  • McCoy Tyner one of the best artist. Excellent.

  • tyner kinda looks like billy d williams

  • Way to go dad. Thank you for inspiring me to play the drums <3

  • Jazz:

The swiftest movement of artistic intelligence ever devised.

  • It is so smoothyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

  • Es una cancion que hace muy feliz !

Scuse me, it is a joke but je le pense vraiment.

  • The BIG surprise for me here is how exquisite Avery Sharpe's playing is! How did I miss this guy back in the day? He combines Ron Carter's sound with Stanley Clarke's technique and funkiness and does it beautifully! Thanks for more McCoy too. Wow!

  • Genius piece by Monk and very good performed by Mccoy Tyner and co.

  • I'm just sitting hear (sic) at every pang of the Keyboard! Modern day Jesus!

  • talent, finesse, power, my favorite pianist

  • Dig how loose yet driving Aaron Scott is.

  • in a sense Monk and McCoy are totally opposite....something maybe should be written about it....but in another way there is this "beat" thing which both have Mc Coy can be opening the oyster that Monk carefully grew or is it something else? hahaha

  • What a trio ! I discover the drummer Aaron Scott : it is, with à Mc Coy's soloo a CD, the best version I heard here !

Mc Coy is one of the best piano player : he must be more known !

  • This is definitely the best version I have heard of this song in my entire life. Awesome. Outstanding musicians.

  • Como se fossem nuvens...Suavidade, leveza e precisão

  • don't forget the heart of the african slaves!

  • @scentamanta beautifully said.

  • Yeah yeah yeah!!

  • This jam session here...makes me smile...drummer in the pocket with the STAND -UP BASS PLAYER...whew...sweet!!!

  • Aaron Scott used to be my music teacher!!!! He teached me to play the clarinet and now because of him i love music =]

  • One of the best pieces I have ever heard (and seen)...

  • AARON SCOTT!

  • just played this tune, this personally is my favorite tune of Monk, and with McCoy's powerful pianos solo make everything feel so good.

  • this is superb :) fantastic. Tyner playing Monk - doesnt get much better :)

  • Except for Monk playing Monk.

  • Drummer is great! I like his rubber wrist style. Interesting

  • Sweet.

  • Aaron Scott, extraordinary, amazing drummer.

  • Bemonk :)

  • this swings so damn hard, i just lay down and enjoy the ride

  • Shit, I LOVE the McCoy Tyner Trio. All three of them are such great musicians.

  • Fabulous.

Does anyone know what kind/style of Jazz this is?

  • piano jazz ;)

  • Fuckin monk

  • i love how he appears to be banging his left hand even though his technique is actually impeccable. If only Avery's bass tone didn't suck.

  • i agree, i absolutely hate the bass tone. it reminds of ron carter's tone off of the Herbie Hancock album: V.S.O.P One Of a Kind

    its real tinny and gross

  • When was this?

  • look at introduction, in title

  • Man the groove is hot, and the drummer just adds to it!!! solid trio. Probly the best version i've heard of this song.

  • Has Monk's dream come true this day? I can see true equality on the horizon.

  • You guys on the USA , you have invented the best music of the XX century and Mc coy is one example of the best , Thanks

  • see, not EVERYTHING we do is bad!

  • hahahaha...of course not

  • @gracebinder - agreed, but us stoopid yankees can't ever remember to support it.

  • @quagga88 - Lol.... dont worry in the USA jazz grows by itself

  • lol - the last 2 seconds of this clip are hilariously anti climatic after such a dazzling performance - my god where did Tyner come from?

  • i would guess from his mother.

  • I just had some serious LOL'z.

  • McCoy is bad ass i saw him and bobby hutcherson in boston 1996 A true giant in modern music.

this is a smooth and tight trio WOW!

    Nice tune!

  • yeah!thats the spirit!

    thank u man for this!

  • who is the drummer???

  • Aaron Scott - drums

    he is great!!!

  • awesome

  • It's so much easier to listen to Tyner when someone is keeping the tempo. :(

  • what did you intend to express?

  • True masters at their craft... !

  • worderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Man I just love this video - all 3 of them are killin' it! I had the pleasure of playing in a trio with Avery back in the 70's and then he left me to join McCoy. Go figure! ;-)

  • Odd how I watch this video right after watching what you sent me. The must have been how you got here too. XD

  • ... they are bringing life!!!!

  • AMEN!!!!

  • say a-men, some-body!!

  • thanks for posting this! i used to see this trio alot and they had a great feeling! aaron scott is a unique drummer who i really enjoyed with mccoy. i noticed that when they played, you could see the circles in their movements. real mastery is a both humbling and an education. avery used to do these long solos with strumming inspired by jimmy garrison. the spirit and power of these musicians truly gives homage to the Creator!

    thanks again for posting!

  • Mabey you should send in your criticism of this video to any jazz magazine and see if you can become an editor. If you do let me know so I can be sure to send some one out to assassinate you for being an idiot.

  • Interesting. Sort of like Tyner is the "anti-Monk". Monk tries to pair down the music to the essentials, eliminating the banal, feverishly avoiding ordinary patterns, yet ending up with amazing rhythmic complexity. Tyner's rhythm is actually quite ordinary, and with his steroid chords, he paints right over Monk's lean composition.

  • well before i say anythin. i love monk and tyner. both genius. also i don't like this video. but monk is king of patterns with his wholetone runs and the like. and (well not in this video) mccoy is master of rhythmic complexities, far beyond monks cracked out fingers. in a sense i agree, great tune, shit performance

  • What is it then Mr Drumminggenius? What do you feel is the criteria of something that is not a shit performance? If you indeed consider this performance so bad why don't you enlighten the misled people of youtube with some of your videos? Why aren't you on the cover of Downbeat for your drumming skills? judging by your comment im sure you are way better than Aaron Scott?

  • I like how Aarons Scott's drumming gives the song a slight rock feel. Great performances by all. Thanks for putting this video on youtube.

  • Lejos lo mas grande que hay, una fuente inagotable de ideas hermosas y recursos e improvisacion, que ningún pianista posee.Armónicamente buenísimo.

  • uauuuu!!!! Wonderfullllllllllll

  • i rather like to see tyner mccoy play this tune without too much pedal work

  • Is that kind of saying you'd like to drive a Ferrari without stepping on the gas?

  • well its all about self control and moderacy .

  • I can appreciate that, I guess it all comes down to styles and individual preferences. For example, some people think John Mclaughlin's style is just about speed, same with John Coltrane, however It's more about the frequency at which one chooses to communicates, a personal approach. I guess if I had a choice between minimal and Mccoy I would choose McCoy hands down. Peace bro!

  • Too much pedal work? That's just the way mccoy plays. I'm glad that he played his own version of it, rather than trying to copy monk.

  • it's interesting to hear Tyner playing a Monk tune, just because his comping and voicings are so much more dense then Monk's. That's part of why jazz is so great. This is good tune and they make it groove hard.

  • That`s musical power!

  • That's right, You tube helps the public keep the music out of the hands of the music industry which doesn't give a damn about true art. Thank God for the internet! The industry is powerless against the current internet tsunami.

  • All of them are playing their faces off!
