  • Leon Russell's a perfect example of a musician who's going to get a lot more widespread appreciation and recognition after his time is up. And I think that's a bit tragic.

  • @AsianAfro I'm afraid you are right. There are many of us life long fans that have had Leon's music as part of our lives for over 40 years, but there are so many that have not had the pleasure of being a fan. We can only feel sorry for them.

  • I remember walking up to Leon Russell when I was just a lil itty bitty thing and saying, "Excuse me, Mister Russell, can I get your autograph for my mommy? She really loves you a lot."

Great memories and my mom has that autograph until this very day and I'm about to be 27... Love you, mama.... <3

  • read cattails and roses

  • I love this song SUNG by Leon Russell...I heard it back when it was first released and have loved it ever since. I know some of you think that he doesn't have the "range" or that others sing it better...I disagree. This is the way it is suppose to be sung and this is the way it is suppose to sound. It is perfect and I love it!! It is a great song, that is why just about everyone has done their own rendition of it. Love you, Leon!

  • @52Chrylrex Amen!

  • The absolute beautiful melody along with his rustic southern badboy voice is so unique that I can't see why anyone would not fall headoverheels in love with this man or his song. I remember when I first heard it, I was in a crowd of people, I stood transfixed with tears streaming down my checks and I could not understand why everyone was not doing the same.

  • OMG. This song gives me chill bumps that thought were long gone. I'm crying just like I did in the 70's. Iove, love, love it.

  • Great song. That one guy sang it on the Voice... wasn't as good as this, but pretty darn good

  • Great song although Leon didn't have the range to sing it, however, Donny Hathaway sang this song the way it was supposed to be sung check it out Peace

  • The song was written and sung by Leon Russel... you're listening to "the way" it was supposed to be sung... Peace!!!

  • @53bkny JUst because Russell wrote the song doesn't necessarily mean his interpretation is good Russell's interpretation was Ray Charles like it sounds like a Ray Charles song however Russell lacked the range and vocal volacity to do the song justice DOnny Hathaway gave the song a real voice check it out

  • to each his own...

  • @InfinityNebula O HELL NO... No one does it like Leon.. it's his song and no one does it better.. The masses who've covered this song may sing well but it's so much more than that..it's a feeling, an emotion..THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE SUNG is just the way you hear it by the one, the only. The often imitated but never duplicated Mr Leon Russell

  • @Fruitloop186 Donny Hathaway sings this song better than anyone,Leon's version can't compare

    Peace

  • @InfinityNebula Yeah it is, but "Leon's version" is the original...he wrote this song, so you should have stated that Donny's version is better than the original to you!

  • @InfinityNebula Au contraire my dear..You want pretty or you want real ? No doubt the world at large want's real as in Leon real..NO ONE DOES IT BETTER THAN LEON... NO ONE !!

Since Russell wrote this song, it's his. He has graciously allowed other artists to TRY to do this song justice and many have, but to compare is sacreligious

  • Does Common use this song as a sample to "Retrospect for life''?

  • I recently rediscovered this masterpiece. Wow, I forgot how much I love this beautiful song. Thanks Leon.

  • watch "The Union" with Leon and Elton. I just KNEW Leon was Elton's idol. Could hear it in the music!

  • Leon's not dead yet......................

  • @ratlrbil Thankfully! Leon had some brain surgery a while back, but he seems to be doing fine. He and Elton John's concert together is showing on HBO this month!

  • There is such intimacy in this song, the haunting melody and Leon's peerless delivery of the beautiful lyrics, it feels like, whoever you are, he is "singing this song for you".

  • This songs gives me goosebumps. There are certain songs that you just HAVE to listen to on a regular basis. THIS is one of those songs.

  • So many great artists have made this over and over. But you created it! R.I.P Mr Leon

  • @matseman46 LEON IS NOT DEAD!!!!!!!!!

  • @judecreek2

I´m sorry i thought he was. I´m happy he´s still with us.....

  • @matseman46 Leon is not dead. He just finished an album with Elton John, which is Leon Russell's best selling album in over 30 years.

  • @CommittedGex

    I feel aweful...I´m sorry i thought he was dead...Apologize

  • @matseman46 Bite your tongue.. Leon is alive and well although he did have brain surgery not long ago..We are still blessed by his presence

  • @Fruitloop186 I´m So sorry i truly belived he was dead. I think i read it somewhere. But I was wrong. I´m glad i was. Leon is a great artist....

  • My dad has listened to Leon Russell since he could remember. On a long car ride my dad introduced his music to me, i was 9. I can still remember seeing the tears on my dads face while listening to this song. Im 19 now and i listen to this music, THIS song, every day because i figured out why my dad had tears. This song is so beautiful, so real that it makes you think, remember, feel, love. Thank you Leon for giving me these feelings in your music.

  • @dirtsrevenge1 That's lovely stuff, man.

  • @dirtsrevenge1 Thats good you remember that, thumbsup.

  • I love your song. I was looking for one that was from the day I was born and I love it :)

  • We're not perfect, for if we were something as beautiful as this song wouldn't exist...

  • would of been niceto have them both on piano across from each other alternating verses...woow

  • So many have done this song but none as good as Leon!

  • Amy :O

  • I love this song. especially, Leon Russell's version. Long live good ole rock n' roll!!!

  • "But I love you in a place

Where there's no space and time

I love you for all my life

You are a friend of mine

And when my life is over

    Remember when we were together

    We were alone

And I was singing this song for you"

  • is this the original singer for "a song for you"?

  • @xtinaluver1

yes, he wrote the song as well

  • @xtinaluver1 yes, Leon is the original singer and writer of this song, and he does it the best of everyone that has recorded it, because he can sound like he is really crying it out, and for all we know when he wrote it, it might just have meant something to him?

  • Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway sang his song much better. I just love Rays version!

  • @mspinkytee considering how leon has been so neglected and forgotten by the musical community over the years theres just something about hearing him sing this song that just feels so authentic and soul penetrating. ray's version is great but u can tell leon's soul is truly in it

  • I love this song..thanx for posting!

  • beautiful

  • his voice is so soulful and passionate

  • Cant wait to hear amy winehouse version of this!!!!

  • @speeddemon002 i know...I can't, either. I hope I can handle it.

  • @speeddemon002

pretty sure she is dead, yep positive. she should have went to rehab

  • @speeddemon002 If she didn't do it before July of last year you're going to have a long wait.

  • Leon, awesome song, awesome writer, awesome performer. Thanks! Oh, met you when we were both young in Grove, OK. I had no idea who you were until someone explained after we had chatted and you had gone. Wish I had known. I love to talk music.

  • this sends me to another place, another time... 1970 ...I remember he was a friend of mine

    thank you Leon

  • Elton John is correct, this song is an AMERICAN CLASSIC! Leon Russell has a great voice and he plays a mean piano. I first heard of him through Elton John, and now I love this song!

  • @RKLuffy88 If you are just "discovering" Leon, you are in for a magical musical journey!!!! Enjoy!

  • One of the greatest..song writing in the world... amazing

  • hell, the voice makes it even more soulful!!!!

  • loving it... praise be for this soul

  • loving it...

  • He wrote a timeless song, but the singing leaves a lot to be desired, no hate intended.

  • No...he may have written this song but The Temptations (with Dennis Edwards as lead) own it by completely making it all theirs!

  • wow

  • the rock and roll hall of fame is meaningless--Leon is sitting on the highest throne a musician can find in the heart and mind of every person who is capable of recognizing musical genius. The r and r hall of fame is just a tourist trap--spend the money to buy music instead.

  • @CattailsandRoses Leon was inducted into the R&R hall of fame last year...Elton John was the presenter. xo

  • @CattailsandRoses

Russell is actually in the Hall of Fame.

Albeit it took FAR too long

  • I've ALWAYS loved you, Leon!!!

  • man.....this is can make ya misty...whew

  • I loved this song the very first time I heard it, I still love it. So much feeling. Thank you Leon.

  • Sorry, but where's you're progression ? HARDIN*G hehe

  • Recently Leon was In Yucca Valley at Pappy and Harriet's.

I wish he had been in Palm Sprins...I would have taken him to dinner.

  • a wonderful song. ♥

  • Love you Leon, when I was a baby at 2 years old, I heard you thanks to my mom, now at 38, I know... tears come to my eyes each time I hear your voice.....

  • @FireOnTheWire - I'm 38 to and thank God for parents with great taste huh? This reminds me of my Dad, who I lost a year ago...it rips my heart out.

  • A Tulsa original. Like other things I have found in my short time in Tulsa. Another reason to love this town and the people.

  • @MrDeano57 Ever heard of Tony Mathews? Check him out--ConditionBlue/Alien in my own Home--He's an Oklahoma man who should be a household name.

  • Hey veeseee128 shut your fu ckin mouth dude my wife is black too there is nothing wrong with that you racist piece of shit and oh yea Leon Russell Is the greatest muscian of our time and any other time that has been or ever will be he is The Master Of Time And Space

  • best version.....leon sings his song the way he feels it!!!

  • Oh wow...loving on this

  • I love you in a place where there is no space and time.....

  • Though I like the Ray Charles version is really good. The original is still the very best. Just a soulful feel.

  • Oh, I'm glad you're back. This studio version has always been my favorite. I've missed you!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this song was my Fav. in the 70's I had all of his records! :) Great

  • Watched this a few days ago & thought it was a wonderful video to send to my sister, who means everything to me. Had a hard time finding your version again. Thank you so much.

  • Man o man I love this song!!

  • Dear friend, your video is breathtaking with the romantic song and the

    wonderful and rare images. Memories.

    Congratulations on your excellent creation!

Thank you so much for sharing.

Have a happy time! God Bless! Ŀ☼√Ξ ღƸ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Ingrid

  • Wow - Leon is coming to London - can't wait to see him on 27th June !! Last time I saw him was at the Rainbow in 1971. He's still as great as ever -and still my all time favourite. He so deserves his place in the Rock & Roll Hall of fame !!

  • love love love leon

  • Thanks for sharing

  • Someone just dedicated this song to me ;-)

  • who originally wrote a song for you?was it russel or hathaway?

  • @LostTheTrain this song was written and originally performed by leon. this is not his best version,in my opinion, check out the version listed as leon russell and friends 1971 here on youtube. donny hathaway couldn;t carry leon's jock strap, read his bio on the rock and roll hall of fame website.

  • This is a decent version of the song but in my opinion donny hathaway is better. They way he sings is full of so much emotion that it makes you feel everything he is saying and by the end of the song you might be crying. I cried the second time I heard it.

  • Best love song ever.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've always wished Leon was singing his song to me.........

  • It's about time they inducted this man into the R&R HALL OF FAME. Elton John did a great job introducing him. I didn't know Leon had gone through brain surgery for 5 1/2 hours. God Bless Him.

  • @jimbronxny Amen Brother............

  • I love His voice I

  • @laggie24 I agree with your thoughts, there is something we take for ourselves in our dear songs (-:

  • T-love you all I my life...YOU are a FRIEND of mine....do you understand finally?

One of the greatest songs ever written..so honest, so raw, so tender..it still sometimes hurts..after all these years....Love you Leon Russel ,Thank you for your song.

  • @kate54ish beautiful song... He is amazing..Love u for recognizing his music

  • I think when listening carefully to the words many out there surely will have a thought or two of their own.

The melody is also fantastic ... even just humming it ... so peaceful!

  • Everytime I here this song...It still makes me cry. Doesn't matter if it is Leon, Willie, or Stevie. Thank you, Leon, and all the others.

  • LEON RUSSELL/A Song For You

    この歌は、カーペンターズでは、綺麗過ぎる。このオリジナルが、ずっしり来る…。

  • Leon could sure play that steinway. one of my alltime favorites. Huichol53

  • Thank you!!! His version is somethin' like 'more free, and I really feel the music like a flow of water'. ^_^

  • So beautiful. I've been in love with Leon singing this song since it was released in 1970. Follow those notes, perfectly sung. Master of Space and Time. Yes.

  • @zo219 me too...he has a sound that goes in my ear and right to my heart & soul...

  • Leon did a great job of writing and singing this song and though it's been covered by many different artist, "NO ONE" came even close to Donny Hathaway's version of this song. Donny's voice and vocals are crystal clear and pure perfection.

  • adore leon...he was my very first 'crush' ...at 13

  • @librarjd good taste! :)

  • roberto dresia

    love this song

  • This beautiful song has been covered to death for 40 years. Only two versions count: This one and that of Ray Charles. The rest are... insignificant.

  • @tukabl I agree with you, but check out Kenny Rankin's version. Kenny brings a new spin to everything he does.

  • @tukabl ,let's face it,it's tough gig to be compared to the original writer and singer, and being compared to Ray Charles ain't a walk in the park, either. After all,he's Ray Charles.

  • sing it leon

  • "Love" If you have it you don't need anything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter what else you have" Because life without love, there is no life.

Check out the videos I have posted about the love I have lost, and everything else it cost me. Love of my life Laura, and it's a 4pt series.

  • This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Mr. Russell and Mr. Hathaway's interpretations are formidable and flawless. Thank you both. I LOVE MOTOWN!

  • This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Mr. Russell and Mr. Hathaway's interpretations are formidable and flawless. Thank you both.

  • One of my favorite songs of all time....especially the lyric "I love you in a place where there is no space and time", wow, to be loved like that....wow.

  • Sounds so much like a Leo Sayer song

  • Thank you thank you so much for posting this!!!!

  • qué hermosa canción!

  • where there is no space in time......

  • His voice may not be as smooth as some people prefer, but he sings with "heart" ...and my heart responds!!! He wrote from his heart. How can you not feel it? I Love me some Leon!!!! Peace and Blessings...

  • Love the song...Donny Hathaway owns this one tho..

  • @saffyre915 The Temptations did it better, They have a version of their 25th Anniversary CD that was live from Japan and they absolutely killed it!

  • Simply one of the best and as far as this song is concerned: IS the best.

Let's not confuse auto tune with heart.

  • i'm shocked. i did not know this written by him. I love this version. comes from his heart. I can listen to this song sung by anyone and get same chills. I thought this was by Donny Hathaway. amazing.

  • @lena15206 ,in MY opinion, what makes the version by Leon stand above all the others is it was written by the heart, and his heart is in his voice. Passion ain't supposed to be slick and smooth,it's supposed to have a little bit of a rough feeling about it.

Leon has a smoother sound on other songs, but he surely knew what he was doing on this one!

  • WOW..........profound song - words -and voice:=) luv u leon - u rock and so does this song:=)

  • I fucking LOVE HIS VOICE!!!! Maybe it's a Southern thang?! <3

  • Easily one of the GREATEST songwriters of all time. I bet he makes 5 times the royalties from his writing. The hits are many because of this man. The list is a long one and would surprise most people.

  • Raw emotion..

  • Just Leon and his Baldwin grand piano. Knocks me out every time I hear it.

  • Leon Russell sucks. Nobody can match the Divine Karen Carpenter.

  • Comment removed

  • @judecreek2 Why did you erase your comment? Merry Christmas to you.

  • @FlyingMondongo I'm not sure what comment you are referring to. But, if you ever saw Leon perform live, you'd never say he was a bad performer. Back in the 70's and 80's, he started every show by saying, "If you leave here tonight without feeling like you've had a religious experience, I"ll give you your money back." Nobody ever asked. He not only played piano and guitar, he danced, strutted, boogied on his piano top, "testified", interacted with the crowd, and left us wanting more. Always.

  • @judecreek2 You wrote: "Go away and stay there". I never saw Leon live, and I believe you: he was great on stage, but come on, open your ears, Leon is howling like a dog in a funeral. Forget KC version and go through Ray Charles, he is superior (piano included). Ray Charles reads the song, Leon it's a nightmare. I want my money back.

  • @FlyingMondongo You have your opinion, and I have mine. However, why return to a video just to criticize it? There are thousands of artists and their songs that I don't personally care for, but you won't find any negative comments from me to piss off their fans. So, I stand by my comment--go away and stay there.

  • @judecreek2 That's what I thought. Happy New Year to you.

  • @FlyingMondongo Ah, but if Leon really sucked.. you wouldn't have the Karen Carpenter version. Because if he REALLY sucked.. he never would've written the song.

  • @teddibearsworld You're right. Leon is a good composer and a bad performer.

  • @FlyingMondongo Everybody has a right to an opinion. Peace.

  • @teddibearsworld Merry Christmas to you.

  • @FlyingMondongo I agree with teddibearsworld- Leon Russell wrote this great song and did it first. When people decide to rate versions of a song against each other, at least recognize that it's far easier to remake something already done by someone else, than it is to create something on a blank canvas.I personally like Donny Hathaway's version, but I will always feel the creator and originator rates due credit.

  • @emmettk Leon has all the credit for this great song, but not always the author does the best version.

  • @FlyingMondongo agreed.

  • .so after everyone has finally cleared out-and its me and my guitar-i think of those that have come and gone..and those that were close-then far..i couldn't record it..but this hippy said it best..and i miss her still..........

  • I've always wished that Leon was singing' his song for me...

  • Corection, meant to say Whitney was on crack while making the film The Bodyguard... Of course Dolly has always been a winner.. not a loser like Whitney. My bad Dolly just a mistake ... Sorry...

  • @budmanx hey your the one that said or insinuated that Whitney said that..im just saying thats bullshit..lol..they called and asked to use the song..its a must..no need to insult here...it shows your intelligence level my insulting..look around a bit...sheeeeesh..and you are a pro huh,...whatcha got?...lets see it..or hear it..but guess what your profile is gone???..lol..some folk just hate to be called out..

  • just a pure great song!

  • One of my very favorite renditions... Leon is awesome!

  • Leon Russell gets my respect for writing an absolutely brilliant song.....but I'm sorry. Donny Hathaway executes WAY better.

  • @cwes478 Good story.

  • I'd forgotten how great this song was! If not for CBS Sunday this morning, it would still be gone from memory. Wonderful...way better than today's music offerings.

    Leon Russell Rocks!

  • For sweet Louise.....................

  • keithw083...do you even have a clue dude? I think not. Play the Carpenters version and don't insult true music lovers again.

  • @bperkins1956 you are so right... That idiot Keithw083 probably doesn't even know Leon Russell created this masterpiece and was of course the original artist. Absolutle classic. But Karen Carpenter was special too and just one of many artists who recorded this great Leon Russell classic....

  • This is the worst version i ever heard of this song! I would never play this to other people without them laughing

  • @keithw083 What rock did you crawl out from under? It's unfortunate when classless people have to fart in church or drunks throw up at a wedding... You remind me of another dumb person. Whitney Houston was shopping in a mall with some of her friends when she heard Dolly Parton's recording of" I'll Always Love You", Whitney's big hit from movie The Bodyguard and she said "what's that bitch doing singing my song?" Then one of her friends told her, It's not your song Whitney, SHE WROTE IT!

  • @budmanx stoooooooop...lol..for one, you have to get rights to a song in order to do it.. 2) the rights of the song are given on the LP,3 dolly done that song long before Whitney,no record co. is that dumb to do that, its called a lawsuit and a half..they ask for permission and give a percentage of money to the writer..lol..hence: "Whitney knew who wrote it"...lol..know your facts before speaking, you never know who you will run into on the tube.."wink"...

  • @ltuomela Wow... I've read about how our schools are turning out people who are really ignorant but actually feel like they are really smart. But I've never met one until you came along. So here goes... First of all ASCAP protects the song writers and performing artists by collecting a royalty each time a copywriten song is played, performed or recorded. Whitney did not record Dolly's song before making "The Bodyguard" and the music Producer created the soundtrack. Dolly was on crack..duh.
