the handgun can't do diddly-dick against a crimson head.

At the moment you first encounter with a Crimson head you should easely have a shotgun already which is youre best defense against these guys.

Handgun is possible if youre in a wide area and having a little handyness in avoiding them.

I think the first time you encounter a crimson head is the point where you get the mansion key (shield) in the traproom. Where behind you is rising a crimson from the ground.

Just burn corpses and getting headshots as much as possible xD

Killing a zombie, without decapitateing it or burning it, will result in it getting back up as a crimson head later. Kill it, then it's dead for good.
