I wish they would use the origional high altar in the round, like they did for the first time in 40 years last year right around penticost, it was a full pontifical high mass with all kinds of people, they had a bishop from somewhere west be the celebrant, and had about 20 or so attendant priests and all kinds of servers, many choirs including some with school kids and all the major tridentine mass societys helping out.
I once served as Sub-Deacon for the Byzantine Hierarchical Divine Liturgy with the Roumanian Greek Catholic Bishop of the U.S. in this basilica. It was one of the first times that Greek Catholics and Greek Orthodox were graciously given access to the upper church for liturgy. It was one of my lifes treasured moments.
The Basilica is the one place in Washington DC where I always stop when I am there. It is an awe-inspiring building and my most poignant memory was to be there for Mass on the Saturday afternoon that Pope John Paul II passed away - it was the most stirring Mass that I have ever attended. Sad in one way but joyous in knowing that his work on earth had ended and that he was at peace with our Father.
It is a neat place, went there in 02 a day after the six month anniversery of sep 11 01.
This is the church for all the catholics of american and its diversity of people with the versions of the blessed Mother they bring with their culture.
Did you know that Arch Bishop John Frances Knoll from Fort Wayne helped get the shrine finished, and he founded our sunday visitor publication, He was the bishop back then in the area where I live. The city of Churches Fort Wayne.
I remember going to the Immaculate Conception (the church, not the event) in eighth grade.
I was just so "intimidated" by the artistry of the murals and all the grottoes. The one behind the altar of the Last Judgement really makes you feel insignificant, and one of my favorites.
Thank you for posting this video, and I hope you are able to post at least one or two more of it as well.

Actually, the hymn is, "The Day of Resurrection." But they used the same tune.

The recessional hymn is called "The Day of Resurrection." It's a traditional Anglican Paschal hymn.
