Los Angeles, CA - October 16, 2008 - Ben Stein's film "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed," the #12 biggest box office documentary in HISTORY. If thats your definition of having your ass kicked whats your definition of success?
Successful predictions: Paleontologists used evolutionary predictions to find the tiktaalik fossil--they knew the oldest creatures with the tetrapod forelimb had been found in a place in Canada, but all those forelimbs were fully formed. Scientists hypothesized that, if evolution were true, there would have to be a precursor to the full forelimb. They dug in Canada, and, surprise!, they found a critter with a fin, but with the tetrapod forelimb bones INSIDE the fin.
Evolution posits common descent of ALL animals. I was merely pointing out a successful prediction of that part of the theory.
Darwin also predicted ape-human transitional fossils. Australopithecus afarensis, austrolopithecus africanus, homo habilis, and homo erectus are all examples of this prediction being shown true. These fossils show adaptation to bipedialism, increasing brain capacity, adapting jaw structures, etc., etc. God bless.
It supports the theory of evolution, which is the same theory that says millions of years ago humans' ancestors were ape like creatures. It is extremely relevant.
Last night I viewed Expelled for the first time. It was apparent that Richard Dawkins was rattled badly. Ben Stein was masterful at attacking pertinent questions, and this finally resulted in Dawkins claiming that life could have been brought to earth through aliens. The audience gasped at that fact.
"It was apparent that Richard Dawkins was rattled badly"
Rattled? He seemed more confused to me. Keep in mind, Dawkins isn't one of those scientists who debates evolution; he views it as a settled issue (he is British after all). Dawkins didn't even know the video was going to an anti-evolution film, so I can't imagine why any question would "rattle" him.
It is the creationists that are trying to keep people from finding answers to the great questions. This clip is dripping with irony and ignorance.
Fringe nutjobs should not be in a position where they can influence public policy to the point where science curriculums are tainted with ancient superstitions.
No evidence + no falsifiabilty + no predictions + no experiments = NOT SCIENCE!
People who do not understand this have no business speaking about scientific ideas or policies.
DGSB, what's funny about your answer is that my experience in highschool and college is that evolutionists suppress creationism all the time. Your words are dripping with irony and ignorance.
Creationism is not science. It does not belong in a Science or Biology curriculum any more than Astrology belongs in an Astronomy curriculum or Alchemy in a Chemistry curriculum.
It seems that creationists are simply incapable of understanding this simple fact despite the evidence for evolution and despite the lack of evidence for creationism. This is what a "delusion" is.
When a person succumbs so fully to a delusion like this, they may be incapable of coming out of it.
DGSB, in other words anything that has a naturalistic explanation is science. Little green men from Mars qualifies as a naturalistic theory. The problem is nobody has seen order come out of chaos, and thereby abiogenesis is not a science. Evolutionists attribute powers to nature that haven't been seen. Therefore it is based on faith. Additionally, don't you think we have the right to determine what is science? Why do evolutionists have that priviledge?
Order comes from chaos all the time. Put a glass of water in the freezer. The chaos of the motions of the water molocules is replaced by order as the water freezes.
Abiogenesis is a scientific concept but eludes most scientific methods of study.
Science is a discipline defined by the Scientific Method (look it up). What Creationists want to do is side-step the Scientific Method and teach Creationism as Science when it clearly isn't. Evolution falls under this description quite nicely.
Yes, science BY DEFINITION pertains to NATURAL processes. Little green men from Mars is not a Theory but a Hypothesis...& a bad one. As DGSB has stated, order does come from chaos all the time. Abiogenesis has been tested in a lab (See: Miller-Urey Experiment) Nobody's seen a baby grow age into an adult uninterupted--that doesn't mean it requires faith or is not science. On the contrary, mountains of evidence supports it, like the irrefutable DNA evidence. Cont'd...
You no more than you have the right to determine what science is than you do you have the right to determine that 2+2=5. Of course all this evolution talk is nothing more than a poor distraction from the fact that as little evidence as you think evolution has, ID still has infinitely less--nothing. Just "and then a miracle happened." ID-ots can't even think up a plausible experiment to test their claims at all, making any research money towards ID research a waste.
There are many good logic based arguments for creationism. Perhaps a little research into what they say could be beneficial before you condemn everything they say as folly.
I can't tell who you are replying to so I'll answer anyway.
I have done research. I was brought up exposed to Catholicism and Judaism. I read from Exodus at my Bar Mitzvah. Despite all this, I've been an atheist all my life.
"Evolution is being observed all the time in the evolved resistence of bacteria to drugs. That's just one of many examples."
Yeah, but no one has seen an ape like creature evolove into a human because no one has been around for millions of years. Despite the fact evolution is a scientific theory, it still takes faith into believeing, therefore its still a religion.
Ok... Cass, I guess I'll answer this one. No one has ever seen the Earth orbiting the sun; after all, we don't have a satellite above the sun monitoring the earth, so there's no objective proof that the earth orbits the sun. Therefore, the heliocentric model is a religion.
No one has ever seen an electron; therefore, modern atomic theory is a religion. No one has ever seen atoms fusing, so nuclear theory is a religion.
Religion is belief in the supernatural. Evolution is not a religion.
Evolution is a theory that takes a lot of faith to believe in. I'm sure theres people who seen the earth go around the sun. We have seasons so thats not to hard to believe. Atoms are just theories, but because we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaky, thats enough to convince me about Atoms, I guess you could call atoms a religion because it sill takes faith to believe in. Religion isn't necessarly belief in the supernatural, science could be a religion also.
Cassman, you obviously have no idea what a religion actually is. Look it up; you'll be surprised.
No, no one has ever seen the earth go around the sun. We know it does only by the accuracy of the mathematical models that assume that it does.
Fusion was a successful prediction of the atomic model, but paleontology uses evolution to make successful predictions of where bones should be in the ground all the time. Why is one brand of successful prediction good for you when the other isn't?
Cassman, evolution is not held to with ardor or faith; people believe it because of the EVIDENCE.
"...it uses predictions, which require faith." Cassman, I don't think you understood what I was saying; paleontologists use evolution to predict where fossils should be, and then dig in that area until they find the fossils they predicted. They find innumerable transitional fossils this way--like tiktaalik, for example.
You don't need to have faith a prophecy will come true if it ALREADY HAS!!!
Cass... is that supposed to be a joke? "Evidence of evolution" ranges from the incredible accuracy of evolutionary predictions, to nested hierarchies of physical traits, to genetic similarities, to atavisms.
Atavisms: Humans have the genes to grow full tails, complete with bones and underlying muscle structure. Chickens have the genes to grow teeth--and I mean mouthfuls of them.
Genetic similarities: Endogenous retroviral DNA has been found in identical places in both humans and ape genes. As integration is random and there are millions of possible entry sites, the likelihood of this happening by chance is statistically impossible.
"OK so are you telling me that we are related to chickens now?
Whats a retrovirus?"
Wow, you know, I was just calling you a moron to be mean, but... wow. You really are. Why do chickens have the genes to grow teeth? It makes perfect sense if they evolved from reptiles, but it makes no sense if an intelligent designer made them.
A retrovirus is a virus that encodes itself into DNA.
TO ALL THE CHRISTIAN, EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY!
...This is a clause in the "Treaty of Tripoli 1797" unanimously approved by the US Senate & signed by President John Adams!
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen...
Seriously, look it up and learn the true history of this great country!
To be honest w/you, Christianity (or at least its values) did influence the foundation of the US government. The whole reason why the US signed the Treaty of Tripoli was because many Muslim sailors were attacking American ships. The US didn't want to go to war so they made that treaty the way it is to appease the Muslim pirates.
"INFLUENCED" is the key word! Just as it was written in the Treaty of Tripoli America WAS NOT and IS NOT a Christian nation...It was founded as Secular Nation born out of the Enlightenment Period. Most of the "key" founding fathers were Deist/Masons, NOT CHRISTIANS. Our so-called motto of "In God We Trust" is new 1956. "One Nation Under God" was added to the Pledge in 1954. It is all BS that US is moving in such a destructive direction! HOPEFULLY this is starting to CHANGE!
so how about the declaration of independence that says uor rights are endowed by our creator. or back in the founding days where they started theyre sessions with a prayer. the theory that all our founding fathers were deists is just absurd.
You are very gullible and should really get to understand history before making an ass out of yourself by repeating what you read in your church's handouts!
hey fuckwad why dont you do yourself a favor and actually read the constitution. you might actually learn something. you know we thepeople hold these truths to be self evident... ill let you look the rest up yourself. by the way when did you drop out of school?.
well i dont know what american history you are studying but mine taught me that madison and jefferson were. i mean madison wasnt called the father of the constitution for nothing. you ought to read the federalist papers too. besides i thought were all for competing viewpoints in academia. thats what stein was arguing that they werent.
how do you that evolution is simply not the observation of gods hands working here on earth. really we christians cannot prove that god exists we haveto have faith. likewise atheists if they are honest with themselves cannot with certaintity say there is no god. so we both have our faiths. as far as church and state that exists so that te govt cannot establish an official church. thus the establishment cause in the first amendment. being a student of law im surprised you didnt catch that.
you just said that madison and jefferson were deist and believed in separation of church and state. i was making a point of what that means. for example if an elected official professes his or her faith that is not a violation of the establishment clause in the first amendment. some on the far left would disagree. however if the congress tries to pass a law that says you have to believe in a certain religion making it the official religion of the usa. that would be a violation. cont....
I agree, an elected official can openly express their faith. I would like to see an America where that is not needed in order to get elected. Plus, when elected officials do that is "can" alienate others of dif or no faith...But that is simply my opinion.
Now, trying to teach the Chrsitian creation myth in public schools is a violation! Unless, kids are taught the creation myths of all the major religions and some dead religions. Then its education, which I am all for.
on your other point i was making a general argument that an atheist has to have as much absolute faith that there is no god just as a christian does to believe. but the way you denegrate religion i wasnt sure if you were an atheist or agnostic.
My "hostility" toward religion may be over the top sometimes...However, it is in response to this insane war on science! Seriously, the only possible outcome or end game to teaching "god did it" to all of the unknown questions in our world is a breakdown in society. Scientific advanvcements will slow to halt and religion will become the only source for so-called answers and we both know where that leads...A society much like the middle east.
Did it ever dawn on you that your hostility may be fueled by the feeling of being threatened? And FYI, I went to a Christian School grades 5-9, not on one test about biology, or any other subjects was "God did it" That would be kinda a no brainer, it doesnt address the physiology of it. So I guess if Creationism leads to a society like the middle east, I guess Nazi Germany would be your ideal society?
My hostility is fueled by people who think America is a Christian Nation. Anyone who has studied the history of the Enlightenment Period through to the birth of America knows this country was founded to be a Secular Nation! With a distinct seperation of Church & State. It is not only written into our Constitution but it was clearly stated in other documents...I understand religion is very important to people. However, religion should be personal and not forced on anyone!!!
Well maybe I misunderstood u, even as a Christian I beleive in a seperation between the two ( although I do believe Church communities should have the right to be heard, thats just democracy) But "Expelled" isnt about any impaticular religion, its about the academic freedom to study ID without persicusion. I dont believe it should be forced on people any more than you do, I believe in a God, yes, I also believe God gave us free will.
I do have to disagree with you about "Expelled"...The movie was simply packed with lies and Ben Stein misled many scientist in the movie and we won't get into the power of editing.
There is no persecution! Talk like that is so absurd...If there is something that I simply laugh in confusion about is Christians claims of persecution in America! COME ON?!?!?
One last thing, What is there to "study" about ID? "god did it" and you have mastered the subject!
Signatures of ID in DNA coding, the vastness of time and space, the allignment of the solar system, the complexity oft the single cell organism. Oh, but what does any of that have to do with science?!!? What if we could be sure everything in existance had a purpose, & we found what each purpose was. What if every plant had some kind of healing property we didnt know about? I respect your right to disagree, but u lack vision IMO.
There is NOT ONE signature of ID in any DNA!! If there were it would be on the front pages of the NYT!
The vastness of time & space says nothing about a creator & the Cell evolved!
The vision comes from understanding what is sound science...Opinion is not science!
The problem with many Christians is they want something to be true so they say it is...When that does not work then they say they are being excluded from the science by arrogant Atheist who do not like opposing views. NOT TRUE!
Man u just dont get it do u? we've really just hit the tip of the iceberg, with DNA research, and Im not saying life doesnt evolve, youre using evolution as an answer to everthing, and it isnt!!! An opinion & a theory are two different things. And it is ture, people are constantaly under fire for beleive in ID, & wanting to study it, by people, like dawkins, hitchens ect. who act as dictators who want to attack anyone who disagrees with your neo darwinian rhetoric.
I am using Evolution as an answer to everything? Everything in the sense of how every lifeform on earth evolved? YES!
As for everything else there are fields of science for that as well.
The problem with ID is not that some are picking on people who support ID, there is no evidence for it...And PLEASE tell me what there is to study when it comes to ID other than "god did it"?
ID is a Christian idea born out of the creation myth of the Bible...It is not science nor can it be studied.
ID is promoted & funded through the Discovery Institute a Conservative Christian think tank. They lead the fight to get it forced into Public Schools & Universities because they know they do not have one shred of scientific evidence to support their claims.
You said you do not deny life evolved...Well, according to the Discovery Inst. you are not a true Christian! Maybe you do not claim to be? If not, then I do not see why you are defending ID as it has nothing to offer but Biblical Myth.
I want you to understand I am not trying to be rude. ID is not science and it can never be allowed to be classified as science. If it is then the entire idea of science will be compromised like never before. Science requires evidence, peer review and a lot of hard work. ID is none of that! ID is a religious attempt to defend a religion, nothing more. I know you made the claim it is not about any one religion but if you follow "whos who" in the ID crowd then Christianity is the driving force.
Well I'm not either, just stating my difference of opion. Dude, u need to understand, no one is trying to compramise science, or tell u what to believe. Just people searching for scientific evidence of an intelligent creator. Freedom of scientific research applies just as much to those u dont agree with as yourself. How would u feel if I was one of those Christians that was convinced the earth was only 6k yo, & I somehow conviced the dean to force everyone to work within those constructs?
If the ID crowd wants to enter the science areana then they have to provide evidence for their claims not demand their claims be heard or taught in public schools!!
Science is not about popularity of opinion!
Christians like to think this is the case so they can say they have an opinion too that must be heard...Science does not work this way!
No, Im pretty sure, Davinci, wasnt even a scientist, but he jump started the industrial revolution before it even happened. Science is science, & we cant afford this kind of ignorance where people tell others whats allowed and not allowed to be studied. You cant erase the possible of an intelligent designer by using Darwins theorys as athiest rhetoric.
It doesnt work that way, Neo-darwinism still leaves ALOT of questions, that some of us want answered.
Do what? Ignorance?Science does not tell people what can and cannot be studied...You watch to much Ben Stein & FOX News. You submit your work with evidence to support your work it...You don't just say I have a theory and by default it is considered to be an equal theory, THAT IS ABSURD!
If there is an Intelligent Designer then someone should present the evidence for peer review!
The problem is there is not a shred of evidence for a magical being who poofed the world into existence, period!
The fact that school boards down here in the south and the mid west are trying to teach kids that evolution is a lie is SCARY! America being born out of enlightenment thinkers has been the leader of the world in science and now we are behind in many fields. We can't let magic/superstition be taught in public schools! Religion needs to remain "personal" and within the tax havens of the churches! USA is the laughing stock of first world nations! Embarrassing!
I've got to watch this piece of shit.

how do you that evolution is simply not the observation of gods hands working here on earth. really we christians cannot prove that god exists we haveto have faith. likewise atheists if they are honest with themselves cannot with certaintity say there is no god. so we both have our faiths. as far as church and state that exists so that te govt cannot establish an official church. thus the establishment cause in the first amendment. being a student of law im surprised you didnt catch that.
jhamm999 3 years ago
WHAT?
I consider myself Agnostic toward any god/goddess just as I consider myself Agnostic toward faries/unicorns.
There is no faith involed...Where you get that I have no idea. Why or how would I have "faith" that there are no god/goddess/fairies/unicorns?
Did not catch seperation of church and state? Did you read what I wrote?
Religion has no place in gov. just as gov. has no place in religion...Its that simple.
I have no idea what your point was?
SkyDaddy7 3 years ago
you just said that madison and jefferson were deist and believed in separation of church and state. i was making a point of what that means. for example if an elected official professes his or her faith that is not a violation of the establishment clause in the first amendment. some on the far left would disagree. however if the congress tries to pass a law that says you have to believe in a certain religion making it the official religion of the usa. that would be a violation. cont....
jhamm999 3 years ago
I agree, an elected official can openly express their faith. I would like to see an America where that is not needed in order to get elected. Plus, when elected officials do that is "can" alienate others of dif or no faith...But that is simply my opinion.
Now, trying to teach the Chrsitian creation myth in public schools is a violation! Unless, kids are taught the creation myths of all the major religions and some dead religions. Then its education, which I am all for.
SkyDaddy7 3 years ago
on your other point i was making a general argument that an atheist has to have as much absolute faith that there is no god just as a christian does to believe. but the way you denegrate religion i wasnt sure if you were an atheist or agnostic.
jhamm999 3 years ago
My "hostility" toward religion may be over the top sometimes...However, it is in response to this insane war on science! Seriously, the only possible outcome or end game to teaching "god did it" to all of the unknown questions in our world is a breakdown in society. Scientific advanvcements will slow to halt and religion will become the only source for so-called answers and we both know where that leads...A society much like the middle east.
SkyDaddy7 3 years ago
Did it ever dawn on you that your hostility may be fueled by the feeling of being threatened? And FYI, I went to a Christian School grades 5-9, not on one test about biology, or any other subjects was "God did it" That would be kinda a no brainer, it doesnt address the physiology of it. So I guess if Creationism leads to a society like the middle east, I guess Nazi Germany would be your ideal society?
PsychoticSpasm 2 years ago
Do what?
My hostility is fueled by people who think America is a Christian Nation. Anyone who has studied the history of the Enlightenment Period through to the birth of America knows this country was founded to be a Secular Nation! With a distinct seperation of Church & State. It is not only written into our Constitution but it was clearly stated in other documents...I understand religion is very important to people. However, religion should be personal and not forced on anyone!!!
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
Well maybe I misunderstood u, even as a Christian I beleive in a seperation between the two ( although I do believe Church communities should have the right to be heard, thats just democracy) But "Expelled" isnt about any impaticular religion, its about the academic freedom to study ID without persicusion. I dont believe it should be forced on people any more than you do, I believe in a God, yes, I also believe God gave us free will.
PsychoticSpasm 2 years ago
See I am not so bad...
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
Signatures of ID in DNA coding, the vastness of time and space, the allignment of the solar system, the complexity oft the single cell organism. Oh, but what does any of that have to do with science?!!? What if we could be sure everything in existance had a purpose, & we found what each purpose was. What if every plant had some kind of healing property we didnt know about? I respect your right to disagree, but u lack vision IMO.
PsychoticSpasm 2 years ago
There is NOT ONE signature of ID in any DNA!! If there were it would be on the front pages of the NYT!
The vastness of time & space says nothing about a creator & the Cell evolved!
The vision comes from understanding what is sound science...Opinion is not science!
The problem with many Christians is they want something to be true so they say it is...When that does not work then they say they are being excluded from the science by arrogant Atheist who do not like opposing views. NOT TRUE!
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
Man u just dont get it do u? we've really just hit the tip of the iceberg, with DNA research, and Im not saying life doesnt evolve, youre using evolution as an answer to everthing, and it isnt!!! An opinion & a theory are two different things. And it is ture, people are constantaly under fire for beleive in ID, & wanting to study it, by people, like dawkins, hitchens ect. who act as dictators who want to attack anyone who disagrees with your neo darwinian rhetoric.
PsychoticSpasm 2 years ago
I am using Evolution as an answer to everything? Everything in the sense of how every lifeform on earth evolved? YES!
As for everything else there are fields of science for that as well.
The problem with ID is not that some are picking on people who support ID, there is no evidence for it...And PLEASE tell me what there is to study when it comes to ID other than "god did it"?
ID is a Christian idea born out of the creation myth of the Bible...It is not science nor can it be studied.
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
ID is promoted & funded through the Discovery Institute a Conservative Christian think tank. They lead the fight to get it forced into Public Schools & Universities because they know they do not have one shred of scientific evidence to support their claims.
You said you do not deny life evolved...Well, according to the Discovery Inst. you are not a true Christian! Maybe you do not claim to be? If not, then I do not see why you are defending ID as it has nothing to offer but Biblical Myth.
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
I want you to understand I am not trying to be rude. ID is not science and it can never be allowed to be classified as science. If it is then the entire idea of science will be compromised like never before. Science requires evidence, peer review and a lot of hard work. ID is none of that! ID is a religious attempt to defend a religion, nothing more. I know you made the claim it is not about any one religion but if you follow "whos who" in the ID crowd then Christianity is the driving force.
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
Well I'm not either, just stating my difference of opion. Dude, u need to understand, no one is trying to compramise science, or tell u what to believe. Just people searching for scientific evidence of an intelligent creator. Freedom of scientific research applies just as much to those u dont agree with as yourself. How would u feel if I was one of those Christians that was convinced the earth was only 6k yo, & I somehow conviced the dean to force everyone to work within those constructs?
PsychoticSpasm 2 years ago
"No one is trying to compromise science"
You have to be joking, right?
If the ID crowd wants to enter the science areana then they have to provide evidence for their claims not demand their claims be heard or taught in public schools!!
Science is not about popularity of opinion!
Christians like to think this is the case so they can say they have an opinion too that must be heard...Science does not work this way!
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
No, Im pretty sure, Davinci, wasnt even a scientist, but he jump started the industrial revolution before it even happened. Science is science, & we cant afford this kind of ignorance where people tell others whats allowed and not allowed to be studied. You cant erase the possible of an intelligent designer by using Darwins theorys as athiest rhetoric.
It doesnt work that way, Neo-darwinism still leaves ALOT of questions, that some of us want answered.
PsychoticSpasm 2 years ago
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
Lets say there is an Intelligent Designer...Now you have an even bigger problem to solve!
WHO DESIGNED THE DESIGNER?
You would have to answer that question.
SkyDaddy7 2 years ago
The fact that school boards down here in the south and the mid west are trying to teach kids that evolution is a lie is SCARY! America being born out of enlightenment thinkers has been the leader of the world in science and now we are behind in many fields. We can't let magic/superstition be taught in public schools! Religion needs to remain "personal" and within the tax havens of the churches! USA is the laughing stock of first world nations! Embarrassing!

We do have around 99.7% of our genes in common eith the currently living apes though.

Evolution isn't scientific. Science can be observed and repeated on command, neither is true with a 10 billion year long process.
rainbowfirewave 3 years ago
Evolution is a religion.
CASSMAN777 3 years ago
I find it a little funny when religious people try to insult evolution by calling it a religion. It isn't, of course.
