I saw SRV 5 times, even on the midnight blues cruise with Pine top Perkins in NOLA, and he was wonderful, but to say Clapton doesnt have the soul is ludicrous. Clapton is more reserved , but can cut headswith the best of the best. Remembering how much soul albert King could put in just one note, less may be better
The grateful dead's version on Europe 72 is still my favorite. The dead put emotion into their music, this is seriously emotionless for a blues song.... hate to say this but this verson is weak.
@TheGratefulDread14 dude you couldnt have said it better... pigpen is singing his heart out in the 72 version because it was the one song he played the best with the dead and they had put him on bongos in the back for pretty much every other song seeing he was in such rough shape at that point.... he died a few months later in 73 and that was the end of the pigpen blues era of the dead.. RIP
elmore james cover? how many times am i gonna have to tell people... IT HURTS ME TOO IS A SONG BY TAMPA RED, NOT ELMORE JAMES! even tho elmore covered it, tampa made it
@mookieisfraud Tampa Red first recorded this, you're right. however this arrangement is basically a straight cover of Elmores recording. and not a patch on it, in my honest opinion. clearly i'm going to get shot down here, but clapton to me always sounds like a weak version of the artists he so clearly aspires to sound like. there's always somthing missing in his sound, to me. like he has all the licks, but none of the soul...
@IndependentGeorge76 you're right, many clapton fans would like to shoot you now ;)
I respect your opinion, although i think this talking about not having soul is a quite regular argument against any "modern" guitarist (post 50s or so). I think every guitarist has soul in his playing, it simply sometimes differs from what you want to hear, or maybe your prejudices about an artist influence your hearing (I for example had that problem with SRV)
@tormentor91 the difference i see between SRV and clapton is that SRV always seemed to give 110% and therefore alot of that "soul" would come out of him, i can't say the same about clapton, thats one of the reasons i consider SRV to be the better guitarist
@IndependentGeorge76 you couldn't have said it better, always thought the same too but no matter who you say that to, they just look at you like your an idiot
I'm Fran Raya a female singer/songwriter from the UK. I supported Eric Clapton on his Scandinavian tour performing my own songs. He is a master musician and singer. The memories of touring with him are still vivid. So proud to be asked to do so.
An older guy I worked with in Philly use to play this all the time & immediately went out & bought thus gem. I'm also an ex hip-hop head led by the musical genius of Prince.
I always feel that Claptons pieces can capture the form of the music, but the substance seems beyond him. The playing for sure is very good but it lacks that special something.
I guess that what I mean is that, when a cover is trying to be so faithful I just can't get the original out of my head. No insult to clapton, just really cannot approach the original because it is sensational.
ah. yea i see what you mean. i think its always hard to get the original out of your head. or at least the one you heard first. for me, ive always heard the covers first before the original blues greats. so to me, its a little strange hearing the older ones. to me, it feels like somethings missing. but i guess its the opposite for you. its all good though.
This is the most beautiful song I have yet heard by EC. Really touches the heart and makes one feel as if there is someone out in this cold world who will always care.
suppose you heard this and had no idea who it was(hard to do I know....)what would you think?this is great

I agree completely; he empitomizes empty virtuosity. He wouldn't have any problem following this with a light duet with Paul McCartney.

why is Clapton able to do old blues numbers respectably? Because he KNOWS them and LOVES them.

I love the lead and rhythm guitar sounds on this one. Great drive that lacks in most blues songs.

This is pretty damn good, but the Elmore James original is much better, especially with the piano as loud as it is on that version.
