The "Black Cat" graph was designed by Chinese Air Force 35th squadron that works under USA and Taiwan goverment corporation in 1960's for spy actions.
U-2s are cool. I'm just surprised that the USAF would keep around an aircraft that is so labor intensive, when it comes to weight, balance, and pogo issues.
I flew CH-47's at Camp Humphrey's and was in the 271st Avn Co (Innkeepers). Once, a U-2 made an emergency landing at Camp Humphrey's. The Inkeepers CH-47's were pulled from the hanger so the U-2 could be kept secure until it could be repaired and flown back to Osan.
This was my last aircraft I worked on in my 20 year military career. I was at Beale AFB CA. 99th RS 1997-1999 It brought back a lot of memories. I was E&E but spent lots of time in the POGO truck at PSAB and Istres Airbase.
Could the pogos not be replaced by a fix structure, not too heavy, like the Sea Harrier has, which could be folded into the wings after the take off and the opposite before landing?
Oscar lived in Spec Flight while I was there and he was a new kitty, the previous oscar lived to be nearly 25 I think? But yeh, cherish those times you had in the 80's because when I was there, it was absolute horse shit. I was all to glad to get out of that place, worst squadron I have ever been to in my life and many people would agree with me. I was there from 07-08.
Great Video...made me remember my days as a Blackcat in the 80's..."We get it up higher & keep it up longer" Is Oscar still leaving "gifts" on the Commanders desk?
I was stationed at Camp Humphreys from 1988-1989 and was in a CH-47 Chinook helicopter unit also called the Black Cats (213th Avn. Co.) I spent a lot of time at the ville outside of Osan and I remember seeing the U2s.
Had no idea that th U2 group was also called the "Black Cats"
I was at Osan 83-84. We had two U2s crash in that time span. I was on a detail that had to clean up the leaking fuel. I remember walking around a rice field with parts of that thing all over the place. I picked up a thick piece of lens as a souvenir but I have since lost it.
This brought back memories of my days with the Blackcats back in the 80's when it was Det2 9SRW We get it up higher & keep it up longer! I bet 1st. Lt. Oscar E. Blackcat is still taking a dump on the Commanders desk!
Very informative piece. I watch the Military Channel, the Discovery Channel, History Channel, National Geographic Channel... etc... and have seen lots of stories on the U2, but I was not aware of what was involved in get the bird in the air and back on the ground again. Great Job. Now do something on the A-10 that I don't know. :)
What a work horse. They used to fly over the south, Mississippi and south Carolina all the time(1990's). Think they flew out of meridian, ms.

Very good video!! I have seen the U-2 in Osan and at Beale but I surely don't know very much about it. I learned some things with this video :o)

You would think that a more easily manageable landing gear system could be installed on the U2 in place of the ghetto system currently in place.

I work down at EAA Airventure and this year I was able to go out on the runway in the "pogo" truck and pick- up the pogo's. It was insane!

Haha. Pogos was always fun, driving the pickup as fast I can.
