Oh I have been looking for this for a very long time! I have the original record... but it's wonderful to hear it online - this version isn't as scratchy as my record. Leonard Bernstein's is the best version I've ever heard. :-) Thank you for posting!
AHHH....my childhood comes alive!! Yes, I too had the record as a child....It had pictures with it and I was forever captivated!!! To this day, this is one of the most magnetic pieces to turn a youngster on to the world of music and it's ability to bring prose to LIFE!! Peter's theme is my ringtone!!!
i had this recording on a 12-inch vinyl disc when I was a kid - I am so happy someone posted this! I loved this symphony then, and can't wait to share this with my kids tomorrow!
@larryjohnny I'm sorry to say, you are missing the point - Bernstein is teaching children about music, storytelling, the orchestra and much more - the music is available elsewhere, but it is not the same if you grew up with this, as so many of us did.
@Cruiserfrank OK, I will ! It's way better than this version with some dude talking over the music ! I don't care if it's the Bernstein Bear's.. I just want absolute music ! Anyways. I don't think Prokofeiv wrote the score so that some arrogant music know-it-all could blab over it ! Good bye !
When I teach my 6-8 aqnd 9-12 year old music classes, I love using this to see if the kids can guess from a list of characters which each one is. Awesome version!
I love this. My sister and I would listen to this when we were young and act out the parts. I can't wait to share this with my grandson. I loved Bernstein. Thanks for sharing this.

all I remember about the piece is that when I was about 6 or 7 we had a copy and the wolf on the cover gave me nightmares.

@bardess5 get off your high horse, that's what I'm asking for ! Where is the the version with no lyrics ! Your the one missing the point !

@larryjohnny This is the way Prokofiev wrote it. Get off YOUR high horse and go find some version without narration yourself.

I wore out this LP when I was a child. This was my favourite record. Thank you so much for posting!
If there were a list of "Greatest Americans of all time", Bernstein would surely rank high on the list. A talent for the ages.
And to answer Flutist11, yes, Julius Baker would have been the flutist back then, Stanley Drucker the clarinet.

@KCJazzKeys That's an excellent way to get kids excited about this kind of music :) it's certainly what made me like this piece!

I like Bernstein's voice :)
I wonder who is the flutist... Julius Baker?
Flutist11 1 year ago 2
@Flutist11 I think Bernstein's voice is wonderful :) I wish I had a way of finding out the answer to your question!

@Flutist11 Paula Robison plays the flute on the Bernstein recordings.
