  • (saudades) pure nostalgia ... looks like the great Duran Duran of the early 80's,New Wave style is eternal.

  • Is it just me or does the existence of this music video detract from the meaning of the song? I mean, this is a very famous song, and the fact that they are so and have a music video that has no doubt been seen by all it's fans would sort of make their message a little hypocritical. Or maybe it actually intensifies it... the fact that the video DOES Make it famous... What do you think?

  • you are talking though a hole in your arse it is a music vid made to make money and that is all there is to it.

  • Heh, you're probably right. I have a habit of over-analysing things! Though who knows, some music videos were made for interpretation...

  • 1:53 - 1:56 stoned girl hahaha

  • Hahahaha! Now the internet is killing MTV!

  • mtv sucks anyway. youtube is a billion times better

  • I might be wrong but wasn't this ironically the first video shown on MTV?

  • I heard they scheduled it like that on purpose.

  • the begining was my favorite part :3

  • a great song from when I was aged 10. Trevor Horn knew how to make records sound good.

1979 had a bunch of hits that have stood up well 30 years on. This is a classic.

  • goood times :] classic :O

  • No it's not.... I don't know who told you that, but they lied to you.

  • The once wonderfull MTV. R.I.P. MTV.

  • i still love this

  • But what was the 2nd song ever aired on MTV?? martha quinn remembers.

  • my dad said, when he was in hospital, when he was younger getting an operation when he was four in his ear, this song was on.

  • He was four in his ear? Miss placed modifier for the lose.

  • I said WHEN

  • :D, When my dad was four, he was in the hospital getting an operation in his ear, and this song was on. There you go, although it may be a run on now. Sorry I'm not usually a grammar nazi but I am really bored.

  • Freakin brilliant!

  • cazzooooo!!!!

  • great!

  • yea was on flash fm, i think lol

  • I remember this from GTA Vice City lol

  • me too :D

  • This song is a true classic

  • Wow, what a witty commentary, you're a GENIUS...BRILLIANT!!!

  • It just seems so wrong that they've got a video for this song.

  • ahahaha!!

  • Geoff Downs is the keyboard player,he was also in Asia

  • modern music videos wish they could be this alternative ad freaking AWESOME!!!

  • Hans Zimmer is on the Keyboard! The guy who does music for fimls like Gladiator and many others.

  • ive heard of him b4 from somewhere else is he on other bands?

  • The band members and the sets look like they came straight out of a Buck Rogers episode. LOL

  • Ironicly this was the first song on MTV

  • At 1.24 it is wonderfully camp LOL

  • Videos became very popular in making music so people would in greater numbers watch TV. Less viewers to the radio stars of pop music thus, 'Video Killed the Radio Star'!

  • i think it means like t.v has pretty much killed of radio cuz were intrested in t.v and not radia anymore.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!

    I love this song!!

    And its so true!

  • Excellent - fanx 4 posting ;)

  • Such a great video!!! And too bad they left off the famous and fabulous false ending :(

  • GREAT SPECIAL EFECTS

  • awesome...

  • Agreed Halpin

  • I had a day dream once. A little girl and her father were watching my life on a television set.

she asked him, daddy, is it over yet? [my life]

no, hunny, not for a long time, he replied.

    i was 4 or so.

  • Thats probably the most brilliant comment I've ever seen!Kudos.Brilliant.

  • Great song!!!!!!

  • this song is awesome

  • this video is weird but i love the song

at 3:07 the dude looks weird

  • Yes, this was the very first video MTV showed when the channel debuted in 1981! It was to signify the change the music world was now entering into.

And how true this was. Bands like Chicago and The Isley Bros were great over the radio, but not handsome enough for on-camera videos. It forced musicians and DJs to become more glamorous in appearance to reach a larger audience

  • Oh my god, thank you! I finally get it now. I thought it was just saying how video was the new wave or something. Thanks bro.

  • You know, here's a perfect example!

Britney Spears would be absolutely nothing without MTV. She owes all her fame to her sexy videos and rock-hard tummy. If her songs were radio-only, her albums wouldn't even go gold!

  • first music video ever played on MTV...DID U KNOW THAT ?

  • great vid and song but you know whats ironic? THIS IS A VIDEO LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so basically they are killing the radio

  • it's true video did kill the radio star.

    p.s. VCR lol

  • YOUTUBE KILLED THE mtv Reality Stars

  • when MTV was genuine 100% PURE MUSIC

  • greenday fucking sucks their punk-wannabes same with most of the 90s punk bands

  • one of the best songs i've ever heard. actually, very sad.... haven't heard it since the days of Scott Muney, and just chanced on it tonight. memories on full blast; i'm almost in tears. anyone over 50 will get it. someday you will be 50 too, and you will still feel like a kid, but you won't be able to act like one any more. then you'll know what i mean. bravo buggles, wherever you are now.

  • Truly a classic video. Historical too, in that VCRs came into existence around 1979. Kicked off MTV's '80s music video explosion.

  • Like he says in the song ...

"Pictures came and broke your heart /

Put all the blame on VCRs!"

  • its actually VTR .... belive it or not

  • Right. Until 1982, they were called VTRs because the 1" tapes were so huge! When Sony released the Betamax, the smaller tapes were like casettes, hence the new nickname VCR.

And nowadays, young people don't even know what a VCR is. Now they want to spend $500 for a DVD-recorder!

  • X Factor killed everything. Zzzzzz.

  • Crappy reality shows killed the Video Star.

  • im only 14..and i hate rap and anything from todays genre....good ol greenday like early 90's...and my dad was asking me if i ever heard this song before...and that it was the first Music video ever...Im glad i watched this, its awesome

  • Im just like you ryanryan1510 im 18 now but i found out i LOVED 80's 90's music when i was 15 and since then thats what i love listening to, i hate rap ect also

a lot of kids these days do not know what good music there missing out on

  • yea there missing out on songs that actually mean something.....not just rhymes that mean nothing to the artist and his/her band....rap is like people just talking the whole time...and some bass

  • i agree so much!!

im 14 too and my taste in music means im not friends with the 'popular' people!

but who gives a fuck! least i actually like what i listen to. green day are my favourite band

  • Greed day is so mainstream it's not even funny.

  • Haha greenday? That's totally today's genre. Get it right.

  • they're mainstream now but 15 years ago they wernt..

i also never said i didnt like today.. i said my music makes me different from the popular gang..

just cause green day are my favourite and are goin mainstream dosent mean i don't like old bands..

  • dude......how about you get it right...i said good old greenday...THE EARLY 90's...Deffinantly not todays genre....the new album by greenday is kind of like the older songs....Go up to any person that thinks they are a greenday fan, and ask what their favorite song is....they'll probably say 21 guns or holiday...but thats mainstream greenday...Good greenday is the old stuff

  • amen to that

  • Oh a oh. Green day sucks

  • This brings back memories...corwded in front of the TV in PIttsburgh to watch this "new music video station" calld MTV. I'm priveliged to be able to say I saw MTV sprout from the ground! Watched the station exclusively for about 2 days after that.

  • go on mtv aqnd this is on rite nooooooooooooooow this it koooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool! love it

  • The first time I saw this, I thought the radio at the beginning was a tumble dryer....

  • wow this song was in the 70s i thought it was the 80s

  • Internet killed the video star :D

  • Oh the oldies.

    Nothin' beats 'em.

  • Super

  • excelent song. no more to say.

  • Awesome! Gotta love these old New Wave classics. Beats most of what passes for music now.

  • Glad you posted this, my copy on my first VHS recorder, a Panasonic PV1210, has downgraded so bad it's worthless.

  • I love this song. The first version I ever heard was by The Presidents of the United States of America. I like their version a lot, too, but nothing beats the original.

  • Apparently the first video on MTV, but far from the first music video. If you want to see a really old "music video" (before they coined the term) search for:

    sm001 crying for the carolines

And for a "re-written by machine and new technology" version of this song, search for:

video killed the radio star luka

  • the song itself is fun to listen to, the video is pretty amazing for the time it's been made.. but simply put, the whole concept is100% pure genius

  • I love it

  • this video ist so funny!^.^

and this song is soo great!

    ♥ LOVE♥

  • awesome voice

  • hardstyle babeh'

  • this guy is a legend! i always liked his glasses : D too bad that lady gaga whatever her name is stole the idea : (

  • @EnclaveSupporter: She may've got the idea from Elton John ^-^

  • i would be cool if mtv would simply rerun it's eighties programming non-stop from this song on . . . heck . . . i'd probably watch as religiously as i did back then . . .

  • Isn't this the first video played on MTV?

  • Yep, legend in itself

  • young enough to rember yes ironic ain't it

  • Great SONG! love it

  • great song.great times too

  • Comment removed

  • absolute classic

  • I wish MTV would go back to what Warner-Amex Cable intended it to be. 24 hours of music videos.

  • what the fuck... so cool :D

  • hans zimmer is the one at 3.00

he's the one playing the piano in the background, in the video.

a young guy at that time.

  • buen tema !!!!

  • Fuck this was the era when people could do their own thing... now a days people just re hash old music styles into new bands.... its like the industry is stuck at this point and cant progress

  • Comment removed

  • A-men brother or sister lol

  • el inicio de los 80 gran tema

  • I would have been claustrophobic in that tube!!!

  • Does any know that one of the Keyboardists is Hans Zimmer?

  • 70-80s best years, drugs alcohol, girls, partying. Life was great!

  • When Trevor sings, We can't rewind we've gone too far, It makes me realize that MTV will never be the same as it once was.

  • Rofl this song is on DDR super nova

  • Actually, it did air in 1979 in the US on "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", a late night TV staple of the 70s. Many videos did, but at a rate of one or two a month. The big fame came when it kicked off MTV in the early 80s, and as said before, fulfilled its own prophecy!

  • This was the first video on MTV....BUT !...music videos had been around a long time...the Beatles had many music videos out during the 60's

  • Je la chantais avec mon groupe.."Los Chicos", à Lyon, en..Juin 1980.....!!

  • Why does it say 1979? This video aired in 1981! It was the first video ever aired on MTV.

  • it was created 1979...

  • The song may have been written in 1979, but it did not air, as I said, until 1981. When they finally first aired the video, it was the fulfillment of a prophesy. This song was the prophesy.

  • It must have aired in England before it was shown in America. Anyway, MTV wasnb't the first channel to show music videos in the US. HBO aired a couple in 1979 and 1980.

  • You're right Gabe. I watched it.

  • Wow! this is timeless. Thanks for bringing up the good memories :)

  • put the blame on VCR lol

    now look at us :P

  • Vince Clarke from Erasure thinks this is the best popsong ever written! It is without a doubt, one of the very best one-hit-wonders!

  • The Buggles - Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes - jouined Yes for one album, than Downes and Steve Howe formed Asia. Go figure. :-D

  • love it even if its old

  • Old?? Come on, it isn't THAT old ! If it were to be old, then that would make ME old. I remember when it was a brand new song... lol :-)

  • If Wall-E was human, he would lo0k EXACTLY like Trevor Horn! XD And this song would make a fantastic Wall-E AMV.

I appologize if I already mentioned that on here. There are many fans of the Buggle and of this song in particular on YouTube, so it's only natural that I must mention multiple times the fact that this song would make a wonderous Wall-E AMV. XD

  • Back when MTV focussed on Music Videos instead of classless drunks

  • I DONT GET THIS VID, ITS SO RANDOM

  • I love 80's,it's so great when i hear almost all of the 80' song!Simply they are evergreen.

  • Gotta love the 70's music. You can keep your Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Eminem, just give me something from the 70's-'80s

  • The height of television watching was the 80's. I mean look how many good shows were in the 80's. Since then, the viewing audience has steadily declined. Nah, just kidding, but yeah it's not as good as it once was hehe.

  • this was the first song on mtv

  • great video!!! thanls for posting it!!!

  • Isn't it funny how MTV killed the video star?

  • and youtube killed MTV star

  • i love this song ! i remember when i use to sit and watch mtv all day to see all those cool video's ! mtv sucks now ! i dont know why they even call it mtv anymore? they never show videos ! they should change it to SATV, SUCKS ASS TELEVISION !!! long live the 80's ! peace !

  • I know what you mean. I lived for MuchMusic as a kid and now its a BAD ripoff of MTV. BUT....I heard a rumor that Friday Night Videos might be coming back with only music video play, no shows.

  • hello all..

trevor horn is incredible..he went on to produce frankie goes to hollywood and then in the early 90s seal....as a bass player and a child at the time of this song i heard this bass he played and always wanted one..then duran duran's john taylor played one to great effect..even hair cut 100 played it..the name of the bass is ARIA SB 1000 in 2 weeks and after 27 years oif wanting this bass im finally getting it...they are very unique instruments..way ahead of thier time!

    Damian

  • Not to mention that he spent some time in the legendary prog band Yes and produced some of their later efforts, including 90125...one of thier bigger commercial successes. Trevor Horn is awesome.

  • HEY !!

I saw Hans Zimmer on the keyboard!!!

  • Yeh that is definetely him, he is my godfather :p

  • good vid when i was in highschool.......now that i'm older..........i'm going back to the radio!
