definitely could see how this would wow people in 1929. marilyn miller was probably the first multi-talented superstar in talkies. not to mention the excitement of the "third all talking color ever made". and released just a couple months after the crash. republicans were still under the illusion that the free hand of the market would correct itself. hahahaha
@kerryincolumbus ~ because there's a historical context that makes this all that more interesting you dolt, this movie was released 2 months after the worst economic crash in american history. the 1920's were more idealistic to the upper class and hollywood, an overwhelming majority of americans didn't experience what was known as the "roaring 20's". it was republicans then, and it's republicans now who mock the suffering. fact.
and i mentioned miller's talent, get over yourself.
What a lovely lady and wonderful talent! I absolutely love her dancing. Wish we had films of her Broadway shows. Wild Rose in Sally was such a great and energetic number.
Whoever said Marilyn Miller couldn't sing? I still prefer the more effervescent, spontaneous Marilyn (see "All I Want to Do Do Do Is Dance" or her delightful number with Joe E. Brown), but this clip shows that she could hold her own singing operetta. This is romantic lyricism personified. And even Jeanette McDonald in her prime never looked lovelier. Thanks!
What a treat. Thanks so much.

You know, the name, "Marilyn," was a rare until Miller came along, then mom's named thousands of daughters after her.

@LazlosPlane ~ including marilyn monroe, (suggested by a movie exec) who when signing for the first time asked how marilyn miller spelled her name.
