I'll bet it won't croak like that stupid 2000 Explorer if you have a good mechanic. Yes it will cost at first and burn gas but there are fewer failure points.
I love the old flatties but what's special about this one is the story. I guess you could say it was your daughter-in-law's unknown dowry. Let's hope the kids have the kind of bond their father's must have.
@wsmikey The truck yes, the motor no. Probably will take a big hammer, pry bar, vinegar, or dynamite ( whatever works best ) to get it apart. Those are the worst thing in the world for getting stuck. My opinion is because of the way condensation can run downhill around the valves and also find it's way into any cylinder with an open intake valve. I've never had the pleasure of tearing one down that wasn't stuck!
really dig your videos Mr. peek, been following them since you dragged that shed over to your yard ;-) very entertaining, lots of character ;-) got my own project, but its in the early design stages, sorting out the donor etc...
That is just awesome. It makes me kinda proud to be a gearhead when I see what other gearheads do and all the things they bring back home to rescucitate.
Hody I just happened on this vid. I thought I'd seen most of your rat rod and banjo videos. The tune could only be "Thunder Road" I have fond memories of singing this song on camping trips as a kid. I sold a flathead V8 that came out of my old "53 Ford dumptruck and an old Merc flathead . I held on to them for a long time, planning to put the merc crank in the ford motor, got too involved in other projects and passed 'em on. I kept my old terraplane nose, probably end up on a rat vehicle
I was thinking of putting this engine in the roadster, but it needs a good bit of work, and the Caddy was runnin.. I'm glad I went ahead with the project, but I still plan to get this engine running too, if I can. Maybe it'll be the next project..
that body is really fucked lol but what a find a good old flat head v8 i have a 47 ford truck with a old flattie in her that has been sitting for 30 years im going to start working on it very soon i will post videos as soon as i get started hopefully yous will check them out (:
yes possibly shes complete and looks well with no sign of moisture damaging anything ill pull the heads off her and have a look at the valves and what not and ill go from there im picking her up this sunday hopefully ill sneak a video in then good luck with pulling apart your old girl.
thats good mine is first in line second i have an old british ford a thames it runs but needs some shining up and what not but its only a 6 banger ford engine but runs very well there is a few very short videos of her on here so what do you think you will have to do to your flathead to get her running??
I like the thames.. I don't know what mine is going to go in. Figured I'd just get the motor runnin' and go through the tranny, then find something to put it in... We'll see.
Congratulations on that old flathead! What a neat find!
I know it's not American, but a friend of mine had a 1980 Suzuki GS 450L bike that he just gave to me. It sat in his garage for fourteen years! Well, the first thing we did was change the oil and put in a little starting fluid, it reluctantly fired up, backfired... and died. But dad and I have come a long way in the past couple months. It runs prety good now after all the work we put in it. This restoration has been pretty successful.
Hey, son here, just visiting said inlaws this weekend and having a wonderful time visiting. We brought my 2 boys down here so they could stay the week and go to vacation bible school at Riverside Babtist. He said he might start putting together a bulldozer he has in parts with my oldest boy's help. Wish I could teach him how to post video on youtube... but I'd have to learn to do that myself. One day.. :) Love ya dad. Talk to ya later.
K. You get ready to post I'll teach you how. Not too hard to do. Ya'll have fun with that tractor. I'm off next week. Going camping for a few days, but other than that will be puttin' the ratrod back together. The pilot bearing is in the mail. Should have it be Tuesday. She's going to be a driver soon..
THATS SWEET just picked up a 1951 4 dr,stock flathead v8,has not ran in10 yrs, hopping it will fire up first try, love the flathead sound, thats old skool.A I picked it up 4 free
As I was watching this I was thinking how COOL it would be if after they got it home, they just hooked a battery to it and a can of fuel and started it up and it ran beautifuly. Oh well, fairy tales SOMETIMES come true. ;o)
Well, what I've got in there now is not actually a boring old '350. It's a '53 Cadillac 331, which is a pretty cool motor in and of itself. And it's runable as it is right now. On the other hand, if I could get the flathead running, that'd be cool too. I've got the winter to tinker with it. The motor came out of a truck in the woods in South Georgia..
I am not a motorhead so I don't know the song. I enjoyed meeting your son's inlaws when they were here, and I am wicked excited for you to have your engine for the ratrod.

where did you get that motor from? I gotta agree it is refreshing to see a flat head going in between them rails rather then a boring ol' 350.
