I've got a copy of this, that I bought from a kid at my school who came from Japan about 20-ish years ago, for about £5. I didn't realise it was rare and thought I might have a hidden gem in my old Megadrive collection - but it's the bootleg version. D'oh!
Nintendo had exclusive HOME CONSOLE rights for everyone debating about it's arcade existence. An arcade machine is not a home console (unless you live in an arcade?).
Honestly I don't get it why people only declare the authenticity of the game if its not a "genesis" this item was release in asia back then. what if you can found a the front sticker and change it? an now its authentic.. sega is just stupid about saying just 10 was release and later they declared 20.. that some lame excuse...
Hi lukemorse1, i have that game too. i still have the box, but no instruction manual. I'm planning to sell it soon. I don't understand why the genesis carts release is much expensive than japanese carts. its just crazy.
Interesting, but this version of Tetris seems much more basic than the NES Tengen version what with its co-op play options and fancier looking graphics on a system half as capable. I own that version, and honestly, even if this game had've been released and was common, I still wouldn't care to own it. This version to me seems only slightly more interesting than the Famicom only Tetris.
I remember the FULL version WAS released on the sega Megatech arcade machine. Alexander, guitarist of the UK rock group 'EUTOPIA' used to own the machine...and yes he confirms that the backgrounds changed instead of being one single background. The music he said (and he would know!) is the same. Happy days!! FYI the megatech was similar to the play-choice 10 by nintendo and worked on a time basis. Keep the rarities alive luke!! :)
in argentina there is a lot of pirate sega genesis games and this game is easy to find , this game is in every 19 in 1 cartridges . sorry for my bad english.
Saludos .
That my friend is cool as hell. Great find, nice hidden treasure you found there. I remember reading a story about this I think it was on Digital Press web site not sure though.
Awesome find Luke. I'm yet to get any unreleased games for my collection, but I do collect promotional copies of PAL games. Maybe one day I'll get lucky and find something like this. Living in England sure does suck for game collecting.
I wouldn't go that far...one did sell for under 5000 pounds in Japan, but 100,000 US$ would be insane, there is no game that "rare" and expensive (afaik) and I doubt many game collectors would even afford to pay that much for a game, let alone be stupid enough to actually do it.
You should be aware that there are some fake bids on ebay at times. These have the "gift" or raising the price on that particular item on future auctions ;)
100,000$ is insane, and I doubt that auction was real (or maybe it was but there were no bids and the auction expired?). Or it could have been 10,000, that I can believe since this particular game is rated at somewhere between 3,000$ and 16,000$
Nice music yes, being the Flash Columns music from the GG/MS versions of Columns. I've always believed this to be a pirate and not an actual game to be released by Sega, so that's something new I've learned.
Yes, Sega has Columns, and yes Sega eventually got Tetris, but as for me finding this game for my collection, I'll pass. It has to be official, even if this is an exception.
This is so awesome Luke! Thanks for showing some footage of it!! and yeah, the music is smokin'!!! if 20 or so copies only exists.. I reckon the price for a complete one would be in thousands!! *Gulp
Well everyone says the NES ones don't have a two player mode, but I have a Famicom (fake) cartridge of Tetris 2 that has two player, and it's supposed to be a ROM copy of the original.
Very interesting video Luke. I didn't realize that Sega made this game for the MD. The graphics actually look more like the NES version. Thanks for sharing.
The mass released NES version of Tetris did SUCH a disservice to the tetris loving community. It is beyond lame that Nintendo did not include a 2 player mode. IMO the worst decision Nintendo has ever made.
Oh wow... I remember seeing this game up here in Canada several months ago, however, the shape of the cartridge was different. It had the same label, but the cartridge was shaped like a US Genesis/European MegaDrive game with a notch cut out so it will work not only in a US Genesis and European MegaDrive, but also a Japanese MegaDrive. I should have bought it.
I'm asuming that's a bootleg since it was never released for the Mega Drive? The cart sure looks like one, I had several of those cartridge "models" and they were all fakes. Nice nonetheless :D.
To make it clear, I wasn't refering to the actual cartridge design which is a japanese MD one, but it looks a bit cheap. Did some research today, and to answer ashenclone, it IS a rare game, just because you say you have it it that doesn't make it a common game. Leaving that type of comments just so people visit your chan is rather lame. Back to Tetris, a few "official" carts do exist, one sold in Japan for around 900.000 Yen?! The bootlegs are also hard to come by, so I'd call it rare, yes.
Luke this looks to be a bootleg cart. There's around 10/12 of the actual printed games with cart, manual and box supposed to be in existence- I'll post links on your channel page with pictures. Like some has already mentioned Muncombo in Spain has a complete copy of the real deal signed by Aleksei Pazhitnov. I'll post a link for this as well.
Price wise they apparently go for literally thousands.
holy crap i actually have this i found it a local cash converters with a jap mega drive system. i thought it was a pirate because it cost me $2.50 for the cart and 10$ for the mega drive
I often wonder how these uncompleted or unreleased games make it out to the public and into people's hands in the end, I'm guessing some of the original developers have them lying around and sell them on sites such as Ebay. I wonder if this will work on a PAL Mega Drive or US model Genesis.
there is a guy that has this game signed by Aleksei Pazhitnov and his collection is one of the bests i ever seen, he has the complete Mega Drive jap, 32x and Mega CD game collection, his nick is MundoCombo and you can see his collection at nakoko users
I agree with mystftg in that your cart is a pirate version. In fact I've got the same cart myself with a box. The "official" version has a different cover/cart sticker and bears a Sega logo.
Quite a curious piece of history, Luke! But in a way, maybe it was for the better. If it weren't for Columns, we wouldn't have the kick ass Columns 3!!
Great video, but your price suggestion is way off, at least for a genuine copy.
As far as I know most boxed copies sold for at least ¥250.000-500.000, going up as high as ¥900k (in 2005) and I think one sold in 2008 for ~11.000€
Your cart seems to be the infamous pirate copy, which is closer to the price you suggested. The label on the original cart, manual and box is completely different.
But you're correct about the ~20 copies that have been made (of the original cart).
I WANT I WANT I WANT!

Luke the reason why it look like it's printed on a printer, because it was. Yours is bootleged. That probably why the sega logo is fucked.

This is a port of the Sega Tetris released in Japanese arcades on Sega System-16 and System-16B. The music and most of the graphics are the same.
Notable differences:
Different block graphics
Different HUD layout
Different field border
Cheap-looking black backgrounds
The cartridge is definitely bootleg, the way it looks has nothing to do with the game being "unfinished".
You mention it being harder because of the arcade stick, but ironically that's closest to how it's meant to be played.

You are absolutely correct. The Tetris cartridge is a VERY VERY rare item.
I don't think most SEGA collectors, no matter how big of a fan you are, would be able to afford the astronomical price this cartrdige commands.
