The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is truly a match for the Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna orchestra's. Bernard Haitink understands Mahler like no one does, and still is one of the most 'beautifull' conductors to watch. This is a great Mahler! Thanks BBC!

(to AJHyoton) Rafe VW 3 or 5. And in concertos: Korngold or Barber violin are beginning to get more exposure now. Korngold & Barber were GREAT writers (major league). (Check out Renaud Capucon-Yannick-Rotterdam on EMIclassics, beyond awesome re: the Korngold). With all due respect to Mahler`s very-hard-work-ethic and his occasional grand slam home run, he is like a doubleA ballplayer (refer to evaluation by no less than Richard Strauss)

I agree. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is his perfect instrument for this masterpiece.

These are amongst the most accomplished & beautiful of orchestral players on the planet.

I can pay riveted attention to them even if they were washing the dishes, but when it comes to Mahler I can bite my tongue no further.

Why are huge resources expended on this hack-y writer when so much other seldom performed and more deserving music needs a hearing ??

The CBA should have an option to allow these players to sub-out if Mahler is programmed (I know a few of them will laugh at this)

It is always nice to know the great orchestras make clear mistakes even today. Note the brass blooper at :44 seconds - crank it, you will enjoy it. But the performance overall is still wonderful.

I'm not a particular fan of this orchestra in it's present incarnation, but how glorious it sounds here - like back during it's heyday in the 60s......
