Hey I have a question: on your site you also offer a Black One NOS for 1600$ but there are no pics of that guitar, is that a identical replica of the fender limited run of 500 black one guitars, or something else? Would love a replica of the shiny piano black guitar haha!
@WarlikeSRK I need to get a picture up there. Sorry about that! Its just like the 500 NOS black1's only finished in nitro paint instead of poly. If you email me I can send you a few pictures.
How is the sound of this custom-relic-guitar compared with a fender?? I want to buy this one from Tokyo:).Fender limited edition "BLACK 1" is too expensive to buy.But this guitar price is exactly good for buying and nice relic!
@maySRV1 Our guitars play, feel and sound like Custom Shop/Masterbuilt model strats. They are all made in america, hand made and hand assembled and are all made from equal or better quality wood than Fender uses. We took every single spec from the masterbuilt 83 limited edition black1's and recreate it. We even took exact pickup readings and winding specs from the pickups used in the limited black1's.
@maySRV1 Our guitars speak for themselves. You can hear how great they sound by watching our uploaded videos on youtube. We even play one of our black1's through a John Mayer signature Two-Rock. Email us for a full list of specs and payment options at toomanypedals@hotmail.com. We can get started on building you a guitar for as little as $500 down!
@AntiRellik The one in this video was my first attempt at a black1. I used a real fender. Now we use the highest quality Fender replacement parts money can buy. Since we buy all of our bodies and necks unpainted we can make a much better guitar and paint them in 100% nitro paint. We can start with a genuine fender guitar but the end result is never as good and ends up being much more expensive. Our guitars are comparable to custom shop/masterbuilt. check out our facebook page
@LucasPinarbasi THis was my first attempt at a black1. It didnt turn out that well! This is what custom-relics' black1's look like now: watch?v=Mj1rRDbNlR8
@Fitzliputzli23 John Mayer trying to copy SRV tone is John Mayer tone. THats what makes someone's tone unique is trying to sound like someone else and failing to. WHat youre left with is a tone that is all your own.
@fenderibo Its perfect for home use. It can get quiet or loud pretty easy. Its way too loud for an office or small apartment but it can get great tones at bedroom levels. You can also crank it up when nobody's home and/or jam with a band with it too.
the only problem i have with the strats with texas specials is that the necks r really fat and wide and i just dont have jimi hendrix's or srv's hands lol guess ill just buy a standard strat and swap the pick ups :{D
i have been trying to get the clean sound you get at 3:26, unsuccessfully though...do you remember the settings you used at that time? also, did you use any chorus, delay effects for that tone? thanks for your help. i enjoyed the demo.
@CScout671 Bass around 2:00, treble around 12:00, bass around 10:30, master at bedroom level (about 2) reverb around 9:00 and presence around 12:00. NO delay, compression, chorus or any effect. Straight clean channel into the hot rod deluxe. Pickups play a huge roll in this tone. What amp/guitar/ pickups you using?
@libertyfalls thanks for the response. i just upgraded to a fender blues deluxe...with a MIM strat (maple neck) with texas specials...also you have two bass settings in your response. is one of them supposed to be the mids setting? if so, which one? thanks again for sharing, really appreciate it. greetings from Guam, BTW...
@libertyfalls Can't thank you enough for your help...finally got to try the settings today and it worked out quite well. Thanks again for your generosity in sharing your knowledge about this. Good luck in your future endeavors!
@randomtwit Not at all. I used a Fender Wildwood series flame maple neck on the one in this video but thanks for letting me know that using copyrighted logos are illegal. Since I own and operate a business that makes replica Fender guitars Ive never ran into that before. Thanks for looking out... THINK BEFORE YOU TROLL!
@randomtwit I'd say only if you want to sell them as genuine, I sold many warmoth necks with fender logos on them on ebay, but Never said they were fender, no probs.
@baw414 THey all look the same for the most part. THis guitar in the video was my first attempt at a black1 and didnt turn out very well. Check out custom-relics to see what they look like now. Its spooky how close ours looks to the real thing. Also check out our custom-relics facebook page for a hundred pictures or so of the different guitars we have made including the black one.
i think this was mentioned on your website but you have two sets of pups: Texas Specials and Black1 clones. these Texas Specials seem to have gotten pretty close to the JM sound...can you tell us more about the Black1 clone pups?
@jshinster1 The texas specials are awesome pickups and get really nice fat and clean sounds. The black1 clones are more vintage sounding like SRV. THey are wound with the old school 42g formvar wire. THe texas specials are wound with the more modern enamel wire. They both sound good but the clones get you "that" sound. Plus the amp and pedals are set to sound like Mayer's stuff anyway so the clones are that little extra to make it perfect.
i see no point in your comment, if you want to play a song you must learn it in the correct form, it's an offense to jonh mayer, men, i feel bad for your thought !
@millos13star Well, given the many songs John Mayer performs and has recorded that are covers. He does completely different than the originals. For example, wait until tomorrow by Hendrix, and Free Fallin'. So .. you're defending a person whos doing exactly what you're arguing against. Imean , I would understand if you cant afford a Black1 like liberty here.. DON"T HATE, APPRECIATE.
@millos13star dude you need to get on here and show us how to play it perfectly. Until that most unlikely event happens we will enjoy watching people that can play it to the frankly outstanding level as the maker of this video
@millos13star I see no point in learning other people's songs note for note. I get the basic idea and just play with it. I leave playing it note for note to cover bands that have no character.
Nice playing and Im also gonna order this guitar. Nice tones. Stupid question, whay is your string gauge and amp for this? I use a fender 112 bluesdeville.
@p1ayn We would love to build you one! We only have 2 brazilian rosewood necks left! Im using d'addario 11's in this video but am using d'addario 10's now. Your amp is either a blues deville 212, blues deville 410 or blues deluxe 112. Im using a hot rod deluxe 112. Pretty much the same amp for clean channel.
@RAW040 I would suggest the custom-relics black1 clone pickups for best mayer tone but texas specials and big dippers are essentially the same pickup. So Id go with the texas specials if you dont want to go the boutique pickup route.
@libertyfalls Don't the texas specials and big dippers vary greatly because the TS's are high output where the BD's are low-med output? Also the mids are scooped with the BD's.
@Danklin24 THey are the same output just voiced a little differently. THey sound pretty close to me. Not worth paying double or triple the price for the big dippers.
Check out the videos by TheKountis01. He really got the tone very well. This is pretty good, though. I truly believe that you need the Big Dippers in order to achieve the tone. EQ just doesn't cut it.
@jaronee People that tell me Im not playing the licks right are funny... Im not out to replicate John Mayer. I only half ass learn these riffs to demo the tone. I have my own music to worry about. Learning riffs and songs exactly are for cover bands.
@libertyfalls Killer tone, I was getting a set of these for one of my Strats anyway but after your video I went the NEXT day and bought them. They sound amazing but its also the guitar they are in. I tried some texas specials in a cheaper strat that wasn't set up so well and it had no punch or sting and was just sucky but they sound amazing in your strat and I love them in mine.
@willeng84 Very cool! A lot of people dont realize that putting nice pickups in a crappy guitar doesnt do much. You have to have all the parts working as a team for a good sounding instrument.
@libertyfalls Yeah brother, but cheap doesn't ALWAYS have to do with price tag. My buddy got a MIM thinline telecaster and I will say without a doubt plays and feels better that 60% of the American standard strats/teles in the world. I have no shame in saying it feels better than my black american made statocaster. I have an 89' red Statocaster, I was told it was a deluxe when I bought it but not knowing if they made an upraded version then I am not sure but the neck is FLAWLESS. BEST EVER!
I don't understand guys who "relic" a guitar to that extent. Such a beautiful instrument aesthetically ruined. It looks so unnatural to me. How would paint chip from the pickguard's lower border in the cutaway like that?? It just doesn't occur naturally that way. Dear Lord man it's too much for me. I polish my guitars like a maniac and use compressed air on every nook. To each his own.
@mayerfan09 YESSSSS! Dammit!! I also wash my hands and purell before I play as to minimize oil/dirt transfer to the strings! Stop beating up ur guitars....;)
@libertyfalls I have an American Special HSS strat which should do the trick for now I think (Texas Specials in neck and middle). So the clean tone is...clean? No effects other than the amp settings right? Then your path is Fulldrive 2, BB-1, ZenDrive, Compulator?
@sdr7seven at 7:45 the zendrive gets turned on. The fulldrive 2 was already on. I like stacking overdrives. THe zendrive is not on by itslef in this video. Pretty much the last few minutes of the video are the zendrive and fulldrive on together.
@joesosa41 whats a strategy? Is it a pedal or something?
VOlume as loud as you can stand it. ANywhere below 9:00. treble at 1:00 mids at 10:00 low at 2:00, presence at 1:00 reverb at 8:00. Clean channel with bright switch off
What are your settings on the Hot Rod for Slow Dancing and Little Wing??? I've got a HRD II MIM and the actual Fender Custom Shop Black One but i can't get it to sound anywhere near like that!!!
@tylerdavisss VOlume as loud as you can stand it. ANywhere below 9:00. treble at 1:00 mids at 10:00 low at 2:00, presence at 1:00 reverb at 8:00. Clean channel with bright switch off. Hope that helps!
@tylerdavisss i really comes down to the fingers, maybe you fingers just wasn't made to sound like mayers. But maybe other people like the sound you get as much as you love the mayer tone ^^.
@tylerdavisss I own and operate custom-relics. This was my first crappy attempt at a black1. They have since become about 10,000,000 times better than this one here! Check out our black1's at custom-relics. Get essentially the same guitar for a fraction of the price!
I can understand buying an artist series guitar maybe to decorate your room in dedication to said artist, but why buy to play it? Wouldn't it be better to start from scratch and see what you like so you can sound more like a unique player? Even if you do buy an artist guitar to play, you won't get their tone. Tone depends on how well the guitar is kept, the strings, amp, even how hard you press with your fingers. Also your pick and how soft/hard you pick. It doesn't make sense.
@jonahtran1 Same reason why people want a black trans am like smokey and the bandit, replica movie props and stuff like that. Some people want to emulate guitar heroes and some people dont need a reason. If its cool they buy it. I understand where youre coming from but you need to see where the other people are coming from.
@libertyfalls I can understand having it just to have it. There are a couple artist-guitars I'd buy. Not to play though. Maybe just to get them autographed and hung on my wall. But they are specifically made to suit that artist's playing. No matter how much I love Jeff Beck's playing I could never replicate his tone and style exactly because I am not Jeff Beck nor do I know everything about him. It's the type of person you are that determines your personal style. Not just the music you listen to
@stretch90 Well I'll give em that. I mean they have top notch equipment in it. But it's made to replicate the artist's personal tastes. Not everyone is the same.
Not as big as johns tone if you can kind of see what i'm saying, but that's probably due to a low volume? Other than that pretty much nailed it and played well. Your hands are HUGE though!
Wow you really nailed his tone , great playing by the way , love the way you can just casually learn those songs , would take me half a life time. Great vid thanks for posting
@LazyGamerMike Thanks! What I usually do is look at the tab for the main part I want to learn. Just to see what position its played in and to get the general idea of whas going on and then I learn the rest by ear. Its not perfect by any means but its close enough.
cracks me up everyone wanting the "john mayer" tone. what a joke. JM is just copying Stevie Ray Vaughn. That's why he uses everything SRV used. Even his old sound man. John is no innovator just a copy cat
@spicecrop Did SRV use Two Rock amps? And if you listen closely BOTH guitarist know how to use the strong characteristics of a Stratocaster. Copycat my ass! He does have some pretty standard licks, but who doesn't!?
@spicecrop it's not jealousy it's a fact ,SRV was the best ,and he had best tone ever .No shame ,even opposite ,i think it's an honor and it has to be an honor that people compare you to this legend !
blues jr has a 12" speaker smart guy, what do you mean by small? compared to a 15" maybe but hardly small. Pro jr is the one with a small speaker. get your facts right
@spicecrop I sincerely apologize for my gross oversight in this, the most important discussion I have ever taken part of. If you could find it in your heart to forgive me I would be forever in debt to you fine sir. I will go far and tell tales of your good will and wisdom about all things musical.
Looks like 2 inches is a lot to you. Looks like you are trying to compensate for something.... Troll....
@markpreecemusic Yes, as long as its on the clean channel you should be good to go! The overdrive channel isnt very good in my opinion but they are a great clean platform.
@ZackZaroMusicChannel The blues Jr. is better than a lot of amps out there in its price range but I dont suggest it for JM tone. SImply because the speaker is very small and there is no headroom because of the low wattage. My best suggestion for JM tone on a blues JR. is to turn up the master volume all the way up or almost all the way up and use your volume on the amp to set volume. You will need to play with your guitar's volume knob as well to get a nice pure clean sound.
Hey man I own a Vox DA5 and I'd really like to improve (and soon) in the amp department. What affordable amp do you recommend to get close to the JM tone?
Hi! I really recognize you'r work as a guitar player and a professional. I just got my custom shop texas special on my strat, and as I said I wanted the john mayer tone, the pickups are grate for, but I got a awful amp "roland cube 30x" and it doesn't help that much with the tone don't you thing? What kind of a distortion or overdrive pedal should I use to improve JM tone? with your relic job how do you get the little pieces of paint on the body of the guitar? remove all paint and repaint?
@Samprayer2 There is really no substitute for a nice amp. Really any amp will be better than what you have. I would focus on getting that before absolutely anything.
@Fabioapf The texas specials are a bit hotter, a little more versatile and are a very modern pickup. the 57/62 pickups are vintage voiced. THey are wound with different wire, have beveled magnets and dont work quite as well with distortions but work better with overdrives. They are both good. I personally like the 57/62 for clean playing.
nice playing! what's the second song that you played called?

Check out the videos by TheKountis01. He really got the tone very well. This is pretty good, though. I truly believe that you need the Big Dippers in order to achieve the tone. EQ just doesn't cut it.

great tone, too bad the lick isn't correct. haha
jaronee 5 months ago
@jaronee People that tell me Im not playing the licks right are funny... Im not out to replicate John Mayer. I only half ass learn these riffs to demo the tone. I have my own music to worry about. Learning riffs and songs exactly are for cover bands.
libertyfalls 5 months ago 17
@libertyfalls Killer tone, I was getting a set of these for one of my Strats anyway but after your video I went the NEXT day and bought them. They sound amazing but its also the guitar they are in. I tried some texas specials in a cheaper strat that wasn't set up so well and it had no punch or sting and was just sucky but they sound amazing in your strat and I love them in mine.
willeng84 4 months ago
@willeng84 Very cool! A lot of people dont realize that putting nice pickups in a crappy guitar doesnt do much. You have to have all the parts working as a team for a good sounding instrument.
libertyfalls 4 months ago
@libertyfalls Yeah brother, but cheap doesn't ALWAYS have to do with price tag. My buddy got a MIM thinline telecaster and I will say without a doubt plays and feels better that 60% of the American standard strats/teles in the world. I have no shame in saying it feels better than my black american made statocaster. I have an 89' red Statocaster, I was told it was a deluxe when I bought it but not knowing if they made an upraded version then I am not sure but the neck is FLAWLESS. BEST EVER!

That is beautiful world class tone and playing.
maripocita37 5 months ago
i dont think you understand how badly i want that tone, and i cant seem to freaking get it, what are u using besides the pickups?
gould0453 6 months ago
@gould0453 John Mayer strat from custom-relics
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Special Edition
Marshal BB-1 clone from General Guitar Gadgets
Fulldrive 2
ZenDrive
Demeter Compulator
Most of the clip is just on the clean channel on the 4th position (neck and middle pickups)
Hope that helps!
libertyfalls 6 months ago 2
what the amp settings you use?
thanks!
leowgtr 6 months ago
I don't understand guys who "relic" a guitar to that extent. Such a beautiful instrument aesthetically ruined. It looks so unnatural to me. How would paint chip from the pickguard's lower border in the cutaway like that?? It just doesn't occur naturally that way. Dear Lord man it's too much for me. I polish my guitars like a maniac and use compressed air on every nook. To each his own.

@mayerfan09 YESSSSS! Dammit!! I also wash my hands and purell before I play as to minimize oil/dirt transfer to the strings! Stop beating up ur guitars....;)

what zendrive do you use???1 or 2??
ichi612 6 months ago
@ichi612 I use the zendrive 1. Not the tube version.
libertyfalls 6 months ago
@libertyfalls I have an American Special HSS strat which should do the trick for now I think (Texas Specials in neck and middle). So the clean tone is...clean? No effects other than the amp settings right? Then your path is Fulldrive 2, BB-1, ZenDrive, Compulator?
kevanprince 6 months ago
At what point in the video is the Zendrive on? I just got one and I'm curious which clip it's used on.
sdr7seven 6 months ago
@sdr7seven at 7:45 the zendrive gets turned on. The fulldrive 2 was already on. I like stacking overdrives. THe zendrive is not on by itslef in this video. Pretty much the last few minutes of the video are the zendrive and fulldrive on together.
libertyfalls 6 months ago
@libertyfalls yep--makes perfect sense. Can u tell me where you have the settings on the Zendrive? Great video BTW.
sdr7seven 6 months ago
@sdr7seven Volume at unity, tone at 1:00, voice at 3:00 gain at 10:00
libertyfalls 6 months ago
Hey I have the same pickups, what pickup position are u using?
jmps2812 6 months ago
@jmps2812 Usually the neck pickup. For clean Mayer tones I use position 4 (neck and middle) for songs like slow dancing, belief and gravity.
libertyfalls 6 months ago
@jmps2812 vultures I use position 2 (bridge and middle)
libertyfalls 6 months ago
I can get a similar John Mayer tone with my strategy and HRD. What are your EQs on yours? You never specified.
joesosa41 6 months ago
@joesosa41 whats a strategy? Is it a pedal or something?
VOlume as loud as you can stand it. ANywhere below 9:00. treble at 1:00 mids at 10:00 low at 2:00, presence at 1:00 reverb at 8:00. Clean channel with bright switch off
libertyfalls 6 months ago
@libertyfalls Lawl, sorry. My "smart" phone auto-corrected "strat".
joesosa41 6 months ago
What are your settings on the Hot Rod for Slow Dancing and Little Wing??? I've got a HRD II MIM and the actual Fender Custom Shop Black One but i can't get it to sound anywhere near like that!!!
tylerdavisss 6 months ago

Get essentially the same guitar for a fraction of the price!
libertyfalls 6 months ago
I can understand buying an artist series guitar maybe to decorate your room in dedication to said artist, but why buy to play it? Wouldn't it be better to start from scratch and see what you like so you can sound more like a unique player? Even if you do buy an artist guitar to play, you won't get their tone. Tone depends on how well the guitar is kept, the strings, amp, even how hard you press with your fingers. Also your pick and how soft/hard you pick. It doesn't make sense.
jonahtran1 6 months ago
@jonahtran1 Same reason why people want a black trans am like smokey and the bandit, replica movie props and stuff like that. Some people want to emulate guitar heroes and some people dont need a reason. If its cool they buy it. I understand where youre coming from but you need to see where the other people are coming from.
libertyfalls 6 months ago 2
@libertyfalls I can understand having it just to have it. There are a couple artist-guitars I'd buy. Not to play though. Maybe just to get them autographed and hung on my wall. But they are specifically made to suit that artist's playing. No matter how much I love Jeff Beck's playing I could never replicate his tone and style exactly because I am not Jeff Beck nor do I know everything about him. It's the type of person you are that determines your personal style. Not just the music you listen to
jonahtran1 6 months ago
@jonahtran1
I find that a lot of these signature guitars/amps sound amazing
stretch90 6 months ago
@stretch90 Well I'll give em that. I mean they have top notch equipment in it. But it's made to replicate the artist's personal tastes. Not everyone is the same.
jonahtran1 6 months ago
@jonahtran1
yeah, I definitely agree with that.
stretch90 6 months ago
Great playing man. What are the settings on that hot rod?
Chaarlieandtaate 6 months ago
Not as big as johns tone if you can kind of see what i'm saying, but that's probably due to a low volume? Other than that pretty much nailed it and played well. Your hands are HUGE though!
lsdman14 6 months ago
@lsdman14 Very true. Any louder and the camer volume would clip out and sound like crap. Sounds WAY better at full stage volume.

sounds good brotha! now give me your guitar!!! lol
Stratmater 8 months ago
awesome video bro! did u learn the songs by ear? they're well done
LazyGamerMike 8 months ago
@LazyGamerMike Thanks! What I usually do is look at the tab for the main part I want to learn. Just to see what position its played in and to get the general idea of whas going on and then I learn the rest by ear. Its not perfect by any means but its close enough.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
cracks me up everyone wanting the "john mayer" tone. what a joke. JM is just copying Stevie Ray Vaughn. That's why he uses everything SRV used. Even his old sound man. John is no innovator just a copy cat
spicecrop 8 months ago
@spicecrop So jealous....
libertyfalls 8 months ago
@spicecrop Did SRV use Two Rock amps? And if you listen closely BOTH guitarist know how to use the strong characteristics of a Stratocaster. Copycat my ass! He does have some pretty standard licks, but who doesn't!?
kennethmusic1 8 months ago
@spicecrop it's not jealousy it's a fact ,SRV was the best ,and he had best tone ever .No shame ,even opposite ,i think it's an honor and it has to be an honor that people compare you to this legend !
ijevtic 8 months ago
blues jr has a 12" speaker smart guy, what do you mean by small? compared to a 15" maybe but hardly small. Pro jr is the one with a small speaker. get your facts right
spicecrop 8 months ago
@spicecrop I sincerely apologize for my gross oversight in this, the most important discussion I have ever taken part of. If you could find it in your heart to forgive me I would be forever in debt to you fine sir. I will go far and tell tales of your good will and wisdom about all things musical.
Looks like 2 inches is a lot to you. Looks like you are trying to compensate for something.... Troll....
libertyfalls 8 months ago 5
sounds awesome do you think think i could get the same tone out of the new mk iii hot rod deluxe and a JM signature model? awesome playing too!
markpreecemusic 8 months ago
@markpreecemusic Yes, as long as its on the clean channel you should be good to go! The overdrive channel isnt very good in my opinion but they are a great clean platform.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
@libertyfalls awesome you should cover try by the trio! but thanks for the advice man much appreciated!
markpreecemusic 8 months ago
Are the Texas special pickups noiseless?
swedishx07 8 months ago
@swedishx07 Technically no.. They are normally made. With proper shielding and grounding most single coils dont buzz much.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
i got a blues junior, hows that for the JM tone? and what pedals should i get to get mor of that tone?
ZackZaroMusicChannel 8 months ago
@ZackZaroMusicChannel The blues Jr. is better than a lot of amps out there in its price range but I dont suggest it for JM tone. SImply because the speaker is very small and there is no headroom because of the low wattage. My best suggestion for JM tone on a blues JR. is to turn up the master volume all the way up or almost all the way up and use your volume on the amp to set volume. You will need to play with your guitar's volume knob as well to get a nice pure clean sound.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
Is that a song at 0:54??? If so what is the name because its beautiful....
Jared7580 8 months ago
@Jared7580 Slow dancing in a burning room. You should hear Mayer play it. I play a really half assed version of it.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
Hey man I own a Vox DA5 and I'd really like to improve (and soon) in the amp department. What affordable amp do you recommend to get close to the JM tone?
manu1695 8 months ago
@manu1695 Best affordable amp for JM tone is definitely the Hot rod deluxe or hot rod deville 2x12 is you play live.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
@libertyfalls Cool thanks:)
manu1695 8 months ago
Samprayer2 8 months ago
@Samprayer2 There is really no substitute for a nice amp. Really any amp will be better than what you have. I would focus on getting that before absolutely anything.
libertyfalls 8 months ago
Dude...you have huge fucking hands. I wish I had your hands. :|
Those thumb over the top type grips are so hard for me. :'(
12ozElephant 8 months ago
Hello congratulations, you think the best Tx's to 57/62?
Fabioapf 9 months ago
@Fabioapf The texas specials are a bit hotter, a little more versatile and are a very modern pickup. the 57/62 pickups are vintage voiced. THey are wound with different wire, have beveled magnets and dont work quite as well with distortions but work better with overdrives. They are both good. I personally like the 57/62 for clean playing.
