As usual, Ed sets the standard for m.i. demos: great playing, good to great production values and insightful, clear communications. It's a real coup for BassGearMag to have him on their roster.
My only regret is that I can't currently afford a Clement bass and their prices will probably start rising as a result of this video!
yes, but you risk to destroy your fretboard because the strings hit the fretboard and not the frets like in a fretted bass... but if you didn't slap like a mad is good... search Pino Palladino, he used to slap a Musicman Stingray fretless
Well, you are correct - the tone is dark. But that doesn't have to do weight or resonance. It's the character of the wood and pickups.. The GWBII has a preamp right? And Ash has more high frequency response than this wood, Black Limba. So, your basic impression is right.
I'm 14 years old and I've been playing bass for 7 years now. I play jazz, rock, and a bit of slap. But my bass is getting old and I want a new bass...Do you have any recommendations on a bass for me?--my budget is 500 or less dollars :)
You did good. I play exclusively fretless and practice 2-4 hours a day. I will not own an unlined fretless. I owe it to the other musicians to play in tune.
The single-cut design is a way to give the neck extra strength and stability. This however is a bolt-on, so I'm not sure how much of that is achieved. The neck is stable though, and the B is great. Mainly, it's a design that a lot of people like. Some of the most expensive basses around are single-cuts. I am not a big fan, but I actually like the way Clement made it a little narrower. Some of those basses look like a Mahi-Mahi... (fish). No thanks.
Hey Ed, brilliant tone! Looking forward to a complete review. While I think of it, may I ask the obligatory "what strings were you using" question? Looked like flats, sounded like rounds...
Hi Ed, great review, but it's not really clear which comment you're responding to here. If you're responding to CodyCEngdal's comment, I think the normal procedure is to put @CodyCEngdal at the beginning of your response. If others agree/disagree, just vote me up or down. Thanks.
@ ahevle - I don't know what's up. I'm responding to individual comments like I always do, but my responses are not being connected to the comment..... Hopefully this one will.
Great job Ed!!!! Love your tone and playing, with any bass!!! Btw thnx for all the lessons - i have almost all your books!!! My favorite building walking bass lines!!!

Hi from Spain, Ed
I love your vids, great reviews!!
I only want to ask u things: what are the earphones you used to make this vid? have u ever used in ear monitoring in your gigs?
Thanks a lot

Thanks! I'm using regular Sony earbuds, nothing special. I have never used in ear monitors on a gig.

you do great vids, Ed!
That's a crazy top bout on that bass... I don't dig the sound of fretless, but it's all subjective.

Too heavy wood for my taste, doesn't seem to resonate enough, but who the hell cares about my 2 cents, haha
:-)
SimulacronX 2 years ago
Heavy? This bass weighs 7.3 pounds. It's very light and resonant in fact.
BassGuitarMag 2 years ago
Ohh... well I just outed myseld as being a technical "noob" then.
But the sound seems quite dark compared to the pulsating tone of my Ibañez GWBII with ash body...dunno...

Alright, thanks a lot for your comments.
The bass is really beautiful though, it's all a matter of taste too I guess.

Loving your HD new cam Ed!!!
BTW: What brand are those sick Precision pickups? I noticed they had 2 poles per string as Jazz PUP's do
JosephGallagher 2 years ago
They are Nordstrand P/J 5 string pickups. Yes, the slanted pole pieces are very cool!

That's such a wonderfully rich tone! I really like it.

Less than $500? Maybe look at a G&L Tribute L-2000.

I also can recommend you the L-2000 Tribute. I bought mine 2 months ago and never rued that. Great instrument!

I completely agree. I won't own a fretless without lines, but as a reviewer... I don't always have a choice. I did the best I could.

Yeah, singe-cut basses are always ridiculously expensive. Does this one break the mold?
unopepito06 2 years ago
clement basses arent as expensive as they look, but theyre still costly, but reasonably costly!
and to ed F. Once again your videos never fail to not impress me! great as tone!
elykoko 2 years ago
This bass costs $1500 because of the exotic wood and two pickups. Base price for a Clement fretless 5 is $1350.

What a cool-looking & nice-sounding instrument! Looking forward to the full review.
