Why would she refuse a promotion when she could get it and then have her alimony proportionally reduced? If, for example, one hundred dollars a month came from the job rather than from her ex-husband, that would have been the same thing for her and a little better for him and overall, the two of them would have made more money due to her income being higher. i firmly believe that if someone came up with a way to ensure that child support went DIRECTLY to the CHILD and wasn't used to support the ex-wife, child support payment rates would increase dramatically. most men want to support their children, they don't want to see their support cheques paying for their ex-wife. child support payments are way higher than they need to be to support the kids, and men know where the excess payments are going. men are not stupid.

@u2hubbard I don't have all of the answers but to me the vows do say until death do we part but five years and no kids seems reasonable short to me.Once kids come it is not short but in California for instance they look at anything over ten years as a long term marriage and rightfully so.You can never get those years back & sometimes circumstances are that health becomes an issue.Divorce is the easiest contract to enter into and the easiest and only contract you can break with no consequences.

The whole no fault divorce system is evil. It goes against basic property rights and is a soviet style system. This only started in 1969. Three states have a covenant marriage where only for adultry or serious abuse can you get a divorce and there is a stronger burden of proof for a divorce. More like, it very unlikely they'll get it , so the overwhelming majority don't ask. The alimony for stat is much smaller than the fathers-with-custody stat, 0.001% or whateve vs 5 - 10%. There are a litany of reasons Men avoid marriage today and alimony / child ransom is definitely a strong deterrent. Got my divorce yesterday. I asked for NOTHING and never intended to. But, I'm not against alimony in all cases. I had a friend who followed her husband all over the world with the Army trying to raise 2 kids, go to college, and keep a job while having to start over every year or two.
