HELP I've acquired a 55g turtle tank, and I now want to make it planted, but it is currently graveled do I have to take out a the gravel to put down substrate or do I have another option??
@kiccopg thanks! i only recently switched from seachem excel to pressurised co2 myself, this being the first tank ive ran in a more high tech manner, but if you check the earlier vids of my juwel tank before the flourite sand recape it was thriving with only excel and pea gravel, im always telling people how amazin excel is if you cant do pressurised - since i changed high tech ive been trying more difficult plants but as long as the plants arent too hard to care for excel will do wonders
@kiccopg maybe try vallis, wisteria, watersprite, dwarf sag, ludwigia , rotala, hygrophila polysperma is a great fast growing plant as well but in some parts of the world its illegal to sell as its classed as invasive, crypts also work well under low light, i love crypt wendtii red and bullosa which both seem to do well without co2 and liquid ferts.
one word of warning when dosing excel with new plants is to start very weak and slowly build up the amount as some plants are shocked by it and melt
@amalone539 id maybe start with liquid carbon instead of co2 to begin with, before i swapped over to pressurised co2 system i had brilliant results just using the liquid carbon. if you do decide to go the co2 route id advise u avoid all diy/yeast co2 as it is too difficult to get a good stable co2 level which can give you algae problems. if you check on ebay ive found full setups for under £50. not many cheap black substrates for planted aquariums, the flourite sand i use is £25 for a 7kg bag
@Electromusicaus thanks, hopefully when the new plants grow out i should get some great shots of the whole tank, ive just had a huge trim ready to let the tank grow out till after christmas
I have got the rio 400 and was thinking of going planted I have got fake plants at the moment as had real ones in the past but had bad snail infestation I have got normal community fish and 8 jade eyes gona just have all dwarf cichlids soon tho what co2 would I need and what black substrate is good but cheap as I will need alot !
@77MAD77MAD77 im toying with the idea of pulling the BT from the front as im sick of it getting uprooted and floating around the tank till it snags up on another plant, im gonna see how the Brazilian micro sword does, possibly might take over as carpet plant if it does ok.
@awhitwarrior77 i think its just down to getting the right level of co2/light/nutrients, you should see it pearl after ive just done a water change, looks like the tank is filled with carbonated water
@TheAquariumKid thanks, ive recently been getting back into photography so im really enjoying having something to take vidz/pics of. sometime soon gonna get my friends top end canon round with some sexy lenses and get some even better HD footage
amazing! In my books your one of the best fish keepers out there, no algae at all, healthy plants and beautiful fish...this has to be the best tank I've seen.
@TheRossiboy really appreciate that ross, although i think i still have a long way to go. I never thought id get so into growing plants in fish tanks, its kinda taken over my life lol.
I waited to post the helferi till monday as i didnt want it sitting in the freezing warehouse over the weekend, its all bagged up ready to send over tomorrow.
Every day i love this hobby more, finally starting to get rewards after months of battling to get the damn thing in some kinda balance, whod of thought pressurised co2 would be such a double edged sword.
Been looking into those terrariums after speaking the other night, i feel one finding a home in my living room very soon.
@BeerBellyDK Thanks so much man! some of the new plants in the vid are kinda scrawny still but just wanted to show some of the new additions, found some pogo erectus lookin sorry for itself in a pot, only 3 crappy stems so i really hope it pulls back, the stellatus is doing amazing.
The new dry ferts ive been mixing up and dosing are still a bit on the weak side but im slowly finding the right level for the tank, seem to be getting a lot less surface algae than with the ready made EI ferts.
@studentofselassie thanks, hopefully some time next week gonna get my friends camera over and get some even better footage using his macro lenses, been waiting for him to get a class 10 SD card so we can take 60fps 1080p, should look sooooo frikkin sweeet.
