I'm ISTP down to a science. Ever since I can remember I've been the quit/shyish one in the family. Sometimes awkward, but I don't like meaningless small talk. I don't like attention. I don't care about superficial/unnecessary things. I hide my negative emotions well. I love being around my friends but in moderate doses, if I spend the night at theirs, I usually leave early because my energy gets drained. I need my alone time to ponder as well. I think the shoe fits.
i am an introvert, i'm very proud of who i am, but at time's it's a little depressing to feel different from everyone, and as much as i explain to the people who don't get it, they still don't get it. TV hosts like Matt Lauer, Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Matt Lauer, etc. are introverts as well. They're best at doing one-on-one interviews and that's how they channel their energy. @bordertown Well I guess then each introvert is different then. Kind of like politics. You've got the extremes on both ends, and you've got the moderates who are closer to the middle of the Left-Right Paradigm.
I see myself as an Introvert on the extreme end. being around family and few good friends I can deal with. However doing any official extrovert activities that require GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS, i can't do. Like talking in front of a crowd as a everyday job, or being a performer.
True, you must be on the extreme. I consider myself a fairly decent group speaker. I can also perform and play music in front of audiences and have fun doing it. Thing is I can't do it for long and certainly not on a daily basis. After playing a song or two in front of people or giving a presentation of some sort (even if I enjoyed doing it and the audience loved it) I feel like getting the hell out of there and not showing my face for a month.
Wow, it's quite hard for me being an introvert. I am the artistic, creative type of introvert but people like girls at school don't like me for the most stupid reasons. And one is for being quiet and never talking. I really like staying with my family and sometimes being with my friends at sleep overs is kinda boring for me because I don't know what to say. I keep on taking risks and try to join in with conversations, but people just look at me like I'm stupid or something after I've said it.
I work with someone who is an introvert to the T, and even though I happen to think she's very intelligent, she can be rude or snobby. I wish she would do a better job of explaining her introversion, but she is so eager to get back to her "spaceship" that she doesn't seem to care that she comes off this way. Not asking for her to change but in a work environment you can't just be like, fuck you I am who I am. Compromise some and help us understand you, but give a little back too...
@u2good2b4gotn A lot of times, us introverts can come off as rude and arrogant/snobby. But that's not the fact since invtroversion is part of a persons' personality. It is what it is, some introverts can be a bit more extroverted than others. However, the fact remains it is a part of someones personality so... nothing can really be done about it. For example I'm an INTJ... so I'm pretty introverted but I've learned to deal with formal interactions.
Good video. For the last year and a bit after highschool i've been wondering what is going on with me. I avoid big social events, haven't really contacted anyone I knew in school. If I do hang out with someone usually I feel exhausted and sometimes upset, I enjoy short visits though. I fell quite happy just listening to music, drawing and spending time with my family and cats. I still need to find friends with similar personalities though.
I applied for a job at Macys and Nordstrom, and they both give personality tests designed to SPECIFICALLY weed out the introvert!. Im able to beat the test because i know what theyre doing, but still, you'd think they would want to weed out some ex-cons, child molesters, undercover terrorist...but noo, they want to get those strange "introverts" before we can even make it to the interview lol
I don't feel this video explains the difference between shyness and introversion. Why don't introverts like to spend time with others? What other reason could there be other tham shyness?
@jakegamesnake Shyness is when a person wants to be social but is unable to. Introversion describes a type of person who is stressed/drained by being around others for too long and is most comfortable by themselves in introspection. The two are very different. And the belief that introverts don't like to spend time with others is a myth. Introverts enjoy the company of others, but in smaller amounts (generally not large parties) and dislike small talk.
@jakegamesnake People who are shy want to be with others, but don't know how to. Introverts (like me) prefer to spend time alone, doing things they are interested in. And introverts typically don't care for meaningless bullshit and drama that other people cause. But of course there's always the misconception that because we're introverted, we're automatically a shy, quiet psychopath.
@jakegamesnake introverts dont always feel the need to talk to people by choice. and this is they way were wired. shy people want to talk to people but are scared or dont know how to go about it. im inbtrovert but im not shy i have no prblem talking to people once in a while and i have ni problems giving presentations
Is it possible to be half introverted? I love to be with my freinds but if it's people I don't know well I try to skip off. I could also spend almost the whole 6 week summer holiday on my own (my parents where there but, meh) but I would prefer the internet :3
(the music is a bit distracing, but that might be another artisty thing ^^)
Anyway what do you think about facebooks introversion and extroversion? Do have real extrovert people more friends (contacts) than introverted people? I think there is some corelation in real life too, but FB is just FB...The questionn is...how is introvertism or extrovertism expressed on internet?
@TrollyMcTrollerson92 Categorizing is how we (humans) understand our world, EVERY THING is categorized. It's a sliding scale with "extreme" introverts on one end and "extreme" extroverts on the other, you don't always have to be on the extreme end...it's actually a measure of how much energy you carry with you...introverts carry their own energy therefore they don't require much outside stimuli, extroverts are always losing energy and must interact to replace it. This is Science, Not Opinion.
Im an introvert and I am studying to be a psychologist. People look at me weirdly when I tell them, because they think to be a psychologist you have to be confident to ask questions, but they don't understand that I AM confident, I just like my own company alot of the time and have been that way since I was a little girl.
Tell me about it man...I went to a friends house, and when it was silent a bit...my friend asked me "What's wrong with you? You look uncomfortable" -_- ::SIGH::
Now I understand, I'm the only introvert in my family, so yes I always get commented by my siblings on why I don't go out much, mostly by my mother, it gets annoying being constantly looked as a shut in. I don't think I'm a shut in I just tend to take precautions more and I tend to think before I do all the time. I enjoy being alone thinking about ideologies, emotions, and just playing music.
@MegaHayhayhayhay Everyone is all 8 of them, extroverts and introverts alike. It's just which one you show more traits of. Such as I am mainly INFP but am ISTJ a lot too. I also show extroverted traits but not as often; I show them around people I'm comfortable and confident around. But because I am mainly introverted and show more INFP I fit into the INFP catogory.
im 20 just found this out and im no longer depressed or suicidal and i dont hate myself any more... my family has made me feel like a outcast cause thay cant understand me cause i gotta diffrent way of thinking so cause of there lack of understanding thay cast me out as shy mean rude spoiled and stupid.. but as soon as i found out i have been a introvert forever the confusion has been lifted a confusion that i could never figure out. and it's so weird not hateing everone + myself and knowing
You know what makes it really hard to follow a video that's all words? A song with tons and tons of words in it. (That don't rhyme or have any kind of rhythm and are thus impossible to tune out.)
Lol I'm an introvert! It's weird that there are so many more extroverts than introverts. I was looking and thinking about how many people were introverts and how many extroverts in my class at school about 4 ish (including me) were introverts and about 29 were extroverts.
@Toxicslime1 there are just as many introverts in the world as extroverts. some introverts tend to force themselves to be extroverted. also, extroverts are naturally louder (duh) and draw more attention to themselves, which makes it seems as though they are the majority... especially in US culture.
do any other introverts think about or look at night clubs with people dancing and stuff, imagine themselves being in one and feel like topping themselves? lol I am thinking this right now and I'm at uni in 8 months it's terrifying how do I avoid all those people wanting to go to night clubs?!
@doitanywayz wait, im an introvert, and i love to dance at certain nightclubs, has nothing to do with the people. if i want to dance, i dance. it seems pretty natural.
The people that think you are weird and snobby are pretty damn ignorant. From one Introvert to another, your "weirdness" is your strength. Introversion can take you far. Accept it, and use it to your advantage. Introverts make their energy, you don't need to rely on people like extroverts. We introverts are societies great creators and thinkers. Who do you think Einstein was? An introvert. Like you and me, a man in his own head. How else did he come up with his theories?
I did the MBTI three times and always got different answers. After a while, I thought I could be another, a fourth type, today I saw two videos about the types and saw two more possibilities again.
Types are not existing, everyone is acting differently in different situations.
@Octobre1986 I think it's really possible to be somewhere between two types. A lot of people are ambiverts - not decidedly introverted or extroverted. You can also strike a balance between feeling & thinking. That may be why a person can get different results from a test that has to pigeonhole someone as either one or the other.
@prschuster Only one letter? I'm thinking of dimensions. Types are categories but every situation demands another sort of behaviour. Why only looking on introversion?
@Octobre1986 Why only looking for introversion? The Myers Briggs index defines 4 areas, introversion / extroversion being only one of these. Also, personality type is about orientation to the world - not behavior itself. If an introvert is being outgoing, that person doesn't become extroverted for the moment, because they are still processing information and getting their emotional energy from wihin. Outgoing is not extroverted and shy is not introverted.
@prschuster But you can be extroverted in family and amical issues while you keep distance to non-family members. On the other hand very direct and group orientated if you at your work place but still not outgoing with your colleagues. I think the whole concept is much more complex and therefore type views made too easy.
@Octobre1986 Again, I want tyo emphasize that being outgoing or shy have little to do with extroversion & introversion. An introvert can talk & socialize for hours with close friends that they have a deep bond with, but they're still being introverted because they're focusing on their inner thoughts & feelings when they do so. Extroverts are oriented toward the outside world and not on their inner thoughts. An extrovert can be very shy and still be extroverted. It's not about social behavior.
i think it is a great description of what introversion is, the initial description given is very accurate and many people appear confused about it.
however, it then goes on about introverts as loners, and don't think introverts are necessarily loners. in fact, i know extraverted loners, and i know introverted loners.
so in fact, even this video is a bit confused about it.
also, the discription of shy people may be less then accurate, and there was a description of unfriendly people
now as much as i agree with you brainless is a little harsh but i do agree we have the road towards success and always thought i was so miserable for such a long tim for trying to pretend i was outgoing and the fact that i live in my own head is a stregth not a weakness
i love to be alone on my laptop in complete darkness with only the laptop glaeing into my eyes. it is so nice for me....its like the world in my hands. lol i can speak to the world like i am now...i can search things, learn, and watch movies and youtbe vids....arrrrrr very niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Why is it in today's world that the goofy ass clown that thinks he or she is so funny...still gets recognition? Yea! We're talking a goofy ass loud mouth that tells the lamest jokes, acts retarded, and loves gossiping about other co-workers, yet he or she still gets recognized...WOW that just boggles my mind!! Yet when an introvert is thinking of wonderful ideas in his or her head...they get ridiculed, cut off from a clique, and people just stay away from them and treat them like dirt.
Dreamers, Defenders, craftsmen, etc... many of the attributes listed in these labels sound the same but with different language. I honestly don't see how a person can objectively label their self. I think of myself 7 years ago and now I see a different person in many respects. People are people, and I think most of them are usually in the middle ground of this whole extroversion/introversion/either/or thing. I've met very few people that I would call a definite Introvert.
this video has explained very well how I feel, I have no trouble talking to people, most think I'm an extrovert, while the truth is that I'm at my happiest when I'm on my own, but sometimes I feel guilty because of that and I think to myself, If I'm alone for enough time I might appreciate other people more and looking back at my life I see that the moments I have been most social has usually followed from periods of intense loneliness, I wish you could choose when you feel what...
I'm an introvert for a long time. I don't like to talk a lot, if i do it has to be something meaningful or funny. I hate those people that kept on opening their mouth talking nonsense, it gives me headache. Some mention earlier that casual friends/relationships doesn't last long, i agree. I do not like to be around too many people unless we playing sport which i love. I think i just like to listening to music, watching sunset on the beach, drink coffee or tea.
Ahhh the joys of being dragged to parties so I could "socialize more"... Society definitely doesn't reward introversion. The key though is to accept who you are and realize that it's okay to invent excuses and skip a friends gathering when you feel drained.
Omg! thts exactly how i feel. i feel like this is weird but being about ppl exhausts me and i got back from DC on a class trip for a week and i sleep for like 3 days
Girls are naturally attacted to extroverts I have found hence im single. Ive spent most of my life studying to be an engineer, so this video describes my personality perfectly
I started off as an Extrovert, I think, and then I started moving around, seeing a ton of other people, never keeping friends, and then when we moved from Europe for the fifth time, yeah, I just gave up and became Introverted. :/
I am certainly a "Dreamer" from this video. xD I'm an author, as well.
I'm a bit of a tricky introvert. While around people, I'm extremely outgoing and put forth a lot of energy. I'm constantly told how 'loud' and 'sociable' I am by others, which often leads to disastrous confrontation when they don't understand why I tend to avoid hanging out with them outside of school. It's not that I don't like them, it's that as soon as I get home, I shut down and don't want to go anywhere. I've pushed countless friends away by doing this. :/
@missAUDACITY I was the exact same way at school. Still am, but to a lesser extent. Friends certainly didn't understand why I wouldn't see them outside of school so I've certainly lost quite a number of friendships. But then I figure they aren't really worth my friendship if they aren't willing to understand and be cool with who I am without labeling me.
I am definitely a "Defender". Being an Introvert...I envy people who are talkative and wish I could be more like them. I'm always put down because I'm quiet and people judge me right away. I don't see ANYTHING good about being the way I am.
Damn...It's so sad that introverts are often overlooked and often misunderstood, and I'll give you an example. A talkative buffoon will get a promotion over a hard working introverted person that busts his or her own ass and puts 110%...A talkative buffoon and plays favorites in the workplace can get away with anything. It's really sad that our society doesn't value honest introverts.
god its such a confusing sick world the fact that if you are shy you find it hard to fit in and make friends but if your outgoing you make friends easier its just not fair at all
so, how does introverts act in love relations? i think the one i'm intrested in is a strategist introvert... how can life go on with a one way relation? is that possible or is it a tourture
@HybridD91 that will be of my great luck " if he doesn't want a relationship anytime soon" cause he is very confused .... doesn't know wat he wants & sending me mixed signals ... wat a life :)
While its hard to slap labels on people because everyone is so different from one another, I would definatley consider myself along the lines of the confidant introvert as described in here.
I think I'm probably a mix of a defender and maybe an examiner.. I don't really like the idea of "labelling" myself that but it certainly seems to coincide with how I feel
This was an excellent video, I'm a mixture of craftsman, artist, strategist, confidant and dreamer. Yea and I agree with most people, I have been called unsocial plenty of times, and asked why am I always in the house, its because I like to be.
Just like some people diagnosed me to have an autistic spectrum syndrome, or ADD, i am sceptic, not a term or name nor discription can place all souls into one name or discription, i see it as personal character, you cant make up 7 billion catagory's, becouse every person is different.
Still its good to recognise some parts of your personal character, just like i did when i heard about introverts and extroverts.
I hated how much the people around me constantly nagged how "un-social" I was. My parents always said "Why are you always inside? Why don't you talk to strangers at school?."
I never knew the answer until recently, and it has made me much happier knowing who I really am.
Examiner: Honesty and integrity is the UTMOST important thing for me in a person. And that transits into loyality and being dependable. I am very adventurous though. Craftsman: I am not unemotional, but I'm "cold" and cynical I hate whining. We do not have the RIGHT to complain about anything. (Example) The fact that we have the abilty to be on youtube is a privilege other people do not have that. So I don't care much for people crying about relationships etc.
I'm also very interested in intellectual "stuff" not only the 'pursuits' so to speak.
I also have Defender: I'm very modest. Obviously compliments are nice, but I try to avoid them, I "can't" really respond to them, I feel awkward.
My memory is insane if I say myself. It is kind of "emotionally selective" though, I can remember things from me being a 6 year old kid, to the most detail. If the other boy had a pimple or not.
do they usually or not get married?

What other reason could there be other tham shyness?
jakegamesnake 5 months ago
@jakegamesnake Shyness is when a person wants to be social but is unable to. Introversion describes a type of person who is stressed/drained by being around others for too long and is most comfortable by themselves in introspection. The two are very different. And the belief that introverts don't like to spend time with others is a myth. Introverts enjoy the company of others, but in smaller amounts (generally not large parties) and dislike small talk.
fkkkkkenig 5 months ago
@jakegamesnake People who are shy want to be with others, but don't know how to. Introverts (like me) prefer to spend time alone, doing things they are interested in. And introverts typically don't care for meaningless bullshit and drama that other people cause. But of course there's always the misconception that because we're introverted, we're automatically a shy, quiet psychopath.
pokerguy94 4 months ago
@jakegamesnake introverts dont always feel the need to talk to people by choice. and this is they way were wired. shy people want to talk to people but are scared or dont know how to go about it. im inbtrovert but im not shy i have no prblem talking to people once in a while and i have ni problems giving presentations

I don't think I'm a shut in I just tend to take precautions more and I tend to think before I do all the time. I enjoy being alone thinking about ideologies, emotions, and just playing music.

Toxicslime1 1 year ago
@Toxicslime1 lol rite??? In my class there is about 7 introverts(including me) and like 20 extroverts
zombiekidcrazy 11 months ago
@Toxicslime1 there are just as many introverts in the world as extroverts. some introverts tend to force themselves to be extroverted. also, extroverts are naturally louder (duh) and draw more attention to themselves, which makes it seems as though they are the majority... especially in US culture.

@BananaSandwich1

Octobre1986 1 year ago
@Octobre1986 I think it's really possible to be somewhere between two types. A lot of people are ambiverts - not decidedly introverted or extroverted. You can also strike a balance between feeling & thinking. That may be why a person can get different results from a test that has to pigeonhole someone as either one or the other.
prschuster 1 year ago
@prschuster Only one letter? I'm thinking of dimensions. Types are categories but every situation demands another sort of behaviour. Why only looking on introversion?
Octobre1986 1 year ago
@Octobre1986 Why only looking for introversion? The Myers Briggs index defines 4 areas, introversion / extroversion being only one of these. Also, personality type is about orientation to the world - not behavior itself. If an introvert is being outgoing, that person doesn't become extroverted for the moment, because they are still processing information and getting their emotional energy from wihin. Outgoing is not extroverted and shy is not introverted.
prschuster 1 year ago
@prschuster But you can be extroverted in family and amical issues while you keep distance to non-family members. On the other hand very direct and group orientated if you at your work place but still not outgoing with your colleagues. I think the whole concept is much more complex and therefore type views made too easy.
Octobre1986 1 year ago

MultiJAR121 1 year ago
I'm a bit of a tricky introvert. While around people, I'm extremely outgoing and put forth a lot of energy. I'm constantly told how 'loud' and 'sociable' I am by others, which often leads to disastrous confrontation when they don't understand why I tend to avoid hanging out with them outside of school. It's not that I don't like them, it's that as soon as I get home, I shut down and don't want to go anywhere. I've pushed countless friends away by doing this. :/
missAUDACITY 1 year ago
@missAUDACITY I was the exact same way at school. Still am, but to a lesser extent. Friends certainly didn't understand why I wouldn't see them outside of school so I've certainly lost quite a number of friendships. But then I figure they aren't really worth my friendship if they aren't willing to understand and be cool with who I am without labeling me.

A talkative buffoon will get a promotion over a hard working introverted person that busts his or her own ass and puts 110%...A talkative buffoon and plays favorites in the workplace can get away with anything. I'm a mix between most of them.
So I don't care much for people crying about relationships etc.
pinglauwa 2 years ago
I'm also very interested in intellectual "stuff" not only the 'pursuits' so to speak.
I also have Defender: I'm very modest. Obviously compliments are nice, but I try to avoid them, I "can't" really respond to them, I feel awkward.
My memory is insane if I say myself. It is kind of "emotionally selective" though, I can remember things from me being a 6 year old kid, to the most detail. If the other boy had a pimple or not.
