pepsico8, I disagree, it isn't "offhand". It isn't taking the mockery out of deaf people. The whole point of this joke is the irony with hearing people. Most hearing don't understand sign language so they need translation. When a hearing person sees signing he/she tries to guess what it means. It's not like as if he/she says "That looks stupid, let's make fun of it!" The point is what hearing people THINK sign language means when they see it for the first time! :) Something like that.

When you meet a hearing person and ask them to guess what meaning of a sign you do, they'll guess but most of the time they'll get it wrong because sign language is not very obvious or easy. It's like when a hearing person speaks and asks a deaf person to guess what they are saying - most of the time deaf people get it wrong (because lipreading is not always easy!). So, this is where the fun joke comes in and the "wrong" (ie. what hearing people guess) translation is put to show this point.
