Is it just me or does the existence of this music video detract from the meaning of the song? I mean, this is a very famous song, and the fact that they are so and have a music video that has no doubt been seen by all it's fans would sort of make their message a little hypocritical. Or maybe it actually intensifies it... the fact that the video DOES Make it famous... What do you think?
:D, When my dad was four, he was in the hospital getting an operation in his ear, and this song was on. There you go, although it may be a run on now. Sorry I'm not usually a grammar nazi but I am really bored.
Videos became very popular in making music so people would in greater numbers watch TV. Less viewers to the radio stars of pop music thus, 'Video Killed the Radio Star'!
Yes, this was the very first video MTV showed when the channel debuted in 1981! It was to signify the change the music world was now entering into.
And how true this was. Bands like Chicago and The Isley Bros were great over the radio, but not handsome enough for on-camera videos. It forced musicians and DJs to become more glamorous in appearance to reach a larger audience
Britney Spears would be absolutely nothing without MTV. She owes all her fame to her sexy videos and rock-hard tummy. If her songs were radio-only, her albums wouldn't even go gold!
one of the best songs i've ever heard. actually, very sad.... haven't heard it since the days of Scott Muney, and just chanced on it tonight. memories on full blast; i'm almost in tears. anyone over 50 will get it. someday you will be 50 too, and you will still feel like a kid, but you won't be able to act like one any more. then you'll know what i mean. bravo buggles, wherever you are now.
Right. Until 1982, they were called VTRs because the 1" tapes were so huge! When Sony released the Betamax, the smaller tapes were like casettes, hence the new nickname VCR.
And nowadays, young people don't even know what a VCR is. Now they want to spend $500 for a DVD-recorder!
im only 14..and i hate rap and anything from todays genre....good ol greenday like early 90's...and my dad was asking me if i ever heard this song before...and that it was the first Music video ever...Im glad i watched this, its awesome
Im just like you ryanryan1510 im 18 now but i found out i LOVED 80's 90's music when i was 15 and since then thats what i love listening to, i hate rap ect also
a lot of kids these days do not know what good music there missing out on
yea there missing out on songs that actually mean something.....not just rhymes that mean nothing to the artist and his/her band....rap is like people just talking the whole time...and some bass
dude......how about you get it right...i said good old greenday...THE EARLY 90's...Deffinantly not todays genre....the new album by greenday is kind of like the older songs....Go up to any person that thinks they are a greenday fan, and ask what their favorite song is....they'll probably say 21 guns or holiday...but thats mainstream greenday...Good greenday is the old stuff
This brings back memories...corwded in front of the TV in PIttsburgh to watch this "new music video station" calld MTV. I'm priveliged to be able to say I saw MTV sprout from the ground! Watched the station exclusively for about 2 days after that.
I love this song. The first version I ever heard was by The Presidents of the United States of America. I like their version a lot, too, but nothing beats the original.
Apparently the first video on MTV, but far from the first music video. If you want to see a really old "music video" (before they coined the term) search for:
sm001 crying for the carolines
And for a "re-written by machine and new technology" version of this song, search for:
i would be cool if mtv would simply rerun it's eighties programming non-stop from this song on . . . heck . . . i'd probably watch as religiously as i did back then . . .
Fuck this was the era when people could do their own thing... now a days people just re hash old music styles into new bands.... its like the industry is stuck at this point and cant progress
Actually, it did air in 1979 in the US on "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", a late night TV staple of the 70s. Many videos did, but at a rate of one or two a month. The big fame came when it kicked off MTV in the early 80s, and as said before, fulfilled its own prophecy!
The song may have been written in 1979, but it did not air, as I said, until 1981. When they finally first aired the video, it was the fulfillment of a prophesy. This song was the prophesy.
It must have aired in England before it was shown in America. Anyway, MTV wasnb't the first channel to show music videos in the US. HBO aired a couple in 1979 and 1980.
