ok, this isn't that hard to play, not so wow, but it helps the band with the rythem, and if you'd drop the bass, the song would totally change in a negative way, maybe you should try to watch some basslines from rhcp for instance,

depends on the song.. some bass pieces are so ridiculously hard. I personally play both and i think most often bass is easier. BUT dont play it if you want to be a rockstar cause you will end up getting paid a paperclip and some lint after each gig.
