I play guitar. You should go ahead and get the expensive stuff, it wouldn't matter as long as you're not clumsy or careless and step on it or something. They're pretty sturdy. Always start off with a steelstring acoustic. That way, when you move on to other guitars, it will be an easy transition. I wouldn't pay anything over $500 for my first guitar.
