im looking to buy a new hard drive because my old hard drive hasn't got much space left on it. does this device in the video copy everything from my old hard drive including the os to the new hard drive ? basically will everything form my old hard drive be on the new one ? so then it will just be a matter of putting the new hard drive into my laptop and without needing to istall a new os on it.
@stan0486 Technically yes, this adapter can be used to move files from one HDD to another, However, you'll also need Cloning software to move the OS and make the new HDD bootable. I explain how this is done in my "Cloning the HDD" in our uploaded videos. The process is fairly simple. Many manufactures have their own clone software already on the new drive to use or a link to download their software. -MrFixit
@ironhead41 I wouldn't tear off the tabs. Some 2.5" drives use a bracket there may be a tiny screws holding the tabs in place on the sides. Inbox me with your Email address and the model of the HDD in question. If you can take pics of the back side of the HDD, ill tell you where to send them so I can see the tabs. These HDD mount different ways depending on the builder of laptop/notebook. -MrFixit
@lookatmydragonballz that HDD is a SATA. Use the small red cable and the 4-pin to SATA power adapter as demonstrated in the video. Connect the other end of red cable to the adapter's plug marked SATA. Plug the sata power adapter into the power supply watch the orientations. The SATA HDD have different connectors than IDE. -MrFixit
i have 2 computers windows 7 and the other one is windows me but my windows me turns on but it gives no signal to monitor is there a way to fix that? please if there is tell me
@grclubpengujuan With monitor already on, turn PC on. Does anything appear on the monitor? You should see info displayed during Power On Self Test and manfacture's logo, followed by a short beep (some PCs), Any of that show? If the PC is booting to desktop, either the monitor or the Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) is bad. Connect monitor to another PC, if it works then the GPU is bad. GPU can be replaced depending on what type. Let me know the result and we'll from there. -MrFixit
i proved that monitor on my windows 7 and it worked right on the other computer when i turn the computer and the monitor it stays in stand by mode it shows nothing on my windows me so the monitor is fine so what could be the problem
@grclubpengujuan Since the monitor works and you hear Win ME's theme music, the GPU need replaced. Integrated Graphics Processors (IGP) cannot be replace since they're made into the motherboard, but a new graphics card can be added using either the PCI or AGP expansion slot. This is fairly simple to do as long the new card supports Win ME. When u turn on PC, Watch the HDD light. If it stays on solid for more than 15 seconds turns off and nothing else happens, then its a different problem.
@grclubpengujuan Ok if the HDD light stays solid on, there's nothing you can do other than replace the motherboard and CPU. This is an indication that something is wrong with either the MB or the CPU. If there are files on the drive that you want to keep, u can use an IDE/SATA to USB adapter used in this video. -MrFixit
I'm sure this will be a dumb question. But I am trying to use a Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 on a HDD from a gateway mp8708, but the connectors in the back don't fit the adapter, there are no pins. Am I making a dumb mistake or do I need a different Adapter? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
@lookatmydragonballz Not a dumb question. Some drives especially those in laptop/notebooks use a Special adapter. What's the name and model number of the hdd? I'll see what I can find. -MrFixit
@diljeetdulay Look in Device Manager under Control Panel. Look to see if an Unknown Device was detected. This sometimes happen because the driver for the specific adapter isn't known to Windows. Check to be sure the adapter works with Windows 7, usually an updated driver will resolve the issue.
(wanted to recover files before i do system restore coz it will wipe out my memory but now im afraid i lost all my data coz i pulled usb and dint safely eject device pls respond)
@cberina You can use a software recovery tool that can try to repair the the HDD partition found on the net.Windows also has a start up repair tool which should be in the safe boot menu. when starting the computer press the F8 key down till the safe options appear. should be a startup repair option if windows will not start. -MrFixit.
i bought the Vantec CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter Supports 2.5-Inch, 3.5-Inch, 5.25-Inch Hard Disk Drives (Black) and my toshiba laptop windows 7 cant recognize device and went to blue screen warning error on device so i quickly unplug the sata adapter. i tried to put the hard drive back to my asus laptap and now it has been in startup repair for 16 hrs (before it was just a black screen) ....
Hi again. I bought the SATA/IDE, hooked up the old HDD, the computer does not show it in MY COMPUTERS, but does show in Disk Management.. I right click on the DISK 1 to change the drive letter, that option is greyed out. Any suggestions? Thank you!
@princesscupcaketatto Vista shouldn't have any problems reading HDD from Windows 98 since it used the old FAT32 and XP used either FAT32 or NTFS depending on its setup. Does DIsk management show the drive containing 'Unallocated' space or does it show the different partitions?
great video! I too have a problem with the drive comes up as Disc 2 in Computer Manager (not allocated), but can't access - any help would be appreciated.
I am in the process of doing this to 3 hd from old computers using an enclosure and managed to copy a 15gb drive from old HP computer. The other two HD, Western Digital, one 40gb one 80gb, from old eMachines with no power, will not copy. The drive will show up and then disappear when i try to copy either one. Will the procedure you have outlined work to do this or try something else? Also, we have 3.5 floppy and a drive for them, can we use this to copy them to recover data from them? Thx!
@princesscupcaketatto First, this adapter will NOT work with any internal 3.5" Floppy drives because they use a 34-pin connector, however, you can buy an External USB 3.5" FDD to do the same thing. As for the 2 HDD, If you are connecting them inside the PC, the IDE versions need to be set to SLAVE if there is another drive that shares the same cable, set to MASTER if no other drive is on the cable. This adapter disregards that protocol. -MrFixit
@ESRepair Thanks for the fast response. I will look into the enclosure for the 3.5 floppy.
The other 2 HDD's are out of the computer - neither tower will get power (both old eMachines). Since they will not get power, I need to do as you have outlined in the video and purchase the SATA/IDE cable and proceed per the video? Thanks for a great video too.
@princesscupcaketatto Your welcome. You can find the External 3.5 inch USB Floopy drives at Computer stores or online with no assembly required. Early versions of eMachine had faulty Power Supply Units. Yes, as I've outlined in the video, everything in the video should come with the adapter, except the HDD. I'm here if you need me. Thanks for the compliment. I'm Glad the video helps. -MrFixit
hey i got a question ??? where did you get the usb adapter for the hard drive and the power cord?? do radioshack have them?? also when i had my old hard drive in my pc when i would turn on my pc it will stay on for a while and then turn off thats why i got a new hard drive would i still be able to get data out of the old one
@xsilent801x You can purchase the Adapter online at many popular retailers, I haven't seen them sold in stores. As long there nothing wrong with HDD you can access it. From you're description of the PC, it sounds like the power supply is bad. -MrFixit
@labikoye depends on what's broke & extent of the damage. Physical damage would require the HDD to be sent to Data Recovery Center. They will repair the HDD enough to rocover your data. If its just the data corrupted, there are software that correct the partition errors to retrieve data. -MrFixit
I'm trying to use this method to access data from my desktop SATA 3.5" HDD but the drives are not accessible, possibly because the Drive Letters are not allocated. It was a partitioned C & D drive. Both letters already exist on my laptop. The partitioned drive comes up as Disc 2 in Computer Manager. Right-clicking on only gives me a "help" option on the un-named C-drive and a delete option for the data partition (D-drive) where most of our files are saved.
@tricky74000 When a new drive is added (ex. USB Drives), the system automatically assigns the next available drive letter. Drives do not have a designated drive letter, that's up to BIOS and the OS. The HDD should show under My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista and Win7) from the Start Menu. Drive names are optional and not required. If the drivers for the adapter installed correctly, the drive should be accessible from the desktop. Inbox me for further help. -MrFixit
@simhopp XP and later OS using NTFS on HDDs enecrypt the user directory as part of the security improvement. To access the directory on another HDD, you must use or create an user account of the same name and password used on the old HDD. This is the easiest method, however there are others if this doesn't work. -MrFixit
@sarahpep421 If there is room in the PC, you can use the adapter inside the old PC. 3.5" SATA drives are easier to connect without removing them if you can reach them. IDE may be difficult without removing them. -MrFixit
@nowaas66 I ( Whizkid ) bought mine from Geeks . com , which is where MrFixit said he got his and referred me . Run a search for SATA to IDE Adapters on their homepage .
@nowaas66 The adapter is called IDE/SATA to USB Adapter. It's compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0. Works with Win98 (with drivers) to Windows 7 OS. Many Computer stores sell them for around $20. They do vary from model to model. be sure to read the features and check the adapter works with 2.5 inch drives. What you see in the video is what most of these adapters are packaged with. Once connected the HDD will act as an external drive. -MrFixit
@Blizzardv100 I'm ( Whizkid ) going out on a limb here and I'm going to say yes . The adapter has hookups for SATAs and IDEs , big ones and little sizes as I have forgotten the correct measurements. While I can't remember if it was an IDE or SATA drive , I do remember him using this adapter to check the hard drive on a Sony and I've used the same adapter on desktop IDE harddrives . I'll let him verify it though .
@Blizzardv100 Yes, be sure the adapter supports 2.5 inch IDE / SATA drives. Some laptops also use an adapter to connect the HDD to the motherboard that you may need to remove to use the HDD connectors. If the laptop still works you can use the USB transfer cable instead, like the one used in "Transfer Files and Settings" video. -MrFixit
I have a hard drive from a toshiba laptop that was taken out of it because the laptop broke and was beyond repair or so we were told. My grandson took the HD out and this is the model numbers etc. MK2035GSS and HD2A30 B ZKO1 T
Anyway is there any way i can recover the pictures and other files i have onn it and transfert them to my new laptop
@NormS1944 Yes. You'll need a 2.5" SATA to USB adapter. The adapter works with 2.5 inch SATA II type drives like your old HDD. they should come with a power supply to power the drive or an adapter to power the drive via USB. once plugged in, the HDD acts as an external HDD. OR you can use an external USB drive kit to convert your old hdd to usb. I do have a video that shows how it is done if you choose too.
@CityFlashLights The power supply comes with the adapter which also includes the adapter to convert the IDE 4-pin molex power connector to the SATA power connector as demonstrated. -MrFixit
hi, so i PC game and i am get a new rig soon but i don't want to lose all of my data from hardrive i have a western digital hardrive so if i get this when i get my new computer i just hook it up and it will transfer so when i put my hard drive back in my case i will have all my data correct?
@almirkaradza55 yes. hook the old HDD to the new pc via the adapter. Keep in mind that you can only transfer files that were created or downloaded. Any installed programs need to be installed on the new computer before transferring any files created by that program. if the new PC has room you can install the old HDD as a secondary drive. If the new pc has no OS you can either clone the drive to the new pc or install the HDD as the boot drive. -MrFixit
@jesslm0590 Yes, these adapters will work on any 2.5 & 3.5 inch HDD, regardless of the manufacture, using either IDE or SATA connections as demonstrated in the video. -MrFixit
Hey i seen your video on how to transfer data from a hard drive i got an acer aspire 5532 and i believe that the motherboard has died on me will this work with a 2.5 inch hard drive i need to get pictures off of it since the computer is dead and not worth fixing is this a cheaper way to get info off or take it to a computer specialist and have them remove the data from me with i believe is more expensive so PM me and let me know what i should do thanks :)
@danielc365 The USB adapter costs around $15. You'll need a SATA to USB adapter or the 2.5 inch SATA External drive kit, if keeping the drive. The HDD may use an adapter connecting it to the motherboard. You do not need it. -MrFixit
@FR3SHxTUHxD3ATH Here is the link to the one I use. geeks.mshopper.net/productDetails.jsp?id=128665063&keyword=IDE%20SATA%20USB%20adapter&indexPosition=6
Okay. So my computer fried a week before we moved. Go figure. I have about 2,300 songs, 1,000 pictures and about 200 videos. I hope they're still there. I'm getting a computer next week. I have a SATA hard drive. Now what do I need?
@FR3SHxTUHxD3ATH I know how that feels. If the HDD is still functioning, you can do 1 of 2 things. You can install the HDD into the new PC as a secondary drive or use an IDE/SATA to USB adapter like in the videos. MrFixit
@SHAAFKAT your DELL uses a 2.5 inch IDE drive. It will be simaliar to the one in the video. It has a 44-pin connector. The USB adapter need to accept 44-pin IDE drives. Some laptops use an additional adapter to connect HDD to motherboard. That adapter can be removed to access the OEM connector on the HDD. -MrFixit
my hd is showing what its calling i/o error and then later it told me i need to format to access it ... does this mean my files are impossible to retrieve ?
@acrock21 Maybe not. Some I/O errors (Input/Output) can be caused by errors in the File Allocation Table (FAT). There are Data recovery softwares that can attempt to fix the errors on the drive, however, if the errors are caused by hardware issues, there not much you can do except have the HDD sent to a Data Recovery Lab. They will be able to retrieve the Data from the drive. -MrFixit
@sanbox242 yes u can. They're one in the same. Clone the old HDD to the USB drive. Disassemble the usb drive and remove the HDD. I hv 2 videos installing IDE and SATA drives. Standard USB drives use an IDE HDD. Some that used SATA drives used dual-USB or firewire connctors. -MrFixit
@IzumiIshtar You can, but depends how it was encrypted. Windows OS starting with XP that uses NTFS automatically encrypts the user account and the files they create under their username directory. An account on the new computer must use the same username and password used on the old HDD to access the encrypted data. If a 3rd-party software was used to encrypt the HDD, that program needs to be installed on new computer to access the drive. -MrFixit
Good video on the adapter. But deleting a partition and formatting the drive does not touch the data on the disk. Any recovery software will recover it with no problem. You need to use a disk wiping program, however this can take many hours, the easiest way to get rid of old data is to physically destroy the hard drive.
@Alxmir23 if the pc still not recgonizing the HDD unless formated, try data recovery software to access the HDD. This may recover data and repair the File Allocation Table or NTFS data. -MrFixit
Your fingers are gross. Also, when you buy one of these kits dont cheap out get a nice one because they're good to have around. I myself ordered a Rosewill SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 kit and it was well worth spending the extra money.
ok so I have a 3.5 Hard drive (from my old PC). I bought the IDE/SATA adapter. Do I HAVE to buy a Power Supply as well. If so, where can I buy one, and what exactly would I type in in the search bar if I wanted to buy this?
@Skillz990 The IDE/SATA adapter should come with a 12V/5VDC power adapter for 3.5 inch drive similar to the one in the video. The kit includes a USB adapter, SATA data cable, 12V/5VDC power supply, and a 4-pin to SATA power adapter as described in the video. -MrFixit
@kangegha The USB adpater itself draws power from the USB. The power cable is used to power 3.5 inch IDE and SATA drives. The 4-pin power adapter will plug directly to IDE drive but need the SATA power cable adapter to convert the IDE power plug to a SATA power plug. If connecting a 2.5 inch IDE drive, no power connector required since the drive can be powered by the USB hub. -MrFixit
@ESRepair Thanks for the explanation, but I have 1 more question here.I did open the hard drive on another computer but I had a problem. The computer said that I don't have permission to see/open those data. I was required to take over the ownership from the new computer.I could do that but I had to do it for each folder, which is so tiring and waste time. I did use password on my computer.Do u know how to solve this problem?like just type the my password one time and I can open all my files.Tks.
@kangegha Start PC in safe mode. right click on the drive that you want to take ownership (in my computer) and choose properties, click 'security' tab, click 'advanced',click 'Owner' tab, under 'change owner to:' select your username, check 'replace owner on subcontainers and objects',click Apply (may take some time),click 'Permissions',click 'add',type 'everyone', Type your user name just for yourself.OK it,click 'full control' under 'allow.' OK it.check 'replace permission on all'. OK. Then OK.
@kangegha when you see the manufacture's logo, press F8 till startup menu appears. Then choose 'safe mode'. Have the HDD plugged in. After desktop loads go to my computer. When the HDD appears then follow steps above. -MrFixit
@Rsstaylor Yes. Any PC with a USB 1.1, or higher, port available running Windows 98 or higher with the following exceptions: MACs can READ a NTFS hard drive but not write to one. Windows prior to XP cannot read or write to a NTFS drive. -MrFixit
@xFaNaTiiCzZx I believe the best way to tranfer files from a PS3 is by using a USB jump drive/Flash Memory card or use a media server. Go to VIEW under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle (not X) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external . Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly and vice versa. -MrFixit
the device does not appear in "My Computer" but it does when i go in "Control Panel - Devices and Printers". My HDD is password protected, is that why i cant see it? and is there anyway to fix this?
1. If I have macbook, can I still use the USB to SATA/IDE adapter to access a few files from an old hard drive of a broken computer (Windows XP, specifically)?
2. If so, once I'm done, can the old hard drive serve as an external hard drive if I keep the necessary connecters?
If someone could let me know, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. -Matt
@RockDemon1990 My knowledge with macs is limited, but to my knowlege, MacBooks can read HDD formatted with NTFS but cannot write to the drive. Most PCs starting w/ XP have the HDD in NTFS format. The HDD can still be used as an external drive but will need reformatted to macbook specs to be able to write to it. -MrFixit
a quick noobie question if you dont mind answering. my sata laptop charger has the same conections as your sata hard drive (7.00 mins on you video) but its a lot smaller and slim than yours. do i connect the cables the same as you or would the power supply fry (burn) my hard drive.i thought as its smaller it would use some sort of usb power cable. please reply. much appreciated in advance. thanks
@KNOXTA I'm not sure I understand what u r asking. The SATA drive I used is a 3.5 inch drive. The 2.5 inch versions are used in laptops. They look like the small HDD sitting on the left in the begining. Laptop chargers will fry any HDD due to the 19VDC output. Drives that are 2.5 inch can be powered from the USB buss but 2 my knowlege 2.5 inch SATA drives require a special USB adapter that can regulate the power to the drive. Its connections are different. -MrFixit
@ChallengeLobbyyz Yes. This adapter works on ANY computer with an available USB 1.1 / 2.0 port. If the desktop PC still works, I've demonstrated how to use the USB file transfer cable to transfer files and settings to a new comupter. -MrFixit
@ItsOttis Yes, as long as the HDD's partition(s) not corrupted, however, in the event the drive is corrupted, there are free recovery software online that can assist recovering data. -MrFixit
Hey man i have pretty much the same thing you do and when i link my old hard drive and i try to access "My Pictures" it at first tells me i dont have permission to access the folder but after playing with it when i right click the folder and click properties then click securtiy tab then i click advanced and then owner and i click my PC name which happens to be JSTOWING then click apply then ok and that will allow me to open the folder but all the pictures inside say they cant be open can u help?
@kraden18 Starting with Windows XP, the introduction to NTFS allowed USER accounts to be encrypted to prevent unauthorized access from another USER. As long as the HDD was formatted using NTFS, by default the account is encrypted, even when the HDD is removed. Try changing the permission for each file and see if that helps. Another way is to create another USER account using the same exact USER name and PASSWORD that was used on the old HDD, this should do the trick since the keys would match.
Does this work to transfer program files also? So I don't have to find disks and installers and what not? Ok, what I was about to do til I saw this was about to put in a hard for the first time. I want to install it then clone programs to the old drive then make it my main (C) drive.
@RocHardEntGrp If you are upgrading to a new Hard Disk Drive, watch my "Clone/upgrade HDD" video. That video will walk you thru the steps to clone the entire HDD using a free software. The adapter in this video can be used to clone a HDD if necessary. This video allows you to transfer data files from a HDD in a dead computer.
@NowNoon Your welcome. This type of adapter is used as a temporary means to access IDE/SATA drives and also has backup software capabilities. If the HDD is still good why throw it away.... There are other means to convert any HDD to USB permanently, which I will show in the near future. -MrFixit
@AmandaMeli Thank you. Using this process will work whether it's a PC to laptop or vise versa. The process was designed in the event you have a HDD from a dead computer, however, if you are transferring files from one computer to another, then you do have other options. You can use either a USB File transfer cable adapter or a 'NULL' Ethernet cable (a.k.a crossover ethernet) to interlink 2 computers together to transfer files. The USB File transfer is the simplest to use with minimum setup.
@dylan9436 There is not much you can do if the drive is corrupted. You can attempt to fix a HDD by a recovery program or a specialized company. you can try to reformat the drive if you choose too.
thank you so much, your my pc god!! im gonna get that stuff for my old desktop hard drive. about 10 years since i last seen its contents, oh the wonders of what could be on that thing, i sure hope this works! thxs again!!
@dukejon91 Thank you , glad that we could help . I have a few old 5 1/4 floppy discs that I 'd like to get access to. I know that there are still a few compuers with those drives in them , but these were written by the old Tandy Color computers.
@ESRepair Whizzy, those old 5.25 floppys used on that TRS-80 used a different format than the standard used today. Besides, I can tell you what was on them. There was OS9 (before DOS), DeskMate, old BASIC programs I wrote, Robot Odysseys (an old game), etc. - MrFixit
@drcannabudz The IDE/SATA to USB is backward compatible so it will work on the slower USB 1.1. You can easily upgrade to 2.0 by adding a USB 2.0 PCI expansion card.
@drcannabudz As I'm not the computer geek ,MrFixit , I don't know except to say that if all of the other requirements for the device is met , such as the version of windows , etc . and the USB version is the only thing different then it should still work , it will just be slower . I have hooked USB 2.0 stuff up to a USB 1.0 before and got a message saying that the device would perform better on a USB 2.0 . However , I'll let MrFixit answer for sure .
If it is dead ,then there is no hope for it that I know of . But, I'll let the computer expert half of ESRepair , MrFixit , answer it for sure . I'm willing to say that if it's dead then there is no hope for it .
@n1ck1216 How is the HDD 'kind of dead'? If the problem lies within the mechanical/hardware failure of the drive, it does make it more difficult to transfer files without a data recovery company to retrieve the files, but, as long as you can access the files, this procedure will do the job before the drive fails.
Thanks. This looks like even I should be able to do it. The adapter costs about $20 at Fry's. I didn't want to buy it until I'd seen how to use it.

ESRepair 2 weeks ago
@ESRepair Windows Vista is the system i was trying to change it on.
the old HDDs are: 1 from windows 98 and 2 from windows xp
princesscupcaketatto 2 weeks ago
@princesscupcaketatto Vista shouldn't have any problems reading HDD from Windows 98 since it used the old FAT32 and XP used either FAT32 or NTFS depending on its setup. Does DIsk management show the drive containing 'Unallocated' space or does it show the different partitions?

I am in the process of doing this to 3 hd from old computers using an enclosure and managed to copy a 15gb drive from old HP computer. The other two HD, Western Digital, one 40gb one 80gb, from old eMachines with no power, will not copy. The drive will show up and then disappear when i try to copy either one. Will the procedure you have outlined work to do this or try something else? Also, we have 3.5 floppy and a drive for them, can we use this to copy them to recover data from them? Thx!
princesscupcaketatto 4 weeks ago
@princesscupcaketatto First, this adapter will NOT work with any internal 3.5" Floppy drives because they use a 34-pin connector, however, you can buy an External USB 3.5" FDD to do the same thing. As for the 2 HDD, If you are connecting them inside the PC, the IDE versions need to be set to SLAVE if there is another drive that shares the same cable, set to MASTER if no other drive is on the cable. This adapter disregards that protocol. -MrFixit
ESRepair 4 weeks ago
@ESRepair Thanks for the fast response. I will look into the enclosure for the 3.5 floppy.
The other 2 HDD's are out of the computer - neither tower will get power (both old eMachines). Since they will not get power, I need to do as you have outlined in the video and purchase the SATA/IDE cable and proceed per the video? Thanks for a great video too.
princesscupcaketatto 4 weeks ago
@princesscupcaketatto Your welcome. You can find the External 3.5 inch USB Floopy drives at Computer stores or online with no assembly required. Early versions of eMachine had faulty Power Supply Units. Yes, as I've outlined in the video, everything in the video should come with the adapter, except the HDD. I'm here if you need me. Thanks for the compliment. I'm Glad the video helps. -MrFixit

Hello can you retrieve data from broken HDD?
labikoye 1 month ago
@labikoye depends on what's broke & extent of the damage. Physical damage would require the HDD to be sent to Data Recovery Center. They will repair the HDD enough to rocover your data. If its just the data corrupted, there are software that correct the partition errors to retrieve data. -MrFixit
ESRepair 1 month ago
I'm trying to use this method to access data from my desktop SATA 3.5" HDD but the drives are not accessible, possibly because the Drive Letters are not allocated. It was a partitioned C & D drive. Both letters already exist on my laptop. The partitioned drive comes up as Disc 2 in Computer Manager. Right-clicking on only gives me a "help" option on the un-named C-drive and a delete option for the data partition (D-drive) where most of our files are saved.
tricky74000 1 month ago

@Blizzardv100 I'm ( Whizkid ) going out on a limb here and I'm going to say yes . The adapter has hookups for SATAs and IDEs , big ones and little sizes as I have forgotten the correct measurements. I'll let him verify it though .

@Blizzardv100 Yes, be sure the adapter supports 2.5 inch IDE / SATA drives. NormS1944 2 months ago
@NormS1944 Yes. You'll need a 2.5" SATA to USB adapter. IzumiIshtar 4 months ago

However , I'll let MrFixit answer for sure .

will it work if the hard drive is kind of dead
n1ck1216 1 year ago
@n1ck1216 How is the HDD 'kind of dead'? If the problem lies within the mechanical/hardware failure of the drive, it does make it more difficult to transfer files without a data recovery company to retrieve the files, but, as long as you can access the files, this procedure will do the job before the drive fails.

@icedxtear it's called an IDE/SATA to USB adapter. I purchased this online. Use your favorite search engine and search for 'IDE/SATA to USB adapter'
