WOW....awesome horse, I just love it when you are the one that the crowd is going crazy about!! Its the best feeling in the WORLD, that horse can go all the way!! LOVE HIM
I love it! He (being the horse) looked completely relaxed during the entire process. A great example of what a good sliding shop should aspire to resemble!
Have a chat with your farrier, it is very important that whoever fits the shoes is experienced at working with reining horses so that they get them set up right.
awsome!!! O.O I want to do that!!!, but I can't, I'd probably fall off before the horse even stops XD, mind if I use this video (well actually just the bit of the slide stop) on a video I want to make?
does anyone know when its OK to put slidin plates on a horse for the 1st time? I have a young colt that I want to start as a reiner and Id apreciate some advice from an experienced reiner :) thanks in advance!
I would put sliding plaits on as early as possible so they get use to it. of coarse don't actually attempt a sliding stop until the horse is old enough to be ridden like that. preferably 3 years old.
Three seems QUITE young to be putting that kind of stress on them, don't you think? Our dressage horses don't even begin collected work like piaffe and passage, usually until at LEAST after five years of training, and they are usually broke at four or five. Our jumpers don't start riding until they are about four or five as well, and jumping usually occurs at six or more.
The horses wear special shoes called sliders which helps them. It puts the same kind of pressure on their hind as any stopping from a fast pace. As with any competitive activity, athletic horses can occasionally suffer performance strains and injuries. However these are no different to any other high performance equine discipline. Good prepartory training and good management with the assistance of quality medical care and supervision help lessen the extent of injury and stress related problems.
Quater horses mature differently than warmbloods do. The types of skills needed to show in a reining pen are different than those for a dressage horse or a jumper. :)
@Cristinabel7 They do start reining very young, and it's not unusual for horses to "burn out" mentally and/or physically, especially for the futurity competitions.
All that considered, Quarter Horses do mature fairly early, and starting them around 2.5 or 3 and having them in full training at 4 is fine for most of them.
@Cristinabel7 I really don't see how them sliding is putting to much pressure on them. Alot of western, english and racing events start them around three. Racing even starts them at two.

hey, nice stop, i'm puting together a database of training articles by reining, cutting and working cow horse trainers. you can check it out a horsetrainginfo . blogspot. com just remove the spaces from the adress. Any feedback would be really helpful.
What a beautiful animal! As an English rider, I was so impressed by the animals I saw at my first look at a reining event. Their temperements were second to none! You can see it here, when the rider drops the reins and the horse just chills.
thats actually how reiners train their horses; when the reins r slack and the rider's hand is resting on the withers, then the horse knows stand still.
The reverse is true as well. We should all just get along. ANY kind of equine discipline requires dedication and bravery. At the end of the day, we are all horse lovers.
My Palomino Gelding (In My Videos) Can do that , it don't show, but he can do reining, I just don't know how, He does the slide stops with me. Its so much fun. he's great Barel racing horse though.
The slide stop is one element of a Reining pattern in Westerm Riding. If you search YouTube for Jac Wonders Who you can see a clip of his whole run which shows all the elements of Reining.
Wow. That's a perfect slide. I wish my horse would stop that quick. He usually gallops off a jump and canters for quite a bit THEN slow down to a trot and THEN he stops. Lol.
Rooster tails! Beautiful!
