'67 is the year he and Sandra Dee divorced. Do you think he knew what he was singing about? I just love these old school performers who were less concious about technique, but completely focused on the message in the song. That's what I want to hear, and that's what I miss today. And that's why performers like Darin do live on. There product isn't artifact, it is art... timeless.

@lkl8 Today, Darin's heart condition would easily be treated with a valve replacement. Correct me if I'm wrong but he sustained valve damage after a case of childhood rhuematic fever. I loved his treatment of this beautiful song. Tony Bennett's also. I'll have to catch John Gary's too. Finally, Ray Bolger does a sweet rendition, almost in talking style, on the cast album of All American, a 1962 musical.

Just the premier version of this song. His phrasing and emotion torture the listener with how good and far reaching the performance is. Go and acquire it. Play it on a state of the art vinyl setup and weep to the poignancy of it. I almost have to every time I listen to it.

Got the album (Is he gonna make it?) - Brilliant. You can hear the bit where he's messing with the mike on the record - very toppy sound - as if it's a cheap mike or something! - very strange for a TV show. The last of the great entertainers.
