for me, the astronaut realises that his ship cannot turn around, that they will not have enough fuel to land and take off again. he knows he has to stay if any of the others on the ship are going to survive so he ignores the radio and wistfully watches the ship leave him behind.

i feel the astronaut fled off the path to explore a little more than he should have and noticed the ship leaving. he tried so hard to get back to the ship so someone would notice him but he was so slow with the low gravity. then he sits up against a crater weeping as he watches the ship take off
