  • Something deeply connecting about a train making headway across the landscape. In an airplane you're literally being hurled through the air on a wing and a prayer

  • wonderful footage, and great music too.. thank you x

  • This looks like one of the old Pioneer Zephyr diesels to me

  • luv the shot @ 5:23

    so cool..

  • i watched it with the music by Royksopp (their new album, this must be it), cool feel and so , like a road movie....

  • I ride the Harlem Division Mon - Fri. I enjoyed seeing how things have changed. One of the bridges at Mott haven is gone (just the foundations are left) and the bridge between harlem and the bronx was replaced Did I see an elevated subway at the Fordham station? By the way, I think that same conductor still works the express from White Plains to Grand Central!!! great video

  • @rbh7273

the elevated you saw was the 3rd ave el. the first view in the video was right after it made a sharp turn onto Gun Hill Rd. on its way to meeting up with the IRT White Plains Line. The second viewing was just north of Fordham Rd. Both scenes are in the Bronx, and the el was demolished in the early 70's. i rode it for the last time in January 1969.

  • 3:10, is that bridge still there? Very amazing footage! Cool to see the steamers ALL-OVER the place here.

  • @ 3:30 - the woodlawn tower before the bronx r. pkwy. bridge was added...

  • Great footage. Looks like this may be of the promotional tour of the original CB&Q Zephyr equipment. This train is now on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

  • yea well i believe that the future is what we have to focus on. but the reason the past is important because we cant move on without learning from the past

  • Fascinating and wonderful. Aren't you lucky that your family held on to this film? Do you know who shot it?

  • Film was bought at a yard sale many years ago by my brother. No idea who shot it.

  • this video is truly remarkable

  • holy fucking shit... nuff said

  • doc watson is perfect for this video!

  • When I was a young boy in the early 50's I can still remember the sound of steam engines in the night.

Just outside Boston where I grew up you could hear them going up to Lowell,Mass, N.H. and Maine.

We lived about a half mile from the tracks in an old wooden house and I can remember lying in my bed and hearing "woooooooooo, woooooooooooo!"

    Very haunting and very beautiful!

I wonder where we could hear recordings of that sound?

  • Halfway through my vedio, "Locomotive 1218 in Asheville", I caught the best whistle sound in all my videos. I play that over and over when I want to hear the long gone haunting sound. Nothing is like it. Enjoy!

  • What a great video and music love it.

    Tyvm Great Job

  • What a great piece of history. Leaving Denver Union Station eastbound on the CB & Q. You can see the flat country going east from Denver. It is in the afternoon and the sun is shining from behind. Note the "Tampa" (Colorado) station sign at about 2:01.

  • Now this is the kind of info that shows close attention to detail! I never saw the Tampa sign and knew there was lots of flat land, but had no idea where. Thanks for the help.

  • Thanks for posting this interesting video! There is always something new to see. Just today I noticed that at about 3:04 to 3:05 that there is a mail crane at this station (Brush, CO?). It has a bag of mail for the RPO to "grab on the fly". It is just to the right between the track-side shed and track. Also, the railroad is CTC equipped. Very interesting for this time-frame.

  • Incredible ride down long lost rails. Through this video we can still ride the Lightning Stripes of the NYC. Nice! JD

  • This is excellent and gives me plenty of modeling ideas (I like to model the NYC line in the 30's-50's). Wonderful time trip - a favorite video: 5 STARS!

  • at 5:50 they look like enjoyed singer

big thanx for this peice of US history

  • In NYC electrified zone,I see the "T" class motors. It had reminded me of my 1922 American Flyer MOTOR 3020. Excellent movie

  • is that jimmy skinner on the soundtrack?

  • My brother added music, so I only know Doc Watson is on it, not sure of the other string band stuff.

  • oh, cool, it's probably Doc then. Thanks for the footage, my 3 year old loves it to!

  • I likeded it. Check out my train vids.

  • The second part of this video in third rail electric territory is the New York Central from the Bronx into Manhattan. Great period footage. - Henry
