  • This dude can talk! I went to his show and he talked for almost 5 straight hours, he's cool I love his films, but dude can talk.

  • He doesn't get anywhere near enough due credit for Red State!

  • Kevin Smith is cool and what not...

  • how many big names do you know that write, produce, direct and edit their own movies? Kevin is honestly one of the only TRUE filmakers

  • Slacker is a fucking amazing film! I'm pretty stoked to hear it impacted him so much!

  • Lol I had some parallel stuff happen in my childhood : ) that's just awesome.

  • Constant stream of verbal nothingness.

  • I love Clerks! That movie means so much to me thankyou Mr Smith (^_^)

  • kevin smith is the brightest of all adults

  • Mmm, cinnamon general

  • awesome writer/director

  • What qualifies for verbal abuse, then? Have you read your original comment? It's far more abusive than what I apparently stung you with.

And as to your whining about allowing other people to have an opinion, that works both ways. I expressed my opinion about the idiocy you scribbled. So suck it, chubs.

  • movies and shit

  • Does anybody know what a "DP" is? He talks about it around 10:30-10:45

  • @myvydz Director of Photography

  • @Stranahan Ahh I should have known. Thanks man.

  • @myvydz the guy who controle what you see on screen....camera moves, lighting ect

  • @myvydz Double Penetration

  • @myvydz double penetration

  • For somebody called "Silent Bob", this motherfucker talks more about himself than anybody else on the entire internet, this guy fucking loves talking.

  • @denniscization Kevin isn't Silent Bob you gelatinous blob. And it's an interview. What else is he supposed to do? Shadow puppets?

  • @mjt1517 I did not give you or anyone any verbal abuse, what is it about these people who do not like people having an opinion? Are you North Korean or something? Grow up, I do not come on here to fight and troll people, and I am entitled to my own opinion about the subject matter, which ain't you.

  • Did they even make that many movies?

  • These videos are awesome, keep up the good work bro..

  • I actually loved Jersey Girl, with all it's flaws.

  • can you use a real police department in your film and have actors act as real police for that police department or would you need a permit first? same for a public high school, can you use a real public high school and display their logo and have actors act as students or would you need a permit?

  • @roeroe305 My assumption being if the school board OKs it you can shoot it in a school with their logo, with cops however if you're using their real uniforms and equipment you'd clearly need something for it like a permit or something of the sort, not exactly sure I'm just a 17 year old aspiring film maker.

  • @roeroe305 Depends. I plan on using my school but not showing the name and stuff

  • HIs ability to answer a question with a dozen minutes straight of talk without pause is amazing.

  • Love this interview man, I visit it often. His DVD collection is epic, too bad the bulk are sealed and now have to be replaced by blu-rays.

  • Great advice for a novice writer such as myself.

  • anyone else notice the 'water pipe' in the back gotta love ya Kevin!!!!!!!!!

  • I think your acctualy more for theather comedies...

  • Wow. Never really liked Kevin Smith. He's fucking modest and humble and that counts a lot. Nice video.

  • @cop70s Double penetration

  • am i the only one who wondered what happend to Vinnie?

  • @PIVOTMAN101 on a planet full of people, you think you may have thought something nobody else has thats arrogant man!

Haha, don't worry it's a fake troll comment, a troll lol if you will.

    I wondered about Vinnie.

  • @PIVOTMAN101

No, you're not. And that is a disheartening thing to know that both he and Kevin had the same aspirations, but only one made it. Like how I see all of these ASPIRING FILMMAKERS on YouTube and everywhere else, and it makes me wonder if I'll make it or not.

  • @teratophobia yeah dude i know exactly what you mean!

  • i like how he said that if it looks like shit its more important that the audience can connect with the characters, BUT it doesnt hurt not to make it look like shit

  • I love Kevin Smith, I love his movies, but talking to him would be my nightmare situation (not that it would ever happen). But there is just no pause, no break, he goes on and on and on. Yes it's fascinating, and of course this isn't a conversation we're watching, but phew! Wish he would just finish a thought and be done.

  • Of course its a bong you fools, stop getting wet because Kevin Smith might actually be doing something he always writes about. You flannels.

  • i know it's a stupid word, but this guy is so fucking REAL, love him, and love his storytelling

  • @vladamirrrr It is a stupid word. But oftentimes, calling someone real sometimes is best way to describe them. I suppose the word has too much context to it these days. Another way to put it might be something like, "Heart on his sleeve" or some such nonsense. But nothing else seems to be as appropriate. You could even say that it doesn't seem like Kevin is putting on any sort of act. He pulls his punches on those he doesn't like in Hollywood and then he goes all out on himself. "Real" indeed.

  • I thought Clerks was better than Slackers.

  • @TheoHuxtable07 Are they comparable? I feel like those two movies are apples and oranges.

  • @creepyoldman2 Maybe I meant as far as what has influenced me more. I thought Kevin should have given himself more credit for what I thought was a pretty good film.

  • @TheoHuxtable07 Alright that makes more sense. I agree with you, Kevin is often self-deprecating.

  • I have just made a own movie (where i got two pink balls) and i had to somthing creativ with it. Im trying to get as many likes as possible in till 1 FEB! it took me like 4 houers to do. If you have the time ples check it out, If you like it give it a thumbs up. Search on "Pink reality veraANDjohn" Enjoy ;o)

(is it possible to get over 200 like befor 1 feb? specialy when this is my first movie ever made)!!!! "its hosted by veraANDjohn, thatswy its not on my youtube!! :o)

  • When you feel chat with bbw come on anytime naneedj.info

  • looks like a bong in the background x)

  • man, i could never talk that long uninterrupted

  • aha is that a bong on the shelf behind him? :P

  • he got offered GoodWill Hunting? jesus

  • @Colt2571 Affleck and Smith are really good friends, and Affleck wrote Goodwill hunting.

  • Honestly, I liked Dogma, Clerks and Chasing Amy much better than Zack and Miri make a porno....They were much more honest pieces of film making and they did have a look to them...despite whatever people may have told Kevin about how his films need to look better...They had a heart to the storytelling...honest and unpretentious....way to go, Kevin!!!

  • "The retarded stepchild of cinema who everyone's really proud when he learns to tie his shoes"

  • man that part on how it dont have to look amazing to be good, kinda helped me out. im trying to get started with film making, and have been worrying about making the movie look really good, but haven't really given much thought on what going to be going on. this guy is one of my film idols

  • or its a vase

  • if that is his house, loving the fact that hes got a bong just jammin on the shelf behind him

  • Does slacker count as a film?

    Ha Ha!

  • Even though Smith's films aren't my particular taste, I can respect the hell outa him for knowing the in's and out's of the movie biz. He's a smart dude who knows what he's doing.

  • Too bad Harley Smith had the mistfortune of inheriting Kevin's fat genes as well, yeeeesh. Too fat to fly on an airplane, he needs to slow down on the cheeseburgers before he ends up like Brando lol!

  • What a great speech by Kevin. It's true, Tarantino was watching films like Deliverance and Death Wish before the age of eleven. I mean, he knew more about film at sixteen than most student filmmakers. Kevin is right, he did have to work at it and it was tough for him to make his first film. If Clerks hadn't become a hit, he would've spent the next ten years of his life paying off a massive credit card debt!

  • It all starts with great writing

  • @Stranahan You need to lose some weight, because you are a good looking man. Fat is covering your good looking!!! Wink!

  • reminds me a little of jack black.

  • do I have to go to college to be a film maker?

  • @StageNameSadie not nessaseraly but i would recomend film school

  • @StageNameSadie film school or independent filmaking which is if want to make something your own, and not work under someone else.

  • @StageNameSadie uhm no not really. depends on how committed you are and how good of a storyteller you are....literally. theres UCLA, USC, NYU the list goes on and on. I go to SVA an underrated film school. most of the graduates DO go to make big name films unlike NYU although its good they just let there graduates become unemployed losers. With respect to NYU but they should really take better care of their graduates, that's all.

  • he's a good story teller.

    5*****

  • @00MORDRED Yes he is. He doesnt need to be a good film maker as long as the story keeps you. Fuck how it looks his stories are so good.

  • @AmericanPirateFilms right on,

    5*****

  • Was this filmed at his house? 'Cause that is one hell of a DVD collection

  • @LordNotis That's his house, yeah...and the collection stretches to take up most of the room.

  • @LordNotis - Yeah; I like the ladder behind him to reach the DVDs near the ceiling!

  • "I am not a very bright adult", to say that sentence ans pretty much admit thta is a very bright move xD

  • It came from being fat. xD

  • "i'm kinda the retarded stepchild of cinema"

  • direct and to the point. ty kv

  • cop out.

  • Slacker was a pleasant surprise. I'll have to rewatch it

  • Zack and Miri was an awesome movie, "the retarded kid in cinema lol"

  • kevin smith your awesome and it doesn't matter what they fill your head up with.

  • WARLOCK!

  • Twilight? That counts? lol that's what I say when I write.

  • damn he talks so much

  • He needs to make more movies

  • Jon Stewart is great but I dont think he would have been quite right. Drew Barrymore and David Schwimmer however? The sheer thought makes my skin crawl at how awful that would have been.

  • Kevin Smith is the man!

  • His speech is so smooth and eloquent, and it shows even more in the movies he writes.

  • Smith is right. I have a preference for artistic films--not those pseudo-artistic ones that come out of the major studios with generic looking photography--but films based on ideas, or on dialogue, are hard to make well, and Smith definitely excels in this regard.

  • I Kevin Smith, his philosophies helped me realize what I wanted to be.

  • Kevin Smith is so damn humble. xD

  • can't wait for Red State guys

  • Sir I need advice. I want to make a video series on youtube and when I am viewing on the computer, I want to have the rec• symbol and the date and time running on screen. is this easy?

  • Awesome!

  • I like Kevin... Movies like avatar show how cinema has digressed and how people nowadays are interested in sitting there and not thinking at all and being entertained by flashing lights and 3-d, which ive nothing against new technology but Avatar being nominated for best picture? No, its the story pocahontas with new characters and setting. Movies like the hurt locker which grossed ~20mil (avatar in the billions) , ones that have story and believable flawed characters are good

  • Avatar show cinematic moviegoers are finally giving up on crap like Transformers 2, and instead are craving experiences like the original "star wars". Who cares if the story's been done before, the same could be said for most classics. Pseudo-intellectual movie snobs are the worst kinds of people on the planet, acting like they're better than society because they can watch 2001 without fast forwarding.

  • @AreaJerm = prick

  • @jimfox123sse = pseudo-intellectual asshole

  • @AreaJerm kevin smith= heart

  • Anyone looking to learn more about the film making process? I have some interesting film making ebooks that I can send to people who are really interested. Just send me your email address and I can send the film making ebooks to you ASAP.

  • the lighting set up in this interview is a bit sucky lol. The reflection in his glasses was annoying. Great interview though

  • because of him i've already writing a script but first im going to go to film school so that I can improve it and try to get it done.

  • Fuck James Camron and his Avatar bullshit. This guy should've made that superman movie however he wanted.

  • Fuck you and your pseudo-intellectual bullshit.

"Avatar is so corporate. Go Kevin Smith and Independent filmmaking! I am so counter culture"

Faggots like you are the reason the film industry is dying.

  • I don't get why he's saying he's getting the hanging of it now, when his new stuff is terrible in comparison to his classics...I would've hated chasing amy with that cast...

  • hes neurotic leo with a leo moon :0 very smart but he has huge confidence probs. nonetheless i like him.

  • + he can be fat and still be spotlight, defiantly a Leo thing.

  • shut the fuck up, your observations are not that insightful. he's confident but he's also hard on himself. he disses himself before someone else gets the chance. unlike most people who think they are perfect. not to mention he has the right to be confident. he's successful. who the fuck are you some scum bag sitting around talking about some great movie your going to make some day. i'm glad kevin was pro-active and brought his movies to life. unlike you fags. judge everything, yet do nothing.

  • i am just observing true. but you are not a godly mediator to tell me how to think also so shut the fuck up. i do agree that even this guy as great as he is with his human flaws has become a great success and brought his ideas to fruition, unlike most lazy assholes who probably end up being film critics. i have great respect for the movie making business and one day i hope one of my screenplays will make it to the screen. heres to trying ;)

  • @PanayotiProductions i'm no godly mediator you can think whatever you want. but if you post comments that are inaccurate then prepare to have someone say other wise. You said he was over confident . i say he keeps an even keel going. you claim to like this man and then you proceed to diss on him and then back pedal and say Oh but i still like him. get a spine.

  • @wtldbitch are you saying i have no spine because i am contemplative? fuck you you black and white thinking piece of turd.

  • @PanayotiProductions oh man your so deep and contemplative. your original comment was so intellectually stimulating. i must be an imbecile for saying you have no spine. well allow me to get grey. what you said was spineless you may or may not be. i don't really give a fuck. it just bugs me when people talk out of there ass before thinking. its like you were typing as you were thinking. (umm well, i think he's overconfident but i still like him). why don't you try thinking before you type.

  • i like this guy.

  • he's very modest good job kev i'll go see cop out anyways cuz i like bruce willis as a cop since die hard

  • I like him and I own all his "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD's, but something has always frustrated me about him and I figured out what it is.

He has a weird way of doing these interviews, where he spends all his time detailing stuff that happened to him and no time describing the actual process of filmmaking. I think he just relies on his talent, which is why his only comments have been "you can write or you can't," which isn't true...and why he's taken so long to develop as a filmmaker.

  • but you can only write if you can write

  • @murray1234567891011

That implies that if the first thing you write isn't any good then you shouldn't continue. Nothing could be more damaging to say to a group of budding writers or people of any profession. Shane Black's (Lethal Weapon) first story was called "Super Pooper." Quentin Tarantino's first scripts were all 15 pages that ended up going nowhere and he never finished. Should these men have just decided they couldn't write and stopped?

  • I disagree that thats the same thing at all

  • Why do I always become so fascinated by people after watching interviews for them EVERY TIME!

  • Because you get as close to the real person as you (in most cases) will ever be (and that sometimes is so different from what you may believe to know) ;)

  • "And shit like that." Heh, he loves that phrase. I suppose it's infinitely more tolerable than "Know what I'm sayin ?" though.

Lookin forward to his new flicks. Love his work. He's got alot of funny stories behind his career and whatnot. I've watched all these videos a bunch of times I think. Good stuff.

  • or... " At the end of the day!"

  • I know a lot of people give him shit about his directing, but there's more to directing than having cool lighting and shots and crazy shit. Part of good directing is getting a good performance out of the actors in it, and I think Kevin Smith gets great performances out of his actors period.

  • I just noticed theres a bong in the background, the thing to his left in the closet ^^ its black and u cant really see it clearly but im pretty sure thats a bong :P

  • Kevin has admitted to smoking a lot of wacky tobaccy

  • yeah but i thought he quit ^^ cool

  • @alexicon89 agreed

  • I always wanted to know what a great movie maker like Kevin Smith would do with a big budget on an action movie ^^

    cant wait to see it.

  • You know, I love how self-deprecating Kevin is. There's nothing b.s. about the guy. And he always tells a great story.

  • I wonder how many movies he turned down, and which movie scripts they were...

  • What does Kevin Smith has to do with 2012, I'm just wondering.

  • @virtr3uoso nothing

  • my apologies to marco14ortega!!!!!!! i posted that comment before watching it all the way through, again sorry!

  • Is that a bong on the shelf in the background?

  • yes it is....

  • cool name

  • please.. show your ignorance some more

  • Don't you realise that such comments show terrible ignorance on your part? Please consider why you feel this way and you may start to learn where your bigotry comes from, unless, as I assume, it is from your religious beliefs, in which case you are probably beyond help. The reason people accept homosexuality is because they are more intellectually and spiritually advanced than yourself.

  • I absolutely love his honesty. No bullshit, no ego, just exactly what he thinks. Films would be so much better if this attitude was more prevalent in film.

  • @jammsbro Not really, look at Cop Out.

  • i think kevin could be my father. but i know my dad, it matches though.

  • There's nothing wrong with Kevin Smith adding variety to his field of work but I do agree that he shouldn't say "I don't want to do any more View Askew movies"

Lately, he does tend to talk about them as if they're beneath him.

I don't care what other movies he makes but I hope he does return to the View Askewniverse again sometime.

I read somewhere that he promissed Jason Mewes that if he stayed sober for five years, he would write another Jay & Silent Bob movie.

    Here's hoping that's true.

  • it's 2 guys, bob and harvey.

let me apologize on behalf of kev for wanting to grow as a filmmaker and branch out and try something different.

  • hehe that looks like a nice bong

  • which movie did he say he passed on?... se says the name at 11:30 but i can't understand him...

  • Good Will Hunting

  • Good Will Hunting

  • thanks

  • Good Will Hunting

  • Comment removed

  • Kevin is my hero.

Look on the CD/Book shelves on his... left. Middle section, is that a bong .... lol

  • lol it so is!

  • 0.o

  • lol good spot

  • you mean the cat thing?

  • i dont think his films are getting better or worse because as early as clerks was brilliant and as late as clerks 2 was brilliant too but it had its share of good and bad things in between

  • Word.

  • Visually he has actually gotten quite good over the last few years in my opinion. I think each film looks better then the next.
