obviously no one here is a musician. His vocal chops are outstanding, his melodies and rhythms are awesome, and his songwriting skills are really good. Besides this, as a multi-instrumentalist i have the grounds to say that he is REALLY technical on guitar. The stuff he plays is reallllly hard to emulate. Not to mention, his style is super bluesy, which no other artist as successful as him in a long time can say. He doesnt use synthesizers and mere catchiness, he uses talent.

Secondly John Mayers chordal usage is basic. You'll hardly hear him using a variety of chord extensions or subs. And his playing definitely isnt unique. He sounds like just about any other average blues guitar player. From the cliche chord hammer ons and pull offs.. to the repetitive pentatonic licks. Do you play guitar?

I first thought that Battle Studies sucks really hard but you have to listen to a JM LP for about 2 hours to really appreciate the music and the lyrics although I think that Taylor Swift wasn't the best choice for the duet (Would have loved to see Sara Bareilles instead). Still...he stays real and that's what I really want to see in a musician. He gave half of his Grammy to Alicia Keys. He doens't sing for the fame but for the music. In 10 years he's a legend.

I'd say it's just different. It's less groovy and rather calm. And "Heartbreak Warfare" isn't so good live. But it's pretty cool for a studio LP. And well I like "Room for Squares" and "Continuum" more but I really think "Battle Studies" is better than "Heavier Things". But anyway: JM is best live on stage anyway. ;)
