I would like to comment on the glitz and glamour Irish dance seems to have "evolved" into lately. I prefer the older style of dress and the simple headbands and natural hair styles. The wigs and tiaras are outrageous. It all reminds of Jon Benet Ramsey, if you ask me.
some of it is pretty rediculous. but most of us do it to impress the judges, if u leave ur mark on the judges, then u r more likely to place higher. it's all about doing what the judges want

I feel almost the same, but you have to realize that when a form of anything is taken away from it's origin it changes and ages much more fast then it would have if left alone, when Canada was being colonized, how many different accents/cultures were there? hundreds. now though, not even 150 years later most accents/cultures are gone and one, and if irish dance has been in different places for hundreds of years, it was bound to change
I understand what your saying but the change from the more traditional style of costume has only happended in the last twenty years at most. Costumes from the 1970s in Ireland were tasteful when compared to the sequined gaudy glitsy-glam stage Vagas ones we have today. It's all a little too showgirls and this change is tacky. I'd have loved to see a priests face if you'd have walked into a room 100 years ago dressed like that!
but no-one is walking into a church 100 years ago dressed like this. That's the difference, back then (if the 4 inch rule even existed) it was probably very tightly held, but now things have become more relaxed, people are getting what they like, not just what society says is appropriate
100 years ago girls couldn't even show their ankles in public let alone their knees. So I don't know what the costumes would have looked like, in fact that could indicate most of the costume (book of kells motifes and short skirt isn't really that old too). Still I think the tanned legs and wigs are a bit too much.
I agree about the tanned legs, I think it looks ridiculous. But wigs are very helpful, some people's hair will not curl (I have a few friends like this) and although they are ridiculously proportioned, the curls themselves look more natural with every new model that comes out. plus they are a major time saver.
Actually, girls were not allowed to dance hardshoe, only softshoe. Just like boys are not allowed to compete in Slip jig, girls were not allowed to learn heavy dances.
The reel Kelly does here is a very nice, traditional step. I really like the front click, but would like to see it demonstrated again. I don't think I've seen this move at feises yet.
Yes, I've seen front clicks at feises, but I guess Kelly's look a little different for some reason. Maybe it's because I can't see all of it because the way it was filmed. Regardless, her steps are very nice and she has really great sound. Thanks for responding.
She is so good! This is the first one that lets us see the dancer dance in detail. The foot wiggle thing at 00:23 is hilarious! I wonder if such dancers learn the silent form first and then add the tap? Looks a lot like it. I'm seeing some standard Shuffle, Flap, FlapHeel moves of tap, with way not standard lifts and crosses and kicks in there.

That is very sad. Back when I danced, solo dresses had class. Now they are just garrish and gawdy. Absolutely ugly. I can't stand it.

If you've seen any of the newer style Gavin's and Siopa Rince dresses, you'll notice they are very simple and not at all "gawdy" or "garrish"

great dancing. to stevekwik, i once met a guy like you. he sat there and made the biggest mistake of his young life. he had the courage to tell me what you just said here basically, and he found out the true meaning of the word "hardshoe". if you are honestly that uneducated as to think that the irish are stupid, then go take a history class. Ireland is the native land to some of the most well known and sophisticated poets, writers, politicians, and musicians as well as dancers.
