The BIG surprise for me here is how exquisite Avery Sharpe's playing is! How did I miss this guy back in the day? He combines Ron Carter's sound with Stanley Clarke's technique and funkiness and does it beautifully! Thanks for more McCoy too. Wow!
in a sense Monk and McCoy are totally opposite....something maybe should be written about it....but in another way there is this "beat" thing which both have Mc Coy can be opening the oyster that Monk carefully grew or is it something else? hahaha
Man I just love this video - all 3 of them are killin' it! I had the pleasure of playing in a trio with Avery back in the 70's and then he left me to join McCoy. Go figure! ;-)
thanks for posting this! i used to see this trio alot and they had a great feeling! aaron scott is a unique drummer who i really enjoyed with mccoy. i noticed that when they played, you could see the circles in their movements. real mastery is a both humbling and an education. avery used to do these long solos with strumming inspired by jimmy garrison. the spirit and power of these musicians truly gives homage to the Creator!
Mabey you should send in your criticism of this video to any jazz magazine and see if you can become an editor. If you do let me know so I can be sure to send some one out to assassinate you for being an idiot.
Interesting. Sort of like Tyner is the "anti-Monk". Monk tries to pair down the music to the essentials, eliminating the banal, feverishly avoiding ordinary patterns, yet ending up with amazing rhythmic complexity. Tyner's rhythm is actually quite ordinary, and with his steroid chords, he paints right over Monk's lean composition.
well before i say anythin. i love monk and tyner. both genius. also i don't like this video. but monk is king of patterns with his wholetone runs and the like. and (well not in this video) mccoy is master of rhythmic complexities, far beyond monks cracked out fingers. in a sense i agree, great tune, shit performance
What is it then Mr Drumminggenius? What do you feel is the criteria of something that is not a shit performance? If you indeed consider this performance so bad why don't you enlighten the misled people of youtube with some of your videos? Why aren't you on the cover of Downbeat for your drumming skills? judging by your comment im sure you are way better than Aaron Scott?
I can appreciate that, I guess it all comes down to styles and individual preferences. For example, some people think John Mclaughlin's style is just about speed, same with John Coltrane, however It's more about the frequency at which one chooses to communicates, a personal approach. I guess if I had a choice between minimal and Mccoy I would choose McCoy hands down. Peace bro!
it's interesting to hear Tyner playing a Monk tune, just because his comping and voicings are so much more dense then Monk's. That's part of why jazz is so great. This is good tune and they make it groove hard.

je me demande vraiment comment mccoy tyner a pu entrainer les doigts de sa main droite à être aussi foudroyant dans les "solo" qu'il aborde

i love how he appears to be banging his left hand even though his technique is actually impeccable. If only Avery's bass tone didn't suck.

i agree, i absolutely hate the bass tone. it reminds of ron carter's tone off of the Herbie Hancock album: V.S.O.P One Of a Kind
its real tinny and gross
