  • 5:43 The two men kiss, that is probably normal in russia, but i freaking hate the Soviets, Go USA and Canada

  • @ 5:55 Bobby Orr speaks the truest words spoken in this series...."And tomorrow night it will be a little different story"!....Boy, Oh Boy, ...was it ever!

& btw, the NHL used Boris Salming, as well as Hedberg & Nielson,..I forgot.

Salming was one of the best in the world at that time, & the other 2 were not bad either.

The Russians @ that time were light years ahead till the 90's & then the others began to watch their warm ups & drills & now they are much closer 2 these great Russians gents.

  • The best game by both teams was Game 2 in my opinion. Game 1 was sloppy by CCCP. Game 3 was the crappiest by NHL. Game 2 had the best quality of both teams.

  • Hey everyone! If you love Soviet Hockey, then you have to check out: MAGICIANS ON ICE. It details the very beginnings of the great Soviet Hockey Dynasty. Iis a great read!

  • Geeezzz, the Russians scored beautiful goals!!!

  • at :40 whoever number 23 (russia) is, he has a vagina! awful backchecking :(

  • Dryden always sucked against the Russians in net.

  • Dryden except for the last game in '72 almost always played like a sib in goal against the Russians. He played like that against the Bruins in '77,'78,and '79 they would have killed him in every game.

  • Always wonderful to see the cheating canadians getting a good whipping!

I have never ever seen a larger bunch of cheaters and morons than the canadians...

  • Gallivan was awesome, id trade him for joe beninati any day

  • did the soviets win the rest of the series?

  • Yes the Soviets won the final game 6-0. Look at the final game video that I have.

  • @PLERKTA Yes, the last game was one by the USSR 6:0

  • The USSR teams of this era were the best hockey teams ever.

  • @AndyVintheD Exactly! We played better than Canada. Unfortunately, our school was ruined when the USA and Canada started buying our best players.

  • ha...was this Gallivan? Did he say "Holy Makarov" after that last goal? Funny...

  • Yes that is Gallivan and he did say "Holy Makarov".

  • Gallivan-Irvin is just about the best game-calling team imaginable. They were a perfect match for those Bowman Habs teams. This is a pure joy to listen to...as is the rampant MSG throng, ironically cheering on the Islander line, which was really the only thing Team NHL had going for it in the first two games of this series. It really was a series of two halves: NHL outscores USSR 8-4 through Robinson's goal; USSR takes the remainder 9-0. Ouch. Listen to the catcalling crowd as the game turns.

  • Great commentating.

  • One of Bowman's biggest career mistakes was replacing Dryden with Cheevers. Cheevers was not in the same league as Dryden as a goaltender. Despite his struggles in games one and four in 1972, Dryden won Game six for Canada and was huge in Game eight. Cheevers was nothing short of pathetic in Game 3 of the Challenge Cup. You win with your best and lose with your best. Bowman should have stuck with Dryden.

  • i was at game 3, the nhl team was going to lose no matter who played in goal the Russians played hockey the way it's SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED ! they were GREAT TO WATCH !

  • Dryden always sucked against the Russians in since 1972.

  • канада еще раз соснула

  • Danny Gallavan, best play by play man ever

  • Oh never mind, we already did the 8 game series in 72. If you want to compare Canada vs Russia, 160 million people to 30 million and look at the players and a full on series then we will determine who is the best. Of course, our Junior teams seem to have no problem with the USSR.

  • You mean Russia?

What do juniors have to do with this? Perhaps you should look at how the senior team is doing against Russia lately...

But this is really about team USSR against NHL in 79, not about now.

  • unnamed00

too bad you did not post final 3rd game of this Challenge

3rd game was total humiliations for NHL profy players against Russians

Guess you were scared watching 3rd game LOL

  • The final is the first video I posted from the series...

    watch?v=wNaQdT8ReBw

  • Of course. NHL puts together a team that is together for a week against Russians who are together for years. No one ever argued Russian hockey players were not skilled (professional just means they earn their living playing). If you want to see Prvda (Truth) set Canada team together vs Russia for 8 to 10 games.

  • This is not true. This Soviet team was not together for years. Some lines and defense pairings maybe were (same goes for team NHL), but not the whole team. Many players were new to the Soviet national team.

  • Yeah, okay. Split me a few more hairs: they were together more than the NHL team. Half the NHL team guys hated each other because of the Stanley Cup Rivalry. Case in point: 1984 Canada Cup was nearly a disaster because the team were divided. Only Glen Sather was able to pull them together.

  • Again the usual excuses...

They played together more, team Canada was divided, what else?

  • Excuses? Canada won that tournament. Just telling you the facts of what happened. Despite being divided they won in 84. When it comes to Senior Canada players vs USSR in those kinds of tournaments - who's won more?

  • In 84 they won an a lucky deflection goal in overtime. That is after losing 6-3.

It depends what games you count. Canada won a little more games vs the USSR in the Canada Cup, but that does not say much, especially with the way they got some of the wins.

  • oops now who is generating excuses. Lucky bounces, bad referring, etc. That's why the USSR lost more games to the Canadians in Canada Cup. Well, here's a morsel for you to chew on: USSR is a better cotnditioned athlete - we know that - I've seen the documentaries. But when Canada got it's legs in 72 they won the last 3 games straight. If there were a repeat of 72, Canada would win by a larger margin than then. If Orr, Gretzky and lemieux were on the same team it would be 8-0 Canada.

  • If you don't think it was a lucky bounce in 84, go look at the goal.

As far as biased refereeing in 87, I back that up in my other video.

And don't speculate on how Canada would have dominated, since whenever Canada was supposed to dominate, they failed to.

Winning 3 games in Moscow in 72 (all close games) is very different from winning in 87 or another year.

  • What else?

    '72,76,84,87,91,2004

;et's see Canada unior 5 straight golds, junior superseries..what was it 8-0 straight??

  • Who cares about juniors. Very irrelevant when talking about USSR vs Canada...

    "76, 84, 87, 91"

Well exactly, Canada was good at winning home tournaments.

  • @unnamed00 Grow up man USSR and Canada have 15 world junior each

  • @unnamed00

Canada Cup became such a joke when canadian refs were actually reffing the Canadian team playing that the whole idea of a tournament was abandoned.

There is no way Canada wins 1987 without Don Koharski.

  • @sergeontheloose YES I REMEBER 1987 CANADA CUP,SUCH A GREAT SERRIES BY BOTH TEAM,KLM AND YOUNG VALERY KAMENSKY WERE ON FIRE.YES CANADA WON MORE CANDADA CUP BUT ALL OF THEM WAS CLOSE AND BEING PLAYED IN CANADA HOME.FROM 1972-UNTILL 1991 USSR NATIONAL TEAM AND CLUB HAD 58 WINS AND ONLY 40 LOSES AGAINSTR BEST CANADIAN AND NHL TEAM

  • All i gotta say is the NHL team was lucky they got one game outta this series. They were over hyped by the NA media, and the Russians played a superior game.

  • ussr or russia we are best:D

  • Russia seems to have this weird hockey genius issue though. The players are either among the absolute best in the world (Ovie, Malkin, Datsyuk, etc.) or they aren't much to speak of at all. It's like they go for the all or nothing route.

  • no ones gonna comment on the dudes kissing at the end?

  • Cold War produced excellent competition between East and West. Too bad it was all about military domination... Do you remember the Soviet Union vs NHL Professionals - 8 game series in 1976 ? Four games played in USSR and four in the USA of that series ! A Classic ! Always good to see these clips. Thanks for the post !!

  • yeah more canadians

  • The goalies sucked

  • Tretiak sucked? Dryden sucked? YOU SUCK!

  • Just look at ussr's 4th goal...

  • Wow what a thrill to watch even in the year 2008. This was such a well played game by greats who loved the game more than money. Fine memories are here too. I wonder how well the USSR wouldve played Gretzky had he been in the NHL then.

  • Not really Tretiak's greatest game. Letting in 4 goals when facing only 16 shots. What?!!! I think after 2 periods he had made something like 5 saves. Luckily he got his act together in the 3rd. The Soviets really deserved this win; that's what the commentators, Scotty Bowman and Bobby Clarke all said (well, sort of).

  • Thats Dick Irvin & Bobby Orr. Clarke was playing, Orr with Dick Irvin Jr. the color men, Danny Galivan play by play.

  • I know that! I meant "the commentators AND Bobby Clarke AND Scotty Bowman all said that the Soviets deserved to win this game". I understand that Bowman can't be coaching & commentating and Clarke can't be playing & commentating at the same time. :D

  • @Cercopithecus47 Tretiak was replaced by Myshkin in the 3rd game.

  • Two great commands! Long live hockey!

  • too bad it took so long to get these guys in the NHL...every team drooled over getting a Tretiak or Kharlamov but due to racism/arrogance/stupidity, we as fans missed out on a lot of great what-could-have-been...

  • What are you talking about? It had nothing to do with racism.

  • I had Tretiak's book as a kid. Kharlamov was offered a million a year... if I remember right he joked he wouldn't come without Tretiak - so they said we'll pay him a million too! Tretiak wrote that they played for the USSR not for the money, but for the country.

  • maladec CCCP

  • Whe I was going to school in the 70's they would stop class and make us watch Canada Russia hockey. Great propaganda awesome hockey and those old russian names take me back.

  • There were the days, there were the days...

  • Great game,amazing comeback.Perfect Soviets team!

  • great game

  • I would have loved to have seen Orr - the greatest hockey player of all-time - against the Soviets. He would have been terrific in that kind of free-flowing hockey - and might have been the difference in this game.

  • He played against them in the 76 Canada Cup...He was the tournament MVP, on one leg...That's him doing the colour on this broadcast.

  • I remember this game very well .When NHL was ahead 4:3 suddenly we lost picture in our TV, there was some trouble with signal transmission to Europe.Next morning I got final result from radio.Great hockey. Thanks very much for posting it,after almost 30 years I can see also remaining goals ,although I wished NHL to win.

  • can someone write the names of players from NHL-Stars pls!

  • For this game it was:

Barber, Beck, Bossy, Dionne, Dryden, Clarke, Gainey, Gillies, Perreault, Potvin, Lafleur, Lapointe, McDonald, Robinson, Salming, Savard, Shutt, Sittler, Trottier

  • Thank You very much!! ... Hmm never thought that Potvin played in 1979! ... Maybe it's anotherone.

  • No it is the same one.

  • beck sucked, Dryden most over-rated piece of shit goalie ever, Clarke, past his prime, Lafleur (smoked a pack of cigarettes a day) the rest were good.

  • Thank you. This is classic, what I grew up with. 5 stars.

  • Hail Michailov

  • Excellent vid. Thanks a lot.

  • man its nice to hear Danny Gallivan call a game, regardless who wins. Thanks for sharing!
