@JRTET21 There are non on this lens. It's not a circular fish-eye, but rectangular. That is on cropped sensor, not fullframe, there you'll have black edges. This is recorded with the Nikon D5000 which has a cropped sensor, so no black edges.
You can see a review of this lens on photozone.de where they used the Canon EOS 50D for the test.
@TheFilmersSkaters Maybe, but there still are no black edges form this lens. Only if it's filmed with a sensor bigger than APS-C, then there might be. But this lens does not give black edges for APS-C sized sensors. Check the test pictures on photozone.de and lenstip.com, none of them has it, and they're the full images as they're example pics from the lens. It's not a circular fish-eye.
that's why they're called fisheye, because of the curvilinear effects of barrel distortion...
just saying, circular has nothing to do with why there isn't a black border around the frame, it is because of the way the lens was designed for aps-c sensors.
@koreybishop I understand what you mean, but the lens manufacturers don't call them that. Rectangular ones cover the sensor they're designed to be used with, circular do not.
If not, they would just be called either circular wide angle, or just fish-eye,s ince then the term "fish-eye" would be equal to "circular fish-eye", and what then would a rectangular or maybe diagonal fish-eye be?
Sigma calls their fish-eye lenses that have black edges for circular, and the rest just fish-eye or diagonal
@koreybishop They're all wide angle lenses. It's when they're not corrected for the barrel distortion they're called fish-eye lenses. Those who are corrected are just wide angle. And there are then two kinds of fish-eye lenses, circular (with black edges) and rectangular/diagonal.
yeah, my bad. i knew that when it did fill the frame entirely that it was called a full-frame fisheye, so i figured that the opposite would just have to do with the fact that it was made for aps-c sized sensors and placed on a full-frame sensor. i didn't know the opposite was just called circular. again, my bad.
@koreybishop I found that they're calling what I called rectangulare different things, but most, I think, called it circular when it had black edges. I see the scientific use of those, but I prefer those that cover the full frame on the sensor used :)
This 8mm is one I'll get eventually though, no other, or an updated version if one comes, and the 14mm 2.8 =) I have the 85mm 1.4, and it's great.
@dragonknightsages I've got the 500D aswell! And where i live, the lens is sold with other name, Walimex Pro, but is the same lens. Where i live it costs 289€ (one US Dollar is 0,68€ Euro)
@dragonknightsages well, they are made in Korea, you could try some Korean websites, since both countrys are from asia, with China somewhere in the middle of them...give it a try!
Hey sry could i ask u another question. erm how do i take pics that will give me like a circle and everythign around it is black. like what a fisheye pictures usually do.
@dragonknightsages It depends on the camera, you'll need a Full Frame camera like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Otherwise, it will not be possible. Because with a camera like mine, with an APS-C Sensor with a 1.6 multiplying factor, the Samyang will be 12.8mm instead of 8mm. Nikon factor is 1.5 for APS-C.
The need for AF is not really big on 8mm. Just put on 1 meter and everything after half a meter (or so) will be sharp. A chipped version for roughly the same price would make me happy :)
On nikon you will get lightmetering on cheaper bodys (D3000, D5000, D40(x), D60, D70, D80, D90). These work now only in manual mode, so you have to guess the exposure yourself or use an external lightmeter. On canon you will get focus confirmation. Although this lens is manual focus, your camera will tell if the lens is focused correctly.
That was an awsome video. Kind of cool how we enter a new era where DSLR cameras are able to film with such high quality. Great parkour. He kept it flowy and kept to what parkour initialy was all about. The Jeep was a bit of a surprise but I enjoyed that as well.
Great Lens, I have brought one of these Samyang 8mm fisheye lenses two weeks ago on eBay from the polish guy " foto-tip "and its really impressive! Great quality, greate fun ! ;D
Does the samyang fit on a Nikon D3000 ?

Do you get lightmetering with this lens on a nikon DXX or DXXXX? It's a manual focus lens, but is it chipped?

It's not chipped, but Samyang will release chipped versions of their lenses next year. No autofocus though.

85mm with chip will be ready in march 2010 but we don't know yes when they will fisnish 8mm witch chip.
