no. no luck. i have done it more than once. but you can call it luck if no starflowers fall on other. you just start with the bottom(so all pieces that are standing on the bottom of the screen), and then you continue with the rest of the layers the same way 'till it's finished

thats amazing! i've only just started playing hexic and find it hard enough to get the stars, my best is seven on screen, but to organize THAT? Is it like chess where you have to see many moves in front? is some of it luck?
