Jazz musicians steal material all of the time whether it is a melodic pattern or phrase, chord progression, chord substitution, rhythmic pattern, etc. This song is Fucking Gay anyway. Feel lucky a contemporary musician of a completely different genre found something of value in your music.
Vic gave me a copy of his latest album for free. He's a really nice guy and he deserves credit for his stuff. I saw him at the Rutgers Summer Jazz Camp at Mason Gross; he teaches there.
I had the chance to meet Vic Juris the other night when he was playing in a small intimate venue. Great guy and great guitar. Even played this track at my request. As both a rap and jazz fan it's obviously a good debate this whole thing. In the end however all of this "art" is still business and Vic is due payment. The idea of sampling for free died a long time ago.
this the kind of music you hear when someone puts you on hold. old white people like vic juris generally hate hip-hop and will find any way to criticize it. they can't be persuaded because they've made their minds up. quite sad really.
@willferris34 First off, you are a racist, probably a no-talent racist. Second, you would be pissed too if someone lifted your track and made money off of it without asking permission or giving out a few dimes of royalties, not that you would ever be capable of doing anything other than dishing it out to "old white people". I don't even know where you get the "hate hip-hop"...he just wants credit. Racist.
@FunkEnRegalia I'm white myself, and regardless I'm not a racist. In order for an artist to sample someone else's work, they have to get permission or pay for the rights to use it. If Juris didn't get paid or even approve of the sample use, then he has every right to be mad. Even so, sample clearance is not in the hands of the artists, there are lawyers and A&R's who take care of that stuff. Sampling is the foundation of hip hop, and to call it stealing is such a tired argument at this point..
@FunkEnRegalia I'm white myself & I'm not a racist. I never claimed to be musically talented or otherwise, so that insult has no bearing here. DJ Premier took 3 seconds of this song that was otherwise lost in the other 6-plus minutes & made it into something new & ultimately far more important than the work of Vic Juris. Premier has nothing to do with sample clearance issues, that is for lawyers to sort out. If Vic wasn't paid, he should be angry at Gang Starr's management, & not the artists .
Too bad Juris has to be such a dick though. I'm just not going to return and enjoy his wonderful music because his ego and bank account figure into his life more than enjoying his own art does.
@stevenjazzguitar Juris has played with Joe Pass, Peter Bernstein, Joe Locke...the list goes on and on and on. Maybe you don't like smooth jazz, but he can play everything else...What have you played, Steven? A coffee shop? Maybe even a yuppie winebar? Man, if you're lucky and keep practicing, they might play your music in a service elevator.
@FunkEnRegalia Just because you play with big names doesn't mean you're good. I'm 17 and I've played with Wycliffe Gordon, Roy Hargrove, Joel VanderHayden and Fareed Haque, but I don't consider myself good by any means. I like smooth jazz too, so there's that. As for where I've played, you're right, but like I said, I'm 17 and there isn't much more I can do. His comment was incredibly brash though. You can't deny that.
@Vicjury if the sample cleared, why are you complaining? If you didn't get paid off the clearance, that has nothing to do with the artist that sampled your work. You should already know to go to the clearinghouse and get your paper. I'd be willing to bet that you made more off Primo's 2 sec. sample than you did with this song, which BTW I love. Maybe that's why you're bitter. Too bad, because if I were you I would find Primo and do a song with him. I know he would be game.
Takin 2 seconds of a joint, and sampling just one instrument and filtering or panning out the rest and making a whole other thing of it is even harder to do then playing freely on an instrument.
Premier does it well, creative and probably has the best ear for dope parts.
@DrMBA28 im going to have to say ditto this....i woulda never heard of this guy....or got this song on my ipod....great guitar playing...cant accept a producer taking 2 seconds of sound from a 7 minute long song is just stingy
@incrediblecHiller Hmm, still up I see :) The fact is Vic doesn't want this taken down because he's probably gotten alot of publicity (and gigs) thanks to DJ Premier's sample. Maybe you should be paying Premo eh vic?
@karey26 Vic is just pissed because he didn't get paid for someone else taking his music and making money off of it, you'd be pissed too if you were him. Vic got no publicity out of this, and in the jazz world he was already an acclaimed educator and performer when Guru was shitting his diapers.
I love Guru and Primo, but Juris has every right to be pissed. It is stupid to posit that Primo actually HELPED a well-established jazz professional by stealing his music without proper dues. Idiot.
@Vicjury I assume that this is the real Vic Juris (or a representative). Let me ask you: when your work is sampled, do you appreciate the fact that it sort of propels you into the next generation of music listeners? Or would you rather your work not be sampled at all? Or is it a monetary issue? Namely, you wouldn't mind your work being sampled, but would like to be paid for it. Not meant to be rude or disrespectful, just an honest question.
@Vicjury so black people are thieves? white trash...the only good part of this song was at 3:34 when it was sampled by gang star and made it better than you
@Vicjury funny how u want you tube to take down,, without it noone would ever get to hear it anymore..and good music would be lost 4 ever..you should be happy that more people can enjoy it now....
and definetly should be honored your tune was sampled in another amazing song so it can carry on...
intead of just faintly heard in background in drs office, hotels, the waether channel, on hold...
@Vicjury You are a part of one of the best tracks in hip hop history. You should be happy with that. I'd be freaking THRILLED. What mark do you think your music would/could leave otherwise? Minimal, even though you are a skilled musician/writer.
Were I you, I'd be smiling. Forget money, It ruins everything.
You'd be freaking thrilled. That's you. Not everyone has to feel that way - and apparently Vic is one. His wishes should be respected.
What kind of question is that to ask an artist with the creativity, discipline, and soul of a musician on Vic's level? Perhaps he is less concerned with "what mark" he makes than with artistic integrity. If his "mark" is less than someone's who ripped him off, it might say more about marketing than about Vic's artistry. I'll take the original.
@RootsinBrooklyn Look at it this way, if only for a moment... I would not know anything about or be listening to your wonderful music right now if it weren't for the track-back research on that sample. One thing leads to another. I'd be likely to catch a show of yours or buy a CD now. Just sayin'. (the original is sweet, by the way!)
@Vicjury If it wasn't for these 'thieves' I would have never discovered your music...duh! Sampling gives newer generations a way of discovering the old...
I'd be willing to bet that if Juris heard "Mass Appeal" without knowing anything about it he would never have identified that sample as coming from his own track.
This is one of the most Sickest breakz...DJ Premier caught the correct segment of Vic's track and smashed it :-) hence the birth of Mass appeal! - This original break is also inspiring - Nice 1 Vic! :-)
Who the hell else would go all the way to the middle of an almost seven minute song and jack one bar? Who the hell else would have jacked THAT one bar? I said it before and I'll say it again, Preme is the best that ever did it.
@oskamadison - That's the art of crate-diggin my man. It takes mad patience and it's one task you have to honesty say that you never know what the person listening to it is thinking or feeling. You never know what or where Preme was at when his ear caught that little moment in time..blink and you would've missed it lol Prolly not like we doing now just sittin here listening for it -- he prolly was doing some other shit while this played and the sound just grabbed him you know?
@Seethroo You're exactly right on all counts. I'm washing the dishes listening to Wes Montgomery's "Road Song" album and what do I hear on Wes' cover of "Yesterday"? The guitar sample on the intro to Group Home's album. I always get a little giddy when I come across a sample that Preme used, convincing myself for approximately 2.3 seconds that I'm somehow on Preme's wavelength because I found a joint he sampled over 15 years ago, lmao.
@oskamadison LMAO! word up. I've been there on my instances back in the day when I use to raid my father's collection coming across familiar joints, but my pops was on some bashing shit most of the time cause every time we'd go at it from him shittin on hip-hop saying that its not music, he'd always go to his archives and backdoor the original of a classic hip-hop joint that I played for him and just leave me with my face cracked lol
And I can see from previous comments that I was not the only one without musical talent...or rather should we say that Premier is the one with supreme musical gifts!
Two things you guys should be aware of on Vic Juris's part:
1.) This is by far from his best work and he admits that. He called it a "not so great recording" and has produced MUCH more exciting work.
2.) He's actually really upset about this sample, mostly because he's not getting paid ANYTHING from it. Don't know who's fault that is but it's a shame and as a fan of both hip-hop and jazz, I feel really conflicted.
