How is flailing and rolling falling small? Ladies please DO NOT DO THIS!!! This is dangerous on so many levels not to mention adding undue stress to shoulders, hips, and any other area not covered in padding. Yes, these falls are common in bouts when the skaters are inexperienced and that's how skaters retire.
@primalrage42 This are horrible instructional videos. Did you see the OTHER one? The superman fall? Good grief! I totally agree with you. Who is this woman? She doesn't sound like she has ANY experience in roller derby.
@pisswizard LOL YOU CANT HANDLE IT! Has naybody noticed that they just squirm about on their ass then take a few seconds to get back up? There is no point to this.
ollerbook! Hi guys i've created a brand new social networking site PURELY FOR SKATERS. Hope u'll join so we can network and grow the international skating community. @NastyNoodle It's actually extremely effective when done in high speeds. It's the same type of roll you would use in other sports like volleyball or martial arts when your forward momentum takes you to the ground and instead of trying to stop yourself, you take that momentum and roll right back up onto your skates. Far quicker than sliding out on a knee (which depending on the floor, will take you way too far away from the track). Plus, it's pretty fun.
This is a very valid technique to distribute impact through your body on a fall- she said they were still learning it- yes, it should be more hands free, and it should go more with the direction of the track (this is a corner roll, not something to do on the straights)- but no, they are not douchebags- and no, I wouldn't call it a crowd pleaser-and if you would laugh at another players technique um, pisswizard....I'd say you have a hell of a lot more to learn than barrel rolls. Peace.
@thefifthbeatle138 frankly, I've never seen a barrel roll used in a bout where a knee slide wouldn't have been several times MORE effective. Barrel rolls are inherently dangerous as they cannot ever be considered "falling small" which means this "play" can instantly be considered a penalty. There is no rule about having to get up in 3 seconds. If you have destroyed the pack by being out of play, then you have 3 seconds, but otherwise, it does not apply.
lol thats actually kind of funny

we were taught at a boot camp to do it differently and without using our hands to get up. the broken down steps were :
1 knee drop followed by your second
tuck your shoulder under so you roll onto your back
(your on your back like a dead bug as you are rolling)
Back onto your knees and stand up.... (like the first steps but backwards)
its far more effective as a lot of these girls were taking a while to stand up and using their hands!

what's with the hands on the track? This roll is do-able without using the hands at all...and it saves your digits from some serious risk.
