A different person, as she boarded, caught an error, which Joan will now check herself anytime she gets a ticket. The problem sounded like it was because the ticket said Joseph, not because the legal US Passport had "AKA" on it. They should have checked as Joan said but one would assume the flight would have been delayed had they done that. If there was time, they should have aided her. She'll now also carry more than a hundred bucks on her person. This could actually have happened to anyone.

If I had a ticket that had a different name from what was on my passport, I would not have been able to board. I could understand if some unidentified woman had a discrepancy with her ticket, but when somebody is so recognizeable, there is literally no excuse. They certainly knew who she was, they were just being babies about it.

So they would VERY WELL know who she was, and could call the Airline in New York and ask who she was.

Conflicting names is a security issue. There were 5 checkpoints for a reason - to crosscheck. The system worked. Now, there are 3 controls leaving the country, first comes the ticket counter where seat assignment is also given, then comes immigration, and right next to that is the security check point, where they go over your baggage but not your passport. Last, the gate before boarding . This is where she was stopped by the Continental agent . Her passport was checked TWO times not 3 or 4 or 5 times as she claims.

Not to be a dick but seriously, even though it goes against common sense I would say that all the others DIDN'T do their job and should have been noticed and fixed at the counter. The ONLY one who did their job was the women who didn't let her on the plane. The name didn't match the passport. If they paid attention earlier I am sure with her fame she would have gotten preferred treatment. Also, Sorry, they are not going to keep the airport open just for her. No sympathy for her ignorance.

A different person, as she boarded, caught an error, which Joan will now check herself anytime she gets a ticket. The problem sounded like it was because the ticket said Joseph, not because the legal US Passport had "AKA" on it. They should have checked as Joan said but one would assume the flight would have been delayed had they done that. If there was time, they should have aided her. She'll now also carry more than a hundred bucks on her person. This could actually have happened to anyone.

I've had companies fuck up and put my first name as Bobby, Bob, Rob or whatever, when my legal name is Robert. Never had any issues. She made it through FIVE checkpoints before someone said anything. They didn't even try to verify her identity, or fix their fuck up on her ticket.

The problem is airport employees are not customer/traveller orientated.
At least the girl spotted the discrepancies when 3 or 4 other checkpoints didn't. However, SHAME ON HER for not even trying to help and find out what went wrong. She should have at least checked the passengers list.
SHAME ON the other checkpoints that couldn't even do their job properly. If one of them, and Joan herself for that matter, had paid a little attention, they'd probably have had the time to change the ticket.

I am very sorry for what happened to Joan; at the same time, I am glad that this happened to a public figure and that she is spreading awareness on the hassles of airport security. If this happened to any ordinary US citizen, what would have been his or her fate? I am glad she is speaking out about this. Her passport didn't match her ticket. The woman who stopped her from boarding WAS doing her job - it was the other 4 checkpoints that failed. Joan got a taste of what it is like for the rest of us. If I had a ticket that had a different name from what was on my passport, I would not have been able to board. I think Joan is more upset that no one recognized her and she was treated just like everyone else - call the pilot - HA! That is privilege speaking.

Granted, it was a insensitive to deny a 76 year old woman to board a plane, but this is all post 9/11 and things have changed. Joan's handlers/assistances should have made sure that the name on the ticket was correct and she would have breezed right through. And a senior official at the airport should have stepped in and allowed her to board. guily is on both sides.

the gate agent was an idiot. passports are official documents and the information is accurate. there is never anything half-accurate on a passport. she's right, you don't go through customs and immigration, ticket agents and what have you then be refused to board at the gate. that airport needs to get with the program. too many people there dropped the ball.

Conflicting names is a security issue. There were 5 checkpoints for a reason - to crosscheck. The system worked. There is no international clause exempting celebrities from security directives because hey use multiple names. Stop whining, Ms. Rosenberg. 'Knowing who you are' isn't even a reason to give you preferential treatment. 'Who you are' is just an entertainer. That's hardly worth breaking the law for.
One would expect Rivers to be sophisticated enough 2 honor another country's laws.

Airline employees suffer from retardation and an unfounded sense of self-importance. It is unconscionable and absolutely horrendous to strand anyone in a remote area with no assistance... let alone a 76 year old woman.

I couldn't agree more!! Airport employees are some of the stupidest people in the world and that is a scary state of affairs. I have flown domestically with my passport and since they literally take 25 minutes to inspect it as if they've never seen one before, and that's IN THE US!

@cbruer for one thing she's only 74 and obviously thinks a milliion dollars of plastic surgery makes her 50 but she finally got to the issue when she admitted that the plastic surgery made it hard for her to read her own ticket which clearly said it was issed to JOSEPH and while she looks like a drag queen, her passport said her name was JOAN ROSENBERG. i would have kicked her off too. The guy on the phone was right. She should be ashamed of herself.

I can only respect and admire her - being 74 years old in such a great state physicaly and menthally. Its not her fault they messed up her boarding tickets; when it comes to women sometimes indeed it can be a jelousy (rich confident american woman, signing autographs, not everyone would like that indeed..) Some people that cant defend their rights can not have compassion for ones that can and do (that is she). She is a strong, good looking and wonderful woman.

Joan is exaggerating a bit, I was in C.R. at the same time she was,
Now, there are 3 controls leaving the country, first comes the ticket counter where seat assignment is also given, then comes immigration, and right next to that is the security check point, where they go over your baggage but not your passport. Last, the gate before boarding . This is where she was stopped by the Continental agent . Her passport was checked TWO times not 3 or 4 or 5 times as she claims.
