  • wondering why the watchtower basement key, used to imprison havel is in the hands of andre of astoras petrified body atop the moonlight butterflies tower.. with andre being just a blacksmith, (and i think he is intertwined somehow in the story), is it possible he could have something to do with Havels imprisonment? the basement key also implies that havel was 'turned' hollow. I think his humanity was stolen, and i also have a hunch that Reah steals humanity(possibly from Havel as well).

  • Honestly, I think Petras just resented Raea. It's why he abandoned her and why he later kills her if the option is available. He thought she was weak, spoiled, naive and worthless. He was sent away to a hellish land in order to protect her and he clearly hates her for it and his current situation.

  • Petrus could be a Darkwraith, there are broken red eye stones along with his equipment in the 4 chests near his location. And Oswald of Carim talks about him, so he probably pays Oswald to be absolved from sins so that he can switch covenant every time he wants.

  • maybe the woman in duke's archives is not Rhea....what do you think of that ?

  • epic i found the the hollowed corpse in the dukes archives before i met patches and he kicked me into the pit and Rhea was still down there with hollow vince and nico any thoughts

  • love this vid more lore for sure

  • "The Great Hollow" reminds me of the area in Demon's Souls , right before you encounter the true King Allant, They have the similar dead tree , woodland design , could they be possibly connected?

  • What you said about Reah being captured, I sort of have my own view on this. It's a little stupid and all speculation, but I think she chose to go there. I believe she was looking for information to right the things she blamed herself for. (Her guards being killed) Like Seath wanted the books to find the scales of immortality, I believe she wanted to use a power like that. But lost her mind as she couldn't find it. She felt this change and locked herself in the cell.

  • more please

  • Northernlion brought me here :)

  • EXTREMELY interesting bit of information: "Vereor Nox," means, "fear the night," in Latin. Members of the Way of White will say this to you as you leave. What does this mean? You decide.

  • @AntoninusPious Miracles seem to be mostly connected to sunlight/the sun, whereas sorcory is often moon related. Thus Way of the White members would fear the "night" because the sun is not present at night.

  • @AntoninusPious In Dark souls dark areas are often harder than normal area IE compare the Tomb of the giants vs Anor Londo

  • It might be worth noting that if you are killed by Petrus after having Reah back in the Undead Church and after exhausting dialogues with him, he willl say "Too bad for you, for I am a wolf in sheep's clothing". That would then seem like his main goal all the time was to deceive Reah and her bodyguards/classmates and perhaps even you.

  • Hey ENB, do you know WHAT the pendant does and have you translated the Japanese version of the game, for the pendant's description? Since it's wrong on the English version.

  • wait...... im not getting any of this...

  • Like how you managed to get the vid time to 13:37

I see what you did there

  • as the lords gains power through the first souls and oppose the dragons. The dragons thought of a last resort in which a furtive pygmy discovered the dark soul in order to bring back the age of ancients which is dark. Thus, the incomplete dragon primordial serpent kaathe awaited a potential undead who would one day become the dark lord preserving the world which was once before. Stealing all of man's humanities thus leaving them hollow and to correct the wrongs of the past, lords souls controlled

  • I think Petrus trades in souls because the more souls you get the more powerfull??

  • I love ur dark souls plot vids, don't stop! As for my analysis, I dont think petrus is a hollow mainly cuz in game he's very almost fearful of the player character who is an undead. Also the whole human world money thing. Plus if he was an undead don't u think he would've been driven hollow by the end if his story?

  • as an added note to your interesting theory about Petrus, he owns currency from the living world, such as copper coins and such. What would an undead need of these?

  • petrus never goes hollow though?

  • @YourfriendOmenBoy Also, the npcs in the game have a lot of dialogue, they're just easy to skip by. Many npcs also have their own 'questline' which are difficult to follow too but shed a lot of light on their backstory.

  • Ok. This is random, but why is Sen's Fortress titled that? Who is Sen? Why is Crestfallen Merchant there? Is the Crestfallen Merchant Sen?

  • @TurtTulStudios

I wondered about Sen too considering the entire fort is named after him. I like the idea the Crestfallen Merchant is Sen who managed to escape all the demons in the fortress by using his ultimate trick/trap by breaking the bridge himself once he'd got across and isolated himself to survive as his fortress is designed to be full and traps. He is slowly going insane on his own after losing his entire fortress but being such a strong and intelligent character keeps it together to

  • @gentlegiant80 help you and possibly save him as he would have to be one of the stronger and smarter characters as he controls the fortress and designed it. He is clearly strong as he has steel armour and smart as he presumably broke the bridge (how else could it have been broken?) Maybe once Ricard died he finally gave in and saved himself? Just an idea I don't have any evidence to support this but I really like your idea.

  • @YourfriendOmenBoy read the description...

  • Seriously though.... I got no indication of ANY story in this game. So how the fuck did you guys get all these character names and shit, when they weren't even said in the goddamn game?!

  • Not sure if this has been said, BUT, i had sinned and was on my way to request absolution, and i decided to try the "Talk" command when talking to the guy who is in the bell tower after the gargoyles, (sorry i can't remember his name), but anyway, he confirms that petrus is responsible for Rhea's death, as he says, "Have you met petrus of thorolund, i wager you would have much in common, for is he not too drenched in sin, HEH HEH HEH HEH". Just thought i would share this in case.

  • f*ck'in Heineken Advert!!

  • i think the real mystery in dark souls is how your hip glows :P

  • @TheSuperrrtomas go balls deep on your ass, all i gotta say

  • i love these vids this game does a fucking well job to hide the story but its so fricking interesting lol great job deciphering all this XD

  • Could you make a video explaining the back story of Laurtrec?

  • Video length: 1337 ! Also, this is some real shit you're talking about, I agree with everything, as I've also researched a lot about the Dark Souls lore...

  • its amazing there can be this much back story and the game NEVER explains it. so frustrating

  • Note the video length. :P

  • 9:40

Petrus is not undead - I've no idea how people thought he WAS Undead to begin with. Firstly, he's a human NPC. I've never seen any Undead NPCs who can talk to the player in Dark Souls.

He also never uses Estus flasks, but he actually can cast a heal miracle when you hurt him. I invite you to check this video at about 38 seconds:

    youtube(dot)com/watch?v=8fzbBKMykaU&t=0m38s

  • @MichelKobayashi Most of the NPCs in Dark Souls are undead, if not all of them. You are failing to make the distinction between Human Undead and Hollowed Undead. The former can regain some measure of a human form to put the process of becoming hollow on hold. A living human would theoretically have infinite humanity under this system. Petrus being human or not is a tossup, but he would be one of the only living humans in the game.

  • @MetalSlimeHunt You're right, I totally wanted to say Hollow, not Undead. I'm stupid. Forget what I say about the undead stuff in my late post everyone.

  • @MichelKobayashi There's a female undead merchant by the shortcut that you have to open from firelink shrine to reach the depths. She talks to you, as does the other undead merchant on the lower level of undead burg.

  • @SwearingIsCaring I meant Hollow in my previous post. And there's 2 undead merchants actually.

  • Please do a video on the tomb of the giants and Nito and the gravelords!!!

  • Comment removed

  • PS: I'd like some feedback on my English!

  • Epic, I'm a huge fan of your videos, and I've seen people asking for advice in the comments, so I thought it'd be a good thing for me to do.

Anyay, let's get to the point, I just turned 14, and there is some hair growing on my face. Today I noticed that it was visible, and i tried to shave it off, but I got 4 cuts on my face.

Is there any way you can help me? I don't like to talk to my dad about puberty, so can you comment as soon as possible?

  • P.S. I killed Petrus right from the get-go ^_^

  • Thumbs up if you're listening to this while playing Dark Souls.

  • I LOVE this lore. Keep up the videos.

The game has an epic story. The fact it is up to the player to interpret it only makes it better.

  • do more of this

  • I never really joined the way of white because I made my character to be purely melee, thought I pussed out a little bit halfway through it and started using pyromancy, but just for the great chaos fireball.

  • Wait... Havel is a bishop? You mean that big dude that can one shot you with a dragon's bone/tooth/whatever the size of a horse is a pirest? Holy crap.

  • @Sperium3000 Not only does he touch little boys. but gods themselves.

  • @Sperium3000 The funny thing is, back in the day when priests back in the day could become knights, it was only a sin if you drew blood, so they used blunt weapons to break their opponents bones and cause internal trauma, and the dragon's tooth is fairly bloody blunt. :P Unsure if it is intentional or not, but I found it a pretty awesome touch in the game.

  • @NightF101 If they thought about that then it's pretty clever. But I don't think a blunt weapon will kill a guy without taking blood. I mean, if you bash a dude's face in or whak him in the knee, chances are there will be some amount of blood. Or brains in the former's case.

  • some very interesting stuff love it

  • I appreciate this video series to no end. Dark Souls has become my favorite game ever and I love lore talk ... I'm a hardcore lore nerd, lol!

  • This has probably already been posted, but it's confirmed that Leeroy's trip into the Catacombs failed because he appears as a hollow spirit just before Nito's room.

  • @Mayhemzz He also appears as a phantom (helpful) just before Pinwheel. Why he's friendly before invading you I don't even.

  • It shows in the dynamic way of the white theme that Petrus doesnt go through in killing Reah

  • look how long the video is! epic!

  • yes do more of these videos please :)

  • HOWEVER, comma, Nito is the "first of the dead", so logic could dictate that Nito must be the Church' s enemy. SSOOO .. in a way, a Puppeteer Gwyn may be possible.

  • Out of all nine covenants, Chaos worships the Witch of Izalith, Sunshine scouts=Lord Gwyn, and the Gravelords=Nito.

If Lloyd's teachings ibcluded Gwyn, then the Witch and Nito would've also been referenced in the dialogue in a positive light...

  • This may just be speculation on my part, but wouldn't Velka be a "ancient lord" if the "Gods" included Gwyn and Co.? Perhaps there is a second pantheon headed by Allfather Lloyd?

  • Please make more of these videos!!!

  • Worth looking into is whether or not being undead is the natural state of things as the power of the First Flame fades. If you're looking for a reason why things die, I'd blame Nito. Have no idea what it means when his Lord Soul says most of its power was given to Death, but that's as good an explanation as any : things don't die on their own. Going Hollow is losing hope and insanity in the face of immortality, and the rest of death is a gift of the First Flame, via Nito.

  • Primary thing : assuming Gwyn has some master plan is futile, as he is hollow in the Kiln of the First Flame. He gave up all his power to link the fires, and that's why he is called the Lord of Cinder. He's just burnt out. Fairly certain it's his body that becomes the bonfire you link at the end, just like the other bosses. Secondly, it's important to note that it is likely Gwyn who imprisoned his old battle companion, Havel, in the watchtower basement (see watchtower basement key).

  • keeeep goin pleasee!!!

  • My guess is that this isn't the first time Petrus had to help pilgrims, being there on holy mission for a long time and finally snapped, entertaining himself by dooming people he already thinks will fail.

  • i do not belive that gwyn is a member of way of the white because soliar wishs to follow in his footsteps as a sunlight warrior to find his own sun as gwyn did also in new game+ you can offer gywns soul to the covenant to obtain the sunlight spear miracle wich i would assume thats means gwyn either was a sunlight warrior or created the covenant

  • When does Petris talk to laurtec?

  • one of your next videos should be about the darkwraiths

  • hmmmm if havel is a bishop, and dont bishops use mericals, then y doesnt havel ude them because havel hates sorceries not mericals

  • i killed andrie and i dont know how to upgrade a weapon to plus 10 for boss weapons can anyone help

  • the witcher 2 or dark souls what should i buy?

  • @leoskoglund Both of Coarse!

I would go with Dark Souls 1st though

  • According to the Item Description of an Estus Flask: Clerics can also use Estus! Undead can mimic it. ->Petrus does not necessarily have to be an undead!

  • Hey Epic, off topic I know and you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but have you found any actual or possible usages for the pendant in the game?

  • So you speak Japanese? Are you like an American living in Japan or something?

  • @spicandspamful Yes he is exactly like that,... ^_^

  • I enjoy these lore videos very much keeping them coming! I sadly lost my Dark Souls copy and have no speculation to add. My lost copy has depressed me into simply stalking these videos. KEEP THEM COMING!!

  • 13:37 minutes long you are the clear winner

  • I am interested.

  • Great video! Really interesting, MOAR PLEASE :)

  • @EpicNameBro

I find all of this extremely interesting. The more the better/cover it all/as much as you can/know, approach. There so much, and maybe even more so, so spread out, that it can be very hard to get a good grasp of it all. See all the connections/make all the pieces of the puzzle fall in place. Videos like these are invaluable when it comes to lore like this. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to make them. Much appreciated!

  • Including the player.

  • All the existing NPCs in the game are undead (some of them are hollow, others become hollows), but I agree that the fact Petrus uses estus is interesting.

  • Your videos are interesting as hell, please, keep them going!

  • Id love to see, some Warrior of sunlight lore, or gravelords! This video was great man!

  • plz make more!!! this is amazing

  • the length of this video is 13:37, need i say more?

  • Paladin Leeroy is the only guy in Way of White i dont despise, LOLOLZ

  • the girl whos spirit is in the bed of chaos

  • Love the videos man, keep it up :D

  • more plot, i was wrong about soo much that i want more =3

  • No idea if this has been posted yet, but how Reah got to dukes can be found in the description for the sens fortress cage key.

"If a hapless adventurer becomes fatigued during an imprudent attempt to overcome the fortress, the serpent men will not kill him, but lock him up in a lonely cage. Eventually, unless they have forgotten, they drag the victim off to who-knows-where."

Remember the lizard men in the Dukes Prison? Yup. So, Rhea tried to go through sens (to anor londo?) and got captured.

  • @SBCurley Wait, arent there Manserpents in the cell area of TDA? Holy connection, batman!

  • @SBCurley So what about Logan? He was captured at Sen's and I freed him. Next time I see him he's in TDA in a cell. Did he get captured again at Sen's?

  • @Swash74 I think griggs says something about Logan leaving to learn more sorceries or something, so He probably went after Seath and was defeated, and put in a cell, just like you.

  • @SBCurley thanks for saying that, i saw it too :)

  • Will you do more of these videos? I'd like to see some more lore, even on Demon souls. I began playing at Dark souls so I always was curious how demon souls ties in.

  • @swe123swe Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are actually unrelated. They have some cameos, but that's it. I will be doing at least one or two more lore vids, and I may continue longer depending on how much people are interested.

  • @EpicNameBro I don't believe that to be honest. Remember the broken archstone in Demon's Souls? Remember how it was the land of giants? Well guess what Lordran has?

Also, I believe Gwyn is the reason the archstone was broken. He started the age of fire and the archstone was destroyed cutting off Lordran from the other archstones.

It kinda makes sense, and the only reason it wasn't named Demon's Souls 2 was because it was multiplatform.

  • @EpicNameBro Well if everyone else is like me, I fucking love these videos, and would love to see more in the future, keep up the good work.

  • @swe123swe As Epic already said DS doesn't tie into DkS at all... but I just wanted to comment that dude DS is a fantastic game... if you like DkS, then for God's sake go out and get DS! It is just a GREAT game and in some ways is better than DkS... but overall it is not better

  • loyds tailisman, gold silver and copper coins

  • Actually Oswald says to the player that Petrus "Too is drenched in sin" as in you and petrus are drenched in sin, not that he is not to drenched in sin.

  • favorite video on youtube

  • What a great video length!

  • Why is the sunlight altar destroyed?

  • @gareth9x the altar statue is Solaire, and I assume it was broken after he lost his God status. Speculation btw

  • Oswald might be saying petrus is not too drenched in sin because he is doing the right thing. The clerics are trying to link the fire and petrus may be trying to prevent them from doing that. Therefore Oswald saying petrus isn't drenched in sin could mean that he agrees with what petrus is doing. More evidence that the link the fire ending is actually bad.

  • I think maybe Petrus is there to see that Rhea and her companions don't make it out of the catacombs, or maybe he sees to it on account of distaste for royalty. Perhaps he has a deal with patches before to kill the clerics that enter the catacombs, since patches clearly tries his best to kill you if you say you are a cleric, and even if you don't. It seems to me that petrus, being older, has led many clerics into the catacombs and to the same fate.

  • Thorolund Talisman item description says it's only granted to high-ranking clerics, and yet it Petrus just sells you one. Why is he carrying extra?

Also, guess who else sells you Thorolund Talisman? Patches, who obviously looted it from some Cleric he probably had killed.

It's possible Petrus had a comrade die and he took the talisman with him, nothing suspicious about that, but why does he care so little for it that he just sells it to some undead for pocket change?

  • Interestingly, Oswald of Carim mentions Petrus, and even says how he is "not too drenched in sin" or something like that. How does Oswald know Petrus and how much he has sinned? Possibly Petrus has requested absolution from Oswald before, to cover up previous crimes? How many undead pilgrimagers has Petrus left to die before?

  • Sunlight Altar??

  • keep it up bro. these vids are fantastic.

  • Awesome videos! Make more please

  • what does the pendent do i still don't know

  • Moar analysis please Epic, love the lore of this game!

I don't know how you do it, but this channel just keeps getting better, thanks bro.

  • Keep it up Epic! Also, instead of just thinking about thing's that aren't handed out straight to the player, you should collect all the lore readily avalible and summarise it. For example, Lloyd talsmins stuff, all that goodness and how it all connects, before how it immediately translates to the game.

  • Anyone want to trade me 6 demon titanite, for whatever You ask for, message me for more info and deals.

    Thanks :D

  • what happens if you kill petrus early in the game? does Rhea still die somehow?

  • @wehadagoodlife Rhea turns hostile as do her protecters, so if they aren't already there, or haven't journeyed into the catacombs yet, they'll fight you and their story won't continue. The time I killed him that kept Rhea alive but not hostile was when she went into the chapel, but before traveling to two other locations, which means Petrus may be considering murder, but you can kill him before he commits it, and Rhea won't mind because Petrus made his intentions clear.

  • @therewillbepain So there is a way! I really like her character i felt bad having her die on me so I wanted to keep her alive :P

  • this plot stuff is awesome man you deffs gotta keep finding this stuff out

  • i must know of the PENDANT! its driving me crazy.... although the more i dig into it, i think its just a torturous gift that From Software threw into the game just to drive people like me into an insanely psychotic rage....From Soft is sadistic after all.

  • @QuanticBlitzStudio I think the Bonfire in Land of the Giants ,the place you're in is to the left of the NPC called Patches, down the ladder.I havent done it myself.

  • great vid man, very informative, complete speculation ( i could be wrong, if so please tell me) it has to do with the fact that rhea has a pendant. there is some further speculation that the pendant is connected to the furtive pygmy. is it possible that petrus knows this and that is the reason he kills rhea?

  • @QuanticBlitzStudio there's definitely a video somewhere showing you how to get to the first bonfire in that area too

  • @QuanticBlitzStudio You can use the sunlight maggot (from poor Solaire), the lantern (drop from the necromancer dudes in catacombs) or the sorcery 'cast light' to make that place much easier :) Sorry if you knew that and it's still hard... try ranging the crawling enemies? Actually you can probably run past a lot of that level, once you know where you're going

  • Can't wait for the Chaos Covenant's lore!

  • @QuanticBlitzStudio The first Catacombes bonfire is past the room with the first ladder down to the piles of bones room when you start the catacombes.Kill the necromancer there and the skeletons shouldnt respawn in that area anymore.Make you you have a Divine weapon in there otherwise skeletons will keep rising from the dead, unless you kill all the necromancers.

  • I think a video about Lautrec of carim will be good. Much speculation about him, why was he caged in the undead parish? Might he be Gwyns son? He gives out sunlight medals. Why does he want to kill the fire keeper?

  • @QuanticBlitzStudio Just keep leveling up your weapons and armour and the bosses become so much easier. All you then have to do is learn when to attack ,when to run and when to dodge.

  • hey epic

you ever considered doing a level 1 playthrough of the game?

i'm doing one myself, even though i have yet to finish the game with my normal level 80 character.

but i have to say that i enjoy the level 1 game a lot more than the normal game, probably due to the fact that i have to watch out more and plan things

anyway, keep up the good work!

  • An interesting thing to note in the White Seance Ring description. It says it belongs to the Head Bishop of the Way of White and apostle TO All Father Lloyd. As in, the ring does not belong to Llyod at all, but to a different person who is apparently Llyod's right-hand man. This person is also evidently the one in charge of the Way of White, not Llyod. That's speculation of course, because there's no documentation stating that the head Bishop is in charge. It could still be Llyod.

  • I don't know if it's already been said but I talked to the bishop at the 1st bell tower. And he said Petrus and I were alike and that Petrus is drowned in sin or something like that.

  • The pendant can't be properly discussed until it's description gets corrected or confirmed, otherwise it's just another "sun medal".

  • Speculation: Didnt Artherias (the abyss walker) Abandon this covenant when he got corrupted ?? by the Darkwraith ?

  • The video was cool, but for those of us who haven't played, showing a picture of the character your discussing would help out a lot, thanks again.

  • I want to hear the lore for the princes of sunlight, and seeth gettin it on :O

  • Dude thank you for a speculative video like this, sorry I'm late on posting but I wanted to suggest this, but you being the genius that you are you beat me to it. Much live from philly keep it up.

  • Great video, man. First video response I've done. I've read all that I can read about Dark Souls lore and I'm curious what you think Seathe is crushing in the intro video. Its obvious that he has betrayed the dragons, but not obvious how he did so. Nothing in Dukes Archives seems to explain this, unless playing some smooth R&B music is the key to a dragons heart.

  • Completely agree on Petrus, never really liked the guy...

  • And there's the pendant again. What does it do? Is it used for anything? will we ever find out!? Loved the video Epic! Keep the vids coming. God I love the soul franchise!

  • I don't have any speculation to add, I just wanna ask you to please, PLEASE, make more of these lore vids. I've done 5 thorough playthroughs of this game and can't even begin to make sense of most of the stuff going on, and this vid actually helped quite a bit.

  • This was great. I got lost sometimes but it was still great! you see I never got Dark Souls but i was seriously considering it and love the lore! Keep em comin.

  • ok this is my speculations with a few facts thrown in in the beginning cinematic it says Gwyn the lord of sunlight so imo (and the lightning bolts that you can only get with said covenant) he directly has nothing to do with the way of white but maybe Kingseeker Frampt created the way of white as a way to aid lord Gwyn and release him from his curse so Darkstalker Kaathe made the Darkstalker covenant to go against what Frampt was trying to achieve and keep a DARK lord

  • It was werry informative! :))

  • You should try and put your in-game sources in the video for people who haven't obtained the items, read a lot of the descriptions, etc.

  • @OlympusOdysseus I would like to, but it's a matter of time. I'll be changing the format up a bit for the next vid, but it still won't be perfect.

Ideally I want to show every item and dialogue I talk about in the vid, but I decided to just ask people to use the links in the description to save myself the hours of recording, editing, etc., that I would need to do.

  • Did anybody notice that this video is 1337?

    Seriously look at it's length.

  • Comment removed

  • Also, MOAR.

And that dark tower in undead burg, I noticed that long ago I would love to explore that whole great wall.

  • Keep epic naming, bro.

  • man dark souls is good and all, but if you understand basic japanese, and have a copy of ni no kuni, why arent you playing that instead?

  • @Jackalofdeath I am playing it, but I can't upload it (copyright)

  • @EpicNameBro that sucks! :(

  • When I first played Dark Souls, and saw my character looking like a mummy, I thought holy shit, he looks just like the old monk without his clothes. In Dark Souls you start off in an asylum and the level for the old monk for starts off in a prison no? tower of latria? I thought there was some connection. Then I met patches, at the tomb of the giants in dark souls. In Demon souls, there was a broken archstone that was supposed to take you to the land of the giants. unrelated the video though :(

  • I was thinking, what if solaire is actually gwyn searching for his son (the firstborn)? In one of the dialogues(in lost izalith) he says "my dear sun",which would be more logical to be "my dear son".

  • Epic, you are so great! You care so much about your subscribers, and make so high quality videos. Love this story speculation. You erned evry subsrciber, and I hope u get MANY more ;)

  • Just thinking on what you saris on petrus manet it was all planned out because he is human or not hollow or whatever.he probably didn't want to be apart of any of this so he used patches to dispatch vince and nico, so rhea is alone making her able to kill so he wouldn't have any one kill him.I don't that's just my opinion

  • I would very much enjoy more of these videos. It's more to do with I have the same thoughts as you about these things so I feel less crazy, lol. It's also nice hearing another person input on the foundations of the lore that we know are 100% as well and not just, as you said, "trusting the wiki" as an end of all answers/speculations. (: Good stuff, thank you. <3
