It's the (only) one I like from them. So what, right...!
is there a complete polyrock show on dvd? is it available yet,if there is? i must aquire it! great stuff! hey, philip glass! thanks for the autograph in front of paul's burger joint,on second ave. your son must love that siver scooter he was riding on. hope you and your family enjoyed your evening, then. anyway, i attached the auto to a copy of koyannisqatsi, that i have. you're a genius! come back, polyrock! where'd ya go??? we need you guys, today! music sucks without your inventivness!!
i seen devo live and i have seen polyrock live they are not the same type of music they both could be considered -new wave - but they are differant in their performance , some idiots tried to start slam dancing at polyrock and where quickly shouted down from the floor and stage , i guess they thought polyrock was a slam dance band ,
Who cares if it sounds like Devo? Even Devo were influenced by Kraftwerk. Even the most innovative groups have their inspirations. The fact that they put the effort into making the song shows they have innovation of their own and talent.
At least, Devo's Kraftwerk inspiration started with their more synthesizer synthpop albums, anyway, but thats beside the point.
I remember seeing this video back around 81-82 and thinking then that it sounded like early DEVO. Hearing it again all these years later, and that's still how I see it. I like this tune, it's got that late 70's quirky new wave sound to it.
@899289 True, Devo formed in 1970 and certainly put out records before Polyrock. Not at all a stretch to think Polyrock were influenced by them, but still, it doesn't take away from the technical chops it took to make something this good. At least they had the sense to follow the lead of a fairly obscure (at the time) up and coming band of misfits rather than being yet another amongst the still creeping horde of zombies that can't see past the beatles.
So cool and distinctive! And different from the couple records I have by them. For those who dunno, Philip Glass is the keyboardist seen here. I love how simple the video is....makes the performance more powerful. Thanks 4 posting this!
I saw this video over 25 years ago, ran out and found the first album and have been a fan ever since. Though I never saw this again until now, this has always been one of my favorite songs. THANK YOU
Thank God someone put this up I havent seen this since 1980 late night video show in Millwaukee WI called Rock World- they played this and Romantic Me plus Ultravox's Sleepwalk- man what a great time to be in Jr High School!! Thank the CD Gods that the albums are finally out on CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Devo was putting out records before 1979 and while this is a catchy tune, it sounds very DEVO influenced. DEVO was around long before these guys.
899289 3 years ago
agreed but they weren't really getting radio play sp here in NY they weren't heard untill about 1980-81

Sounds to me like they want to be DEVO!
899289 3 years ago
except that they wrote and played their songs before they heard of Devo. This song came out in 1979.

Only this song and maybe another song but...
DEVO wanted to be like VON LMO :)
