@Aussiepsycho1 i reckon it's a great ad. it forces you into a judgement call - that's what the military is all about - judgement, and good confident decision making. it makes you question everything - the decency of the woman, the decency of the soldiers, trustworthiness, helplessness etc. it directs the viewer to the defence website for answers (good recruiting - get people interested). i see it's a "left-of-centre" ad, but i reckon it's great.

im in the NZ army we have to watch stuff like that alot for tests, and our training programs are one of the best in the world. we mainly work for peace keeping and aid, hardly any conflict, which is what a countries army should be proud of, what glory is there from taking lives? or losing your own.

Much respect to the NZ soldiers. They are tough fighters and have limitless energy. Just need combat experience to be an awesome fighting force. The pre-combat checks, for example, should have been done by the NCO before commencement of the patrol and not during. It kills me that the NZ warriors have no top cover. Still, the video is very compelling and is an example of what a newbie platoon should not get itself into.

Tactical mistake on the part of the NZ warriors. 1)The woman clearly had a long rifle on her back. 2) God! Where the hell was the top cover? 3) In open terrain, spread flank formation between vehicles offers mutual covering fire, assuming you had someone in the gun turret mount. 4) If possible, potential aggressors in civilian dress need to be observed and spaced by at least a 400m flank separation (or, the maximum range of an RPG) Lessons learned by the US Army in blood and sacrifice.

You are on a peacekeeping operation in this situation so a suicide bomber is not likely a threat. An old lady carrying a child away from a village is no threat to you at all. Everyone in less developed countries carry rifles as the way of life, besides hers is shouldered. OPEN THE DOOR!

Yes i . Just because someone has a weapon in that part of the world it doesn't mean they mean harm. What i would do is drive 100 metres up the road and then dismount into a line formation and tackle the situation from there. The reason being is she might think twice if she does mean harm because shes facing 8 soldiers who all have a clear field of fire while her weapon is slung on her shoulder. If they were on their way to a fight why would she be carrying her baby to.
