Using exploits such as "skip duel" is cheating, IMO. My fastest speedrun was in PoP Classic for J2ME phones, with all the levels. Took less than 30 min to complete it.

Is your version of POP1 an enhanced version or something, because your levels 3 and 7 have a green hue, and also the 'parry' sound effect is different.

There are three known DOS versions. The gameplay is the same in all of them, but some minor tweaks were made.

v1.0 is the original release.

v1.3 changed some of the level colours, added a proper setup program, and changed the cheat command from "megahit" to "improved".

v1.4 (the version used here) was just a minor update to the setup for newer systems.

Oh I HATE the fat guy at 5:16. Bad memories. This game used to kick my ass. Haven't played it for years though. I should do that though. See if the fat guy is really all that. I remember the combat being clever and hard. Maybe that was just back then but it still looks fun.

Excellent stuff - I was planning on uploading my own speedrun but my best time is about four minutes slower! There are a lot of shortcuts here I had no idea about, like the almost complete bypass of Level 4 and the off-screen going through the portcullis on Level 5.

No, though it was recorded using an emulator since I didn't have a soundcard with DOS drivers.

The game only runs at 12fps, so it's pretty easy to memorise and perfectly time everything. The guards are generally the only problem.

Didn't know it was possible to avoid the guard, and you made that flawlessly :) My best runs were about 29-30 minutes and 1-2 deathes in process. BTW is this PC version? because the sounds seem different(and painful for my ears lol) than in NES version.

Fighting enemies and getting potions take a lot of time... when you know all the levels and you know exactly what to do... you can go pretty quickly.

What exactly happens at 04:35? I'm unsure how you manage to get from the very left of the initial screen to beyond the gate of the next screen without seeming to have to go through it. Is this a glitch?

That's all I've seen so far, but I'm very impressed. Particularly with the way you got past the skeleton by grabbing on to the ledge - I never knew about that.

1. You can't bump into gates when they're off the screen.

2. The game doesn't switch screens if you keep moving with the sword drawn.

You basically have to keep stepping backwards with the sword drawn without leaving any gaps in the timing, so when the game finally loads the next screen you're already on the other side of the gate.

There isn't enough room to go straight into a running jump. You have to walk up to the edge and either turn-slide + jump (like I did) or short-jump + grab.

It happens if you turn-slide into the gate from a certain spot.

I think it's because the game registers you as being on the other side of it for a moment before it knocks you back, and during this moment the guard thinks he can get to you and takes a step forwards.

How the hell are you passing the first guard? He just hits me as soon as I jump.

Pay closer attention to the timing of the first jump before you enter that screen.

More specifically, look at the last frame of animation just before the screen flickers black. If you don't see the same thing as the video (i.e. raised knee) then you got the timing wrong and can't pass the guard.

I used the same method to check the timing for the first guard of Level 2. If timed right (long step just as the screen changes), jump through the guard. If not, it won't work so step past him instead.

I remember playing this game with my dad when I was young, and after about 3 years we finally got to level 12 with 5 minutes left on the clock. We didn't make it. After that I was so frustrated I refused to play it again. I haven't played it since.

Seeing this video gives me hope though: I can actually SAVE and LOAD the game?! I didn't know that!

He didn't cheat, he just exploited the game; a minor exploitation at that. In most speed runs the player usually take shortcuts...hence the word speed. Check out various speed runs with other games and you'll see the same thing. Quit hatin' dude. The guy made a flawless run in this game, give him props.

There's a fine line between cheating and getting through loop-holes imo. I am not hating, all I said was that exploiting these glitches wasn't properly playing the game. You are the one that started the childish name-calling. I am familiar with the fact that carrying out speed runs requires the use of shortcuts, I'm just not convinced that simply jumping right past guards (just as if you're pressing 'k' within cheat mode and you can instantly kill them) is really right.
