That was the most exciting, sad, hopeful, delightful, spiritual, funny, moving experience I have ever had in the period of a few minutes. Absolutely brilliant.
I'm so glad I saw this at the Heartland Film Festival. This poem changed my life for the better. I was nearing the brink of disaster when my parents took me to see this, and I have never been more content. Holy.
This poem touches me as I have had someone very close whose life ended too soon. I cry as the depth of his memory shimmers so clear when I listen to this poem, A Finger, Two Dots, Then Me by Derrick Brown. I was affected so much by this poem I had to have Derrick Brown's book, Born in the Year of the Butterfly Knife. I fell in love with Derrick Brown's poetry. He never holds back when he writes. He reaches into the deepest epitome of the heart and causes empathy to flood the soul with emotion.
Oh, Derrick, this is phenomenal. I googled this poem because I'm using it and some of your other works in an essay on the linguistic awesomeness of spoken word poetry for a graduate class, and I can't believe what I found. Wow. Thank you.
Mr. Derrick Brown... I am blessed that a friend of mine, is a fan of you- to have received this link from her. I have watched this a zillion times since it was shared with me, 3 weeks ago... and I have shared with many others. This is 'beautiful'! My heart and soul has been altered by watching this. You, are Holy! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I don't know you, but I would like to hug you... The design in the stars, is the same in our hearts! AFATDA! Best wishes in your future.
this performance...somehow doesn't match the tone of the poem. still a great poem, but feeling is lost in some way-like a piece of white bread, with nothing on it. nice and clean, but not real emotion as it relates to this piece.
@FooFooFlower I'll have to watch it in parts, it makes me remember too many people and animals I've loved and that have loved me. Thanks for the tip in your journal.
@DarkRiderDLMC I get what you mean. I don't have a significant other to speak of, but it seems like death has been more prominent in my life as of late. I think this means more than just a whimsical hope to people like you and me.
On another note: Woah, someone actually read my journal and came to the link?? :O Thank you! You're just out to make my week, aren't you?
People do read journals more often than we give them credit for, I think. I'm glad to be working on makin' your week though. I like to help where I can :-)
It's Nikki, in Amarillo. This has always been my favorite of Derrick's. I'll never forget when he read at it my request shortly after my mother passed away....this video truly does justice to the most beautiful poem there has ever been. Great job, gents.
All I can say is wow... this poem really just says everything I would want to say to my family, friends and lovers at my funeral.. but I know I'm not going to wait that long i will share it with them now... Thank you Derrick... this really is the most amazing love poem I have ever heard!
When I first heard this poem back in 2008, it inspired me to write once again. Three years later, it still has the ability to make me wish to be something more. thank you, Mr.Brown.
refreshingly relaxed vibe to this...i liked it. i've just recently re-discovered my own poetry "voice" and checking out others' as well. the topic is close to my heart also, at this stage in the game...
