I use LXDE for Xubuntu on my old 933 MHz (512 MB RAM) clunker computer.
LXDE is lighter and faster than XFCE, but there are a few less features. Still, I can use most of my programs. It's very useful for older computers. I can't use my Chromium browser, but I can use Google Chrome instead.
Lubuntu is fantastic on a virtual machine! The only problem I had with it is when you instal LXDE instead of gnome you no longer have wireless driver.
I'm using Kubuntu 9.04, but I think I'm going to move to Arch Linux with LXDE. I'm tired of all my KDE stuff crashing, and of Ubuntu needing a complete re-install every 6 months just to get recent software.
I just got Debian on my iMac 400 w/ 512RAM, and I was recommended to use this by the forum. Thank you for your video, better than screenshots. It will be for my linux learning computer, so if it is limited in funcition thats ok. So long as internet & basic apps work.
I use to run XFCE, but ran into too many small complications with it; mainly file management and moving things around. LXDE was perfect for me. It's light, simple, and I think it looks beautiful. I'm not running a low-end machine, but I'm not exactly running a gaming rig, either. Definitely my favorite desktop environment :D
I always used Gnome with Ubuntu (and I tried KDE and XFCE). I was looking for a lighter desktop and I found LXDE. It's great, really fast (P3 @ 1000Ghz & 773MB RAM) and the main menu looks like Gnome one, but it's more difficult to edit but better than XFCE menu.
The only reason I had to quit LXDE it's because it cannot run a VNC Server app (or at least I couldn't do it).
It sounds like he wants to invade Poland.

It should be animated, if you are using an old Version of LXPanel, please update. Current version is 0.5.3.

I used lxde for 5 months in machine with 256 mb ram and 1.4 ghz cpu run very fast :).

How does this compare to Xfce?
Is it more 'XP-ish' or 'Mac OS-ish'?
acsial 2 years ago
Its faster than XFCE but has less functionality. Give it a try so you can decide ;)
The default Desktop looks more like XP. But you can change it of course.

I've been having a lot of trouble with GNOME and KDE being idiots, I'm thinking about trying this. As long as Compiz works with it.

On my machine Compiz works fine

If you try it on your Laptop, give LXLauncher a try. It's very usefull for small screens.

Lxde is a very good window manager. very light weight; uses only about 40mb in ram.
J1234March 3 years ago
Hi
Yes LXDE is realy very light wight. But its not only a window manager, its a whole Desktop like Gnome, KDE or XFCE, but much faster.
