  • in new york city channel 4 they used that theme for there local newscasts untill 1978

  • When this clip was in first run, it was in color & tape.

When this clip was aired on Friday, July 22, 1977, last day of our fourth complete week of five of summer school, the non-SLDC / personal version & school lunch menu courtesy of the Glendora District: Taco Treat w/Ground_Beef,_Cheese_&_Sauce, Shredded Lettuce, Spanish Rice, Applesauce, Harvest Cake.

  • Day before my 8th birthday...lol.

  • @kitswf what's so funny about that? why the lol?

  • wouldnt crts overheat in the wall

  • Was the nightly news taped in Black & White or in color that year?

  • I also am collecting old news theme tunes of Japan.

  • "uh this is NBC Nightly News...

  • I guess he wasn't sure and made a guess.

  • LMAO!!!!

  • and yet someone born July 22 1977 is still young and will be for a while longer :)

  • I have seen the Nashville's WSM TV Ident for that split second before the intro in this.

  • Exactly 32 years ago today! A lot has changed.

  • I love the exact date.

  • nice, clean uncluttered open...

  • I have always wondered this, I've seen tons of old news TV footage and it has the same format, blacjk and white plus the network name, time and date. Who made these tapes? I've seen the 1968 Democratic convention with Dan Rather too with this exact format?

  • Vanderbilt Television News Archive

  • Yes, OldeYankee is correct, the archive at Vanderbilt University has been recording all national tv newscasts (and some other types of programming, IIRC) from all 3 (and later more) networks since 1968. Their practice has always been to superimpose the recorded time and date at the top of the screen (they later switched to color recording sometime in the late 70s-early 80s). Their recordings have been quite popular as file footage for later television documentaries, as you already know.

  • Also, you can see for a very brief moment at the beginning of the video a station ID for WSM-TV in Nashville (Vanderbilt's location), which indicates that this (and all of VU's other archive videos) were recorded off-air as well...

  • Gee, I remember where I was on this day in 1977: Lawrence, MA, on my way to the New Hampshire beach. Thank you for sharing this with us!

  • If you recall July 22, 1977, it must have been someone's birthday or anniversary -- or something really nice must have happened!

  • @PeerlessPaavo this was the date of the Johnstown, PA flood of 1977

  • @jdljdl1234 ... or something really bad must have happened. Sorry.

  • @PeerlessPaavo Actually it was the day after my 7th birthday. :-)

  • this was from the period when Chancellor and Brinkley co-anchored.. The network thought they worked so well together after seeing them anchor 1976 election coverage, they brought Brinkley back from the commentators chair to co-anchor. For a time, they both did the broadcast in NYC, but then they moved Brinkley back to DC, which made more sense. At some point they decided a single anchor could better take on Cronkite and Chancellor was solo again. This all happened between 1976-1980 as I recall.
