Great review of the game! I really loved that game in its time. I used to play it while listening to Harold Budd's White Arcade album. My girlfriend later thought that the White Arcades was the soundtrack to the game!
I spent many an evening in that dungeon. It WAS creepy. Notwithstanding the graphics "primitive-ness" of the game compared to today's games, it was and is a gaming tour-de-force.
@paulrichard10 thanks for that great comment mate. It was a great game and one you could easy spend a LOT of hours in. I think the game had great atmosphere too and would be quite creepy when you came across monsters in there! Cheers glad you enjoyed my video ;o)
I loved this game. Don't think I got very far though. I remember there was these mushroom things you had to fight, then when you killed them you got to eat them. Btw what is it about old games that there's always apples and bread etc just lying about in random places. Would you eat bread that was lying in the corner of an old dungeon? Hehe... There probably just wasn't enough memory left to make a table or a bread bin for them to sit on.
@anonbeliever1 Yeah you got to love random food! Like you say I bet it was all dsonw to memory on the systems? They should have had more edable creatures instead ;o)
Wow, I didn't realize Atari had this game as well. I played Dungeon Master on the Super Nintendo, back in the day. I wouldn't mind seeing a modern-day version released, preferably for ALL the new gaming systems, including the Wii.
Ah dungeon master! I kept searching for Atari dungeons and dragons... but saw nothing. This game though, was excellent. The start was my favourite part, there were hidden passages, and you could get secret heroes to join your team.
The rune spell system was brilliant, I remember every item in this game.. feels good just to see this game being played.
@Blahdabbadoo Thanks for the feedback, and glad you liked the video. It was a good game back in the day for sure. Its aged a bit now but still pretty playable... cheers dude ;o)
great game. Had it for the tg-16 cd. I dont normally like dungeon crawlers at all, but this and eye of the beholder are my top choice. this is a good game, beholder I think is probably harder.
@SparklesofUnity Cool stuff dude thanks. Ive never played the eye of beholder but it does look cool. Will defo have to check it out one day? Cheers ;o)
It was far from the "first realtime 3D RPG". Many PC RPG's going all the way back to Elder Scrolls Arena had that. I could quote dozen of titles that did. Dungeon Master was a great game, so their is no need to lie about it. The truth is good enough.
I finished the game, but I remember something about a door with a red letter "E" sign that I never opened (from what I remember). Where did the door lead?.
@interghost damn, I wish I would have spelled shit properly, now I just look like a douche. Thanks for posting this, it brings back loads of memories. There is a free version available to download on the net, able to edit levels and such. Kinda cool. goes by the name of RTC (return to chaos) or something..
@EvilDobermann Its a classic game for sure. My fav game from back in the day was Bards Tale. If you've not played it give it a try! Cheers for the comments ;o)
a little bit of structure in your reviews would be nice. One second your showing the game, next your showing us a magazine ad for it, next your back at the game, next a wikipedia page, ect. Do the review first, then put all the extra stuff at the end, since most would rather skip through it. Other than that, I enjoyed your review. This game bings back fond memories.
@Aspenly ha ha ok points taken but I disagree. I think that my videos have a lot more structure than most game reviews on youtube. The main reason I put the other bits in is to stop it being just like all the others of hundreds of game reviews on here? Thanks for the feedback but I like the way I do things cheers ;o)
haha, i was just this morning saying something similar to my wife, the problem is we never know how good we have it until its gone.. if i knew what a golden age of computing the atari and amiga was back then i would have savoured every second of it.. but when ur a kid (13 in 1990) you just think summer days last forever :) without DM there would certainly be no WORLD OF WARCRAFT the references and direct influence is everywhere.. great review man.. thanks for sparking a few moments of nostalgia.
@sheepthehack no problem mate, the reason I do these videos is fr great comments like that. Im glad if its taken you back to the old days and made you remember a few things! Its so true, when your parents say these are the best years of your life you neve beleive them ha ha... now Im saying the same to my sons! Strange isnt it? Cheers ;o)
Great review! To be honest, I even might wanna play the game! I like those little old DOS gems, even I hadn't have access to a computer in those days. But they are still worthwhile checking out even today, in the days of WOW and Crysis.
Thanks for that video. DM was one of the greatest gaming experiences I ever got.
And it included already all the RPG features we love until today, party, items, puzzles, secrets, spells, weapons, equipment, skills, leveling, magic, different monster types and so on. I still cant believe it took only 1 disk - I played it for months, the level maps were partially extremely complex with their real-time puzzles and action, secret doors and hidden buttons. A ground-breaking game in every aspect.
Great comments mate thanks. Im glad you liked the review. It was a great game and I too spent hours of my youth wondering around those dungeons ha ha!
It was a great game and still plays ok today too. Thanks for watching cheers ;o)
I loved this game on my old Atari. I was only able to beat the game after getting a disk of "Champions" with maxed attributes. I used to draw out the maps on graph paper, (I did the same for Questron, Wizard's Crown and Eternal Dagger
It was a huge game mate. A lot of these games were too hard for me as a kid. But if you go back to them now a days they arent as hard, but still take a fair bit of time! Cheers ;o)
yeah, playing games like EOB 2 back in the day were fun but confusing. Even trying it now its confusing saving the game and then coming back to it, remembering where you were and what you were doing in the labyrinthian levels.
I will check them out. Do you remember a similar game called bloodwych? The graphics weren't as good as DM or Chaos Strikes back but the gameplay was similar.
Couldn't agree more - even now, it stands as my favaourite game of ALL time. Nothing even comes close. I even bought the follow up pack on eBay about 10 years ago but never managed to get it to work on my old machine! lol.
Can't believe they're updating it, wow! It says a lot about the old ST version, that the 360/PS3 will have to be at the top of their game to beat the original.
Thanks for the review, I remember that huge empty room at the end, it was absolutely terrifying! :)
Im glad you enjoyed the review. YEah I agree the game is great fun. It was really in depth at the time. The way you collected items etc. I even had it on the SNES which was quite a good version too! Cheers ;o)
Great vid as always mate. The only game I really remember playing to death on the ST was 'North & South'. I think thats what it was called, it was an American Civil War game. Fancy reviewing it? : )

Very nice review, DM was amazing, I was so fascinated by that game.
I had the original of course, but I also had a pirate disk with 3D Pool, DM, and Oids - that was an incredible amount of gameplay for less than 1 mb.
You should try Captive as well, a lot like DM but I enjoyed it a lot more, probably my all time fave ST game.

The Atari ST is my fave gaming system EVER.
Mainly because I grew up with it and Dungeon Master was legendary back then in the late 80's.
It had an unique aura and me and my friends were playing it to death, to get the ultra exciting fight with the infamous Lord Chaos.
To me, it's the greatest A -RPG Ever and One of the most innovative and exciting games of all time !
All Hail F(aster) T(han) L(light) for making such a masterpiece a lot of people are reminding fondly
