@toynoise They canceled this version of the camera... It's now a Scarlet-X. The 3k camera no longer exists. The data on their website is correct, this video is wrong. It was a change made back in March or April. They had problems with focusing and the fixed lens.
What a real shame the camera Ted shows here is not to be released. Great features and a great price, after people waited years for it's appearance.
Sure the current Scarlet is a good deal, better than Canon I think. But still way expensive at $14k for a package (without lens) compared to what Ted is showing in this video.
RED LOST ! RED LOST! CANON ANNOUNCED 4K FULL FRAME VIDEO RECORDING DSLR! FORGET THE SCARLET!TED JUST GOT POWNED BY CANON! THUMBS UP SO PEOPLE CAN READ! GO TO CANON GLOBAL AND READ THE ANNOUNCEMENT YOURSELF!
Can't wait. 2/3" sensor is no problem to me. A great deal of television, docs, docu-dramas, events, and some indies are shot on 2/3." I'm more appreciative of HDRx, 3k, RAW, overcranking up to 150fps.
@artal85 They allready have. Sony has the PMW-F3 and F-65 , Panasonic just introduced a compact 4k camcorder and canon.......well they are working on something!
@SanJohnProductions Originally there was a plan for a non-fixed lens SCARLET that would accept the mini RED mount. There is even photos from an old NAB.However a few months ago RED dropped the idea for this version and moved the whole concept to an EPIC-S which will be more like an entry evel EPIC , or for most, an interchengable lens scarlet. However its price will exceed 12,000$
I just hope that the scarlet will be really a bomb and will blow us all away by it quality, I really hope that the scarlet don't disappoint me for all the money I will put in it.
The aperture is F2.4 throughout the zoom range. A true pro will create amazing cinematic images after the scarlet is released. 28 Days Later was shot on a 480i prosumer camcorder, Open water was as well and Monsters was too. Oh and Paranormal Activity. None of these cameras used on these very profitable films holds a candle to the Scarlet. If you're creative you'll get a decent DOF when you need it. The footage will look great. If you need shallower depth get an Epic-S.
Also, a single 2/3" will have hardly the dynamic range and exposure zones of what even a 5D can pull with its equivalent 3" sensor (or VistaVision 70mm sensitive area equivalent). I mean, even the 7D gets at least 2 stops of latitude in the shadows. Even in HDR mode, 2/3" sensor will not get you the kind of luminance range in the shadows and darks that a full frame sensor will pull - not going to happen.
@filmmanvick16 This is a professional motion picture camera. It's going to have better latitude than a 5D or 7D. There is no way Red would tout their high dynamic range and quality over DSLRs if it were going to fail against a7D or 5D. C'mon now. lol. Technology is improving year after year as are sensors. The 5D is using an outdated sensor. I will go on record and will happily eat crow if I'm wrong, but the Scarlet will easily top the 5D's useable video dynamic range with a cleaner image.
Just look at the construction of the Scarlet's lens, it looks nothing like a pro 35mm photography or cinema lens. It looks like a videocamera lens. Something that looks almost impossible for a focus puller to operate manually (especially compared to my Zeiss primes that have great low turn ratios specifically designed for manually focusing).
Also, what is the maximum aperture on this thing? I've heard it is an f/2.4 - which on a 2/3" sensor will hardly pull great shallow depth of field - so much light is being blocked with a sensor that small - even if the aperture is opened to that full focal length.
The Scarlet looks like a prosumer video camera/high end broadcast camera at best. Who cares how high the resolution is. You are stuck with a fixed, zoom video lens. No pro cinematographer would ever use a fixed lens camera. The ability to use high quality primes is absolutely essential in digital cinematography because zooming in a lens adjusts the exposure speed (okay for documentaries, not acceptable for film production).
@filmmanvick16 The scarlet has a constant aperture throughout the zoom range. So when you zoom in it's not going to darken the picture the way say my Canon 18-55mm F3.5-F5.6 lens would. Zooming is not going to adjust the exposure unless it is not using a constant aperture. This lens would work fine and any pro cinematographer should have no problems working around it. It has a decent zoom range, it's fairly fast and has a constant aperture throughout the zoom range.
You are very biased. We are talking about 3k RAW with much higher color quality and grading ability. You will have far more grading range & quality with the scarlet than any DSLR....period. It's not even close. Green screening will be much easier and cleaner than with any DSLR. Scarlet also has 120FPS for amazingly smooth slow motion (seen footage already of the scarlet shooting 120fps in super slow mo and it was amazing). 150FPS Burst. It's been said the Scarlet is clean at very high ISOs.
What is the aperture on the Scarlet lens? It better be in the 1.2-1.4 range with a 2/3" (.75") sensor if you want DOP. The DOP of a lens at 5.6 on the 5D sensor is equivalent to a 1.4/2.0 spilt on 35mm film. You want to be at least at a 2.8 with the 7D and that's a 1.8" sensor. And, most independent features rent Zeiss Ultra Primes or Cook S4 Primes to shoot their film. No pro would rely on a single, fixed Zoom lens to shoot anything substantial with a sensor that small. I certainly wouldn't.
@jasedotcom Then get an Epic which costs 54,000+ more dollars than a scarlet.I think what this camera does is more than amazing for its price. I have seen amazing DOF shots at an appeture of 2.8.The Scarlet will be at around 2.4.The lens is about half the size of a prime and I think it's pretty good although I prefer interchangable lenses...That does not mean the Scarlet is not reliable.
You can't forget about sensor size. An f/2.8 on the Canon 5D sensor is equivalent to about an f/.7 in S35mm format. On the 7D it is about a 2.8 on S35mm. On a 2/3" sensor it will be completely deep focused. No fixed lens camera can be a pro digital cinema camera. End of story. No good DP would ever shoot fixed lens.
What a pompous fuck. DSLRS are only good to shoot web videos? If that is the case, then why did Anthony Dod Mantle (DP, Slumdog Millionaire) shoot part of "127 Hours" on the 5D and 1D? Why did Matthew Libatique shoot all of "Black Swan's" night scenes on the 7D? Why did Gale Tattersall shoot the entire 7th season of House entirely on the 5D?
i think the time is not on Scarlet's side, for almost the same price,Sony got FS100 with the super 35mm sensor, nothing can beat that, single 2/3" sensor? no way! 5D Mark III is coming and don't forget people do filming with the Mark II,panasonic AC130&160 is on the way with the new developed three 1/3" sensor,21X wide angle zoom lens! the total sensor size of the 130&160 is still bigger than Scarlet! and the price of 130? i don't even want to tell you about that.3K?who care? Scarlet, game over!
You are unable to use lenses with different focal lengths which makes it hard to capture depth of field (an essential for feature filmmaking). Also, you can't attach primes or zooms which are very useful in different shooting situations. Also, the sensor is pretty small (about broadcast standard) but not good for commercials or movies. The small sensor makes it difficult for get depth of field and will do poorly in low light conditions as the amount of light entering the image is reduced.
I doubt they'll sell many fixed lens scarlets...especially with DSLR competition right now. I could see an interest in an interchangeable lens system, but whose going to spend 6-12k on a camera? No one. You're either going to shoot on a DSLR or a RED. Just like choosing between S16 and S35. There's no room in between. I think this camera will hit an empty market.
Firstly, it has 2/3 sensor and fixed lens, it's quite limited option compare to HDSLR like 5D/7D where you can variety of lenses. Scarlet is cool nonetheless, but the question is that would it be justified to spend 6k to buy it when Mark III will come out for half the price?
i'm sure the quality and features are amazing, but it's still a bit on the bulky side of things? personally i think i'd rather use a dslr like the 5dmk2, which would be easier to travel with.
Does it have any inbuilt stabilization for motion picture?
why should i choose scarlet over GH2? the sensor of GH2 is 4/3 size which is much bigger than scarlet's 2/3" sensor, you can't change lens from the fixed lens scarlet but with GH2 you could use many different lens,GH2 is not totally perfect for filming but is really good enough for filming than any DSLR including 5D Mark II,scarlet is about 6000 USD with the 3X fixed lens,GH2 is 1500USD with the 14-140 HD zoom lens, with GH2 i can use it as a camera or filming,so why would i choose scarlet?
@WinterXL i know the scarlet is much much better for filming and i want one so bad but the price is too much for me(also, their accessories is very expensive) unless i could use it to make money immediately or else this is not practical for me and i better get a GH2 instead, that's more like it for my own situation,i know scarlet is cool as hell but i live in the reality.you can't made a good movie if all you got is a scarlet.
@casablancamicasa Well I dont know. I like to take that baby for a spin. If the entire package cost 6-12K that isn't bad (pro-wise). I mean getting a DSLR may be cheaper but the buck doesnt stop with just the getting a camera body & a single lens. Your collection of lenses will cost way more. Dont know how good the lense will be on this Scarlet. But c'mon you're shooting video up to 3K! not to mention no more rolling shutter and camera moire.
@skytoast1 keep in mind you can also rent items. If you get the body as someone who does indy films you can rent out the rest. Modulator design means you can break it down to the barest parts if your a school or a rent house. I would prolly buy one of these as a indy film marker and hang with it for 6 years without thought. The camera is so far ahead of the curve. In less than 10 years kids will take the bits and pieces of this camera stick those suckers together to make 3d films on the cheap.
i would have definitely bought this camera one or two years ago, i have since purchased a canon 5dmark2 and 7d. its a pretty shitty strategy to delay a camera for years,. Its also a bad idea to have the strategy guy talking specs which he doesn't fully understand/ know about. I personally don't want to hear anything else about this camera until the day when one of my friends shows up to my house and says "hey look what i just bought" !! If that day ever comes i might show some interest again.
The Problem is everyone is gonna buy this and think it's just some shit camera and they're gonna shoot shitty movies shitty pornos and the camera is gonna be a joke............. i still want one tho.......
I still think this is a very practical camera for getting an awesome picture. But unless they release it fairly soon (like, by the end of 2011) the world may pass them by...or they'll go under another total overhaul of the camera.
I wouldn't consider the Sony F3 a high end prosumer camera like he did. The F3 is a beast, with a much larger chip than Scarlet. And it's out.
@HybridCamRevolution ...people have been saying "zomg Scarlet will own everything" for like 3 years now (pushing 4?), so we'll all be happy when they finally decide to go from vaporware to reality
@WinterXL I'm not talking about prototypes. I've held and operated the real thing, both the Scarlet and the Epic. Just because you can't buy a Scarlet right this second doesn't make it vaporware. Production is held up due to parts suppliers in Japan being wiped out recently...
@ReidarFolkedal see i didnt know that, i can only tell you what others have told me so everything i could be saying, could be complete lies passed down from one ignoramus like the bible.
well yeah show me a video of epic and scarlet but still lighting latitudes and fake medioker colours would still be a factor surely?

HybridCamRevolution 1 year ago
@HybridCamRevolution ...people have been saying "zomg Scarlet will own everything" for like 3 years now (pushing 4?), so we'll all be happy when they finally decide to go from vaporware to reality
WinterXL 1 year ago
@WinterXL Funny, I've never actually held vaporware in my hand. Unlike the Scarlet.
temsi 10 months ago
@temsi people have held prototypes in their hands for like 5 years, it's vaporware
WinterXL 10 months ago
@WinterXL I'm not talking about prototypes. I've held and operated the real thing, both the Scarlet and the Epic. Just because you can't buy a Scarlet right this second doesn't make it vaporware. Production is held up due to parts suppliers in Japan being wiped out recently...

"YouTube" film vs red camera and see why this will never shoot a good motion picture
jbred00 1 year ago
@jbred00 Those "RED vs film" videos aren't really relevant anymore. They were shot on RED One with the old M sensor. A LOT has changed since then.
