if the bearing was on the engine.... possibly whoever put on the belt had overtightened it, resulting in the belt being stretched and going bad, and it that was the case an overtightened belt puts pressure on the engine bearings behind the crankshaft pulley, resulting in your damaged bearing
Does it have a roof rack? Sounds like something on the outside getting wind blown over it and whistling.

If i'm not mistaken, this sound occurred in my father's old Jeep Cheeroky before he sold it. Yea it did have something to do with the belts...
