Reagan and Bush brought down the Wall???!!! I don't think so! Gorbachev should get the credit for his changes in Russia and allowing the Wall to come down. I watched Gorby's motorcade drive past me, here in the U.S.
just came back from Berlin. What a city, so much history, and it is clearly a mecca for freedom and democracy, thank god. Cant believe people actually called East Germany socialist. In my books, its as far from socialism as you can get- equality, anti capitalist policies at the expense of freedom just isnt good enough. Im a socialist, and would describe the Stalinist regimes in eastern Europe as nothing except real facism. thank heavens for freedom!
The fall of the Iron Curtain started back in 1978 when John Paul II was chosen. His visit to Poland in June 1979 inspired the rise of Solidarity and Lech Walesa in August of 1980. Then came Reagan and then came Gorbachev. On June 04, 1989 the Poles voted out the communists. After this historic event, things moved quickly. The Hungarians opened up the border with western Europe, the East Germans streamed in to Hungary and into West Germany. Then it was Czechoslovakia, the Berlin Wall and Romania.
its interesting how different areas give credit. id say here in germany the opinion that reagan played a major role is very rare, whereas we credit gorbachov and the peoples of east europe, mainly poles, checs, hungarians and germans(east).
we see this as an inevitable row of events, that originated within the east block, i never heard that outside pressure had a major impact.
but bush is credited for his role in the reunification process...
Meanwhile here in South America a bunch of crooks just like Hugo Chavez, Morales and Correa want to build an "invisible wall" and lead the continent to a harsh setback.....no more communism!

Sadly, they want to build a wall in my country. I say no to that wall.
