  • @Maafa1619 With all due respect, shut the hell up. It shouldn't matter at all what color the person playing is. The emotion from the person playing doesn't come from their skin, it comes from their hearts. And everyone's heart is the same color. If you disagree, then you don't what music is.

  • what's the song at 10:00?

  • what's the "eastern" group he is taling about?

  • What tuning does he use for the raga-style tunes?

  • @funeralapolis...his sg has diff pickups than a standard,, he has 57 classics in his sg s, which are my personal fav s too...also most any decent analog delay pedal sounds good

  • i wish i could make my guitar sound like a female singer the way he does

  • How does he achieve such an amazing tone? I have a Gibson SG and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, what pedal should I use to get that slapback delay he has?

  • @Funeralapolis He has a pure heart and soft hands. Mostly it's his fingers...

  • The guy is awesome. I've seen him several times with the Allman Brothers and he practically channels Duane. His solos are etched into my head forever. I'd like to see him with his wife and their band.

  • Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was Pakistani! What's up with 'Indian' influences. Google 'sahib teri bandi' by nusrat fateh ali khan.. that's the original from where he got inspired

  • I heard him live in Toronto when he was 21. He was a monster guitar player even then.

  • @rocketjunkie88 Playing fast can be cool, but being ABLE to play slower WELL is just as great and important.

  • Thank you Universe for Derek Trucks...

  • This guy kicks ass!!!

  • He is just awesome!

  • Im going to use that................wow..

  • derek rocks

  • very interesting - this kid is smart. and he is a very good slide player but open minded enought o incorporate a bit of Indian melodic work with his slide..not all southern boys are redneck jerks..we wear shoes now ..and he is right about the song selection and pace of a concert. and to those who think making a slide guitar speak is easy, try it. and if you are in standard tuning you better be really good.

  • @nootaramus lmfao so thats why I suck when I play slide... IVE BEEN TRYING TO PLAY IN STANDARD TUNING ALL THIS TIME!

  • @robzbobz lol your comment made me laugh :D

  • I'm buying a slide.

  • To all those hopping the lessons video's watching some unknown guy showing you the "style" of Derek Trucks... Stop watching those! No this is not a boycot, but if you truely wish to learn a thing or two, start using your ears and watch this video closely.

  • it just f....'n blows my mind how fast & yet accurate he plays!!

  • I can't stop staring at that beautiful goldtop Les Paul DC.

  • @w00p678 I hope for you you are capable of multitasking

  • so humble and amazing

  • cool dude

  • @bexserver He definitely sounds like Hendrix. Good call.

  • 10.00 is also amazing

  • he laughs just like oteil!!!!

  • DT is the best melodic slide player of this generation

  • Is it just me, or when he talks does he sound like Hendrix? Close your eyes, tell me what you think!

  • @bexserver lol no

  • @bexserver holy shit man!!! you're right!!! jajajajaja

  • @bexserver Nope, he sounds like either a white boy from Louisiana speaking naturally. Or, a white boy from somewhere else who thinks that he's an old black man from the Mississippi Delta. Jimi was much spacier that this dude.

  • @Maafa1619

You're putting it on the "white or black" , but let me tell ya', it ain't about the color that you have or where you from.. it's about daring to show your feelings, dare to make your self vulnerable so that the people listening to you enjoy their time, or feel whatever emotion comes from your playing. That's what we call the blues.

  • @MysteryHunterz You can't tell me a fucking thing because you don't know a thing about The Blues. You're a shameless culturally misappropriating thief, just like Trucks and the other cornball wiggers you so greatly admire. It's all soulless inauthentic mimicry.

  • @Maafa1619 Racism is awesome.

  • @Nickpatient I'm sure that YOU see it that way without an iota of irony.

  • @Maafa1619 No, I'm a Buddhist and I've never been able to comprehend racism. :)

  • @Maafa1619 That's a hell of an opinion to have. Lots of hate in that heart of yours. I'm not certain but I would imagine those blues musicians who you idolize wouldn't share the same outlook.

  • i got to play harp with derek when he was 10 years old in naples fla. he was badass at that tender young age!

  • derek trucks is a boss..a humble monster

  • not what i thought his voice would sound like

  • Anybody know which open tuning he's using?

  • @WillWorkFourMUSIC

EBEG#BE for the majority of his stuff

  • I've watched this video like 100 times and I just keep coming back to watch it

  • my1name2, Shut you mouth ass wipe before I cave your ugly face in gay boy. "The Bluesman" don't fuck with me or "you goin to the hospital loser". Derek laughs too much and talks like a hillbilly. But we likes him just the same.

  • pedrohgromero1, Here's the deal chump; I doubt if Derek knows the mechanics because he's a bit wet behind the ears while enjoying a great talent. When it comes to business he's a disabled quadraplegic, typical of most of these guys. Slide, unlike guitar, is totally about your ear. If you have a good one and a little patience you can be a great slide player, if not, don't waste your time. You need to stay with it until it "clicks", you'll know when it happens, like hearing your 1st rattlesnake.

  • that Gold top Double cutaway Les Paul keeps distracting me....its gorgeus!!!

  • hes sooo good! Such good taste.

  • Man, i've been played for 12 heard nos, and i'm alo blues, but only now i'm trying to learn slide, man i feel kinda lost, and what Derek does , gosh i had never seen anyone doing, i just hope i can dig some of his tunes and licks someday

  • @ebay9302 Oops, Sorry, Derek did mention Duane. He stated he's 60% Duane. Nice kid for giving credit and he is a fantastic credit to Duane. "The Bluesman" "Go Jump IN The Pond Bitch"

  • Thanks Derek for sharing!

  • This Dude is HEAVY! He's a throwback from the 60's. Damn if he ain't!

  • @ebay9302 better leave the crack alone, it is making you stupid.

  • @ebay9302 wrong. duane's voice is good

  • Cheers for the suggestions guys! Think I shall go ahead and acquire myself a copy of Roadsongs! :)

  • @ziggy5571 Fantastic Idea! that album is so damn good!

  • 8:35 literally sounds like a man singing!!!

  • Roadsongs is a really good live Derek trucks album to start with

  • What an amazing player, he makes his guitar sound so vocal like! I need to get some of his albums I reckon, does any one have any suggestions as to a good Derek Trucks album to start out with?? Been looking on amazon but they all seem to to be rated pretty highly (probaly quite rightly so!) so dont really know which one to get first!?

  • @ziggy5571 I agree with the above comment, Roadsongs is almost a live "best of", all of Truck's stuff is great though, so you can't go wrong.

  • Does anyone know the name of the mandolin player that Derek Mentions? I think his name was string evoss or schring evoss?

  • @ghleath shrinivas; check out shakti for example

  • @ghleath Think it might be "Srinivas". Search "Mandolin Srinivas"

  • Those melodys are like little storys..... That's what makes a melody great

  • Comment removed

  • a professor of slide guitar! My Respect goes to him

  • It's great to hear him talk about those Eastern influences, because I hear them in his music but I couldn't tell you where they came from or who specifically he was influenced by. Him talking about it is a big "aha" moment for me, putting together a few piece of a puzzle.

  • 8:35 is amazing

  • why didn't i listen to this guy 15 years ago. Amazing

  • Wow, never knew he was influenced by Ali and Nusrat. That makes sense. I almost feel like he gives too many of his secrets away in this. Awesome pickin' man!

  • Can someone tell me what a tonic note is? Is it the root note or the 5th?

  • @SIZZLEBIZZLE1982 It's the root.

    the 5th is the dominant.

  • Who's the mandolin player he mentioned? I can't quite catch his name

  • @EmFayg U. Srinivas I believe.

  • I got to see him and Susan and their band at the Gathering of the Vibes, his playing gave me chills in 100 degree weather

  • Can I borrow that left-handed Gibson hanging on the left for like... forever?

  • I think he's beginning to lose touch with the Eastern scales, and its showing in his more recent playing. He's still in my estimation the greatest ever behind Duane and Jimi, but I'd like to see him go back to more of a multi-style approach to playing. Maybe he's just trying to let Susan share the spotlight, I dono...

  • this guy is awesome

  • Great video. Cheers for uploading this.

  • Derek's got great personality, gifted guitar player. Great upload. The crossroads is a great jam.

  • And he should know. Shredders, take note. I made a pun.

  • You make sense. Yes, it is better to wait things out, to allow the distilling process to finsh its fermentation and so create the energy you've engineered into the piece! thanks for your help.

  • 6 people have no soul...

  • Nice fellow!

  • what tuning is he in?

  • @TheAlexkru Before he started playing with his wife in the Tadeschi-Trucks band he only played in open E. So this video is in open E although now hes playd in standard and in open D

  • 8:25 holy fucking shit

  • What an awesome and talented guy.

  • 11:34 This sounds so similar to SANTANA :) Very nice demonstration thanks.

  • @4age20vbt You mean, as in, it's a guitar he's playing? Sincerely, they could not be or sound more different.

  • l wonder how high his action is

  • God, I get shivers at 8:28 every time.

  • @jordanbuckelew It's pretty incredible, how it's just a quick lick for him :/

  • @jordanbuckelew Really? You got shivers from him saying "major thing"?

  • one super thin neck..nice guitar man..wonder the true year of it...

  • I was gonna try and learn slide, then I hear Derek and I think what's the point?

  • Ali Akbar Kahn!

  • I PLAY SLIDE WITH A RUBBER BOOT HEEL FIXED TO A BROOM HANDLE BY THREE EIGHT PENNY NAILS WITH A DAB OF J B WELD HARDENED IN THE SUN THREE DAYS WHILE ADDING BAR-B-QUE SAUCE AT REGULAR INTERVALS THEN ADDING A STRAP TO THE BROOM HANDLE SO I CAN ATTACH THE SLIDE TO MY FOOT, BECAUSE THE FEETS GIVE THE BEST TONE WHILE USING A SLIDE FIXED IN THE SAME MANNER!

PS - I HATE RETARDS WHO GO ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON-AND-ON!

  • @jehovahuponyou - you should have covered that broom with the J B Weld, and crammed it up your ass,

= this ' Retard' is a blues star, - who's going down in the books of history, - and your achievements are ? -

    i mean, -- besides being a whiny-assed Cry-Baby ??

  • @bluelibra65 - NOTICE CHILDREN, HOW THIS POSTER BEGAN WITH ALLUDING TO MY ASS, A VEILED PASS AT ME BY A YOU-TUBE SODOMITE, NO DOUBT!

MY ACHIEVEMENTS ARE INNUMERABLE, OH, JEALOUS ONE - AND MIGHT I ADD THAT I HAVE TEN TIMES AS MANY MUSIC AWARDS AS YOU AND TWENTY TIMES THE NUMBER OF GOLD RECORDS THAT YOU HAVE MADE - LOGIC (IF YOU HAVE ANY) SHOULD LEAD YOU TO SOME KIND OF CONCLUSION HERE!

AND, 'YES!' - I HAVE A CRY BABY PEDAL - I USE IT ON A FEW SONGS - SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOU CAN BUY ONE TOO!

  • @jehovahuponyou -- the only child here, - is you. - no one cares to hear your negativity - Grow Up.

  • @bluelibra65 - YOU SAID: "the only child here, - is you." - AND YOU MADE A PASS AT ME - SHAME ON YOU, YOU ARE A FAR SICKER FUCK THAN I THOUGHT!

NEGATIVATY - YOU MISS THE POINT OLE SCREWTAPE!

  • @jehovahuponyou haha no shit, you are right my friend...lol...yea one can play with just about anything as long as its metal or glass..i started with glass..then one day had a stainless steal handed to me,never looked back..its more cutting to me..but ahh a broom and 16 penny nails with a boot heal in my teeth, never tried that one..hmmmm..haha

  • @ltuomela - SEE, THEY STILL MAKE FOLKS WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR - THANKS, MELA!

I NEVER PLAYED SLIDE, BUT I DO BELIEVE STAINLESS STEEL WOULD HAVE A MORE BITING TONE.

WONDER WHAT OLE GEORGE THOROUGHLYBADTOTHEBONE USES?

  • @JacKass00001 - DAMN STALKERS!

HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET MY PHONE NUMBER?

I SHALL REPORT YOU TO THE NAVY BABY SEALS!

    ROFL!

  • ive heard of guitarist getting licks from piano players and harmonica players even horn players but taking indian music and incorporating it into your blues slide guitar is just unreal, proof that music will never stop evolving

  • Great philosophy. Great player.

  • Just got back from the show in NC!!!! Fucking incredible....... enough said.

  • so R U using the open E tuning on all those or just the blues riffs...? I love that SG bass pickup sound....thanks,.....

  • @MegamanXfan21xx open A man is where its at...

  • Amazing how effortless it is to him. Playing those licks, I would be far too tensed up, hoping to keep in tune.

  • My boy Derek representin Jville! Duvallllllll!

  • I hear you dude, there's no point in music without emotion

  • Way tuning is he in

  • @1221Guitar Open E. == E B E G# B e

  • hey cool, derek trucks has a shawn lane connection via jeff sipe

  • Derek is a real musician. Not a self indulgent show-off. It's great to hear him express the understanding of MOVING people vs making them say "wow he's good."

  • @nperaino so true man!!! Fuck Synyesster Gates

  • hey dereck check out Mick Karn, he dont use fretts

  • lefty in the back round!!

  • i ignored the advert :)

  • 5 people don't know what real music sounds like

  • Thank God for players like this who understand the true meaning........

  • Ali Akhbar Khan is Ravi's Brother in law,his sister was ravi's wife his father ravi's teacher

Both can be seen on the Concert for Bangladesh dvd

  • he gave us the finger

  • @1212surface Ali Akhbar Khan - he played with Ravi Shankar

  • fukn click this :05

  • the only bit of music theory i know if what i learned when i was in 5th to 8th grade when i played the saxophone in the school band... for guitar i've learned everything by ear... i don't think there's a right or wrong different things work for different people... i don't know chords or scales but if you play some blues and i listen to your playing i can jam to ya :) i think it's more fun to just FEEL your playing not study it

  • @sblopez08 True. People tend to forget what is most important: Moving people, not showing off. And when you are creative enough, you can move people without having learned any theory at all!

  • @ASFM11 exacto

  • @ASFM11 there is nothing wrong about theory dude. there is no musician which dosent know at least a little of theory. without theory u dont know what ur doing, so how do u want to move people if u dont know how to do it? do you just hope to hit the right note when u want to create a sad mood for example? i agree with your argument that the essential is often forgotten, but theorie is not wrong.. peace

  • @Temejin1 Well, I might reconsider claiming that theory is useless. Knowing what you're playing only makes you a better player. But what my main point is, is that these kids are focusing TOO MUCH on the technical side. They think BB Kink is shit, just because he can't play as fast as Yngwie!

  • @ASFM11 i agree. it's interesting to see how the guitar is changing with time. as u say. people tend to be more technical. but i think this also is a result of major improvments in technologie. all this effects and stuff....

maybe u get easily distractet by all this, so u eventually blend out the feeling sometimes....

well we will see...music never stays the same..peace

  • @ASFM11 thats true only to a point...you have to learn some amount of theory like how scales and modes work together. But yeah i know albert king and SRV gave up on theory

  • @ASFM11 And i gonna do that ;)

  • @ASFM11 ummm no.. you definitely still need theory

  • @davidnhc7 You don't NEED it. Stevie Ray didn't know anything and look at him.

  • @dtan117 Actually, Stevie Ray knew ENOUGH theory. He may have not known he was playing Dorian or Mixolydian licks on occasion, but you still have to know the basics. Your good ol' blues i-iv-v progressions, for instance, still make you ask the key, if there should be a swing or not, etc.

Did he understand exactly everything he was doing? No. But did he know ENOUGH? Yes.

  • @ASFM11 when you become a master of your instrument.. you realize that you know your theory i never took a lesson yet when i started playing with players that actually knew what they were doing i realized that over the years you learn the terms for the things you do.. so in short yeah you learned all you theory as you get better.. once you learn the terms you can play anything and with anyone...

  • Ali Akhbar Khan & Musrat Fateh Ali Khan = great musicians who know the theory of their music very well. From what I can tell, Trucks is no theory-phobe. He knows his theory and is comfortable talking about it. The key to music isn't JUST listening. It's knowing your theory, scales, structures, etc well enough so that you can CONCENTRATE ON LISTENING. That doesn't mean ignoring theory, that means mastering theory.

  • @danakerman and btw, about your music theory.... it is important to understand scales, chord structures, etc. but above all you must be able to recognize aesthetic sounds within their keys and at each interval the song moves with. that's something that comes second nature to anyone who has talent and decent pitch. by spending too much time on theory a musician loses sight of his main objective which is to listen to and create music.

  • @calebthomas28 You didn't say anything different from what I said. And, no, you don't "lose sight" of listening to and creating music by learning to read music and learning theory. And theory doesn't come second nature to anyone. You've got it the wrong way around. A sensitive, talented musician NEVER loses their ability to listen well and create, but if he/she is interested in how it's constructed, then it helps their understanding to learn some theory.

  • @calebthomas28 now that sir is something i can agree with. i'm just saying, it's best to learn by ear first and pick along. theory should come later.

  • Srinivas in the mandolin player

  • Who is the mandolin player he is talking about? Some guy named stringe evoss or something like that

  • how do you think they pay for all that storage...you backwardass country fucks...it's 15 seconds of your life to enjoy something as incredible as this human being...why don't you bash your head in with a mallet...maybe you'll forget how fucking stupid you sound!!!

  • Had the pleasure of meeting Derek in State College, PA a night before the Allman Bros/ Dead show. Super nice and down to earth guy. Thanks for chatting Derek!

  • For anybody who was wondering, he said in an interview he only ever uses open e tuning EBEG#BE.

  • WHAT TUNING IS THAT!???????????

  • @kevinleft EBEG#BE, most likely, or DADF#AD

  • now ads have a "skip" button. BEST BELIEVE IM SKIPPING THAT BULLSHIT!!

  • haha I like how you have to watch a shit advert for Britney speirs of ALL people.

  • sahib teri bandi <3

  • This young man will go down in history as one of the great maestros of the guitar - in fact, I think he's there already. He's a total original, standing tall on the shoulders of giants. Every budding blues guitarist goes through the BB King / Jimi Hendrix / Eric Clapton / Stevie Ray Vaughn school of learning - Trucks is now firmly on that list! (don't shoot me on that list - it's not definitive, but it is the core of every young person's blues guitar playing journey :) )

  • ahhh darn it....i spilled my frosty

  • wtf mormon ads now what the hell is with mormons damn

  • maybe he's one of those ignorant folks who thinks stuff just comes up from the internet without anyone making any money. Like everything must be free. These people need to make some money somehow, lameass...

  • @zneroLmiT Maybe you're one of those ignorant folks that doesn't know this video comes from a British guitar magazine called Guitarist . This came on the included DVD/CD that they produce containing interviews, reviews, lessons, demos etc . My point being that the magazines are bought and paid for by the public long before they uploaded onto YouTube so there is NO need whatsoever to plonk loads of adverts into the video ! They have already made their money through the mags .It is a great mag btw.

  • @Glen694u ad revenue is for Youtube, not the mag. Do you have any idea the amount of computing power to maintain Youtube? Joost was a good video site with a fantastic guitar channel, tons of video lessons. They couldn't monetize and went under. Youtube was not profitable in the pre-ad years. Why do you think anybody programs and builds Youtube if not to monetize it?

  • @croussant I don't now think that it's YouTube that is putting in the these ads . If you check out Musicradar all of their videos are embedded with ads so that tells me it IS the owners of the magazine that are earning from the ads themselves . Google who own Youtube have ads everywhere now including on the Musicradar site I guess that helps with the costs of running that one . Google plaster adds all over YouTube site to earn the money to maintain it - I have no problem with that .

  • A really down to earth explaination of where Derek is coming from, excellent. I especially like the references to the "King Notes", and microtones. Then his statement about the 'Desert and the Delta'. Pretty profound in my opinion.

  • i want every single one of those gibsons in the backround

  • Is this the same guitar that has been around for the last 50 years?....because he makes this sound totally different! haha
