Just to quick add to my original comment from just now, again, since Ernie really would go out of his way to pick on Bert, like here, the way he keeps twisting Bert's request around,by drowning out quieter noises with louder ones, instead of merely turning off the water, in a real sense, he deserved to get picked on by Cookie Monster, in turn;Ernie would even say this about Cookie in sketches with Cookie, that Cookie Monster would try to trick Ernie into a joke, in general, like with Ernie's hat.
I too, sympathize with Bert-100%,for feeling the way he does, at Ernie's always going out of his way, to aggravate him. I also remember,of course,Ernie in turn, getting picked on by Cookie Monster-e.g.,where Cookie would find an excuse to destroy any of Ernie's property, like where Cookie chooses the too-small box for Ernie's new hat--you can tell he did it on purpose, for that very reason, the way he ruins the hat by eating the brim off,the point here-Ernie deserved it, for mistreating Bert.
I used to love Bert & Ernie when I was a kid but Bert used to give me the creeps. I always used to think that one day, Ernie would push Bert over the edge and he would go berserk and attack Ernie!!!
I used this skit in a funny story with Steven Wakefield and Jessica Wakefield doing everything Ernie did to drive Steve nuts with the radio and vacuum cleaner (canister) and it was funny to have Jessica and her cousins laughing like Bart and Lisa SImpson at steven going nuts!
I am 45 and I'm still LOL at this! I first saw this one when I was 5 years old. This is probably one of their best episodes. Classic Sesame Street blows away the current version.
Turning on the vaccuum to drown out radio and dripping faucet
Ernie shouting GOODNIGHT!
Bert asking why me at the end as he smacks his head on the pillow to hear Ernie snoring.
I used this in a funny story involving 4 girls making noise in the bedroom, and Steven the boy turned the loud stereo and the girls turned on the vaccuum and woke the neighbors! It was funny!
With all their antics, such as these, I'm surprised they didn't get thrown out of their apartment years ago! LOL! Seriously, Jim Henson and Frank Oz possessed true genius to create such characters who were not only funny, but truly ALIVE. They easily deserve to be remembered in the same pantheon as Laurel & Hardy or Abbott and Costello.
I gotta say, Ernie employs probably the most warped logic in solving a problem, don't you think? Not to mention Bert's suffering at his hands. Poor guy! LOL! Of course, that was the genius of Jim Henson and Frank Oz, the likes of which we'll never see again. I've always loved Oz's ad libs ("This is RIDICULOUS!"). It just showed these characters had heart. You don't see that on Sesame Street much anymore, I'm sorry to say.
There was no way I could have seen the vaudvillian influences when I first saw this 35 plus years ago but I do see now. It's really too bad certain groups had CTW and PBS put a stop to Ernie and Bert together like this.
@grasimpson He's all like "What did I do to deserve this?" Somehow, I can relate with Bert in this scenario. By the way, Bert, have you ever thought of earplugs?
Wow.I remember looking at sooo much of Bert and Ernie skit when I was younger(much younger)and i used to get angry at ernie sometimes, becuz I thought he was being unfair to bert.lol!!!But these two are part of classic S.S.
It was great how they did this. The set was on a pedestal kinda like a bird table with Frank Oz and Jim Henson standing (or squatting) beneath it and the cameras were jacked really high to be on level with it.
I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised if Jim Henson and Frank Oz had sore throats after performing this skit! It's hilarious! I have Old School Sesame Street Volume 1, and this classic memory is included! Thanks!
Methinks I see a vicious cycle here....Ernie will wake up the next morning with a whale of a sore throat, he'll be drinking water all day, forget to turn the water off just before going to bed, and...well, let's just say Bert will have to wear earplugs with his favorite marching band music, to help put him to sleep, for the next week or two...
More great incidental music during and after the skit!!
Classic Bert & Ernie. What I want to know is who is the Trumpet soloist and band? What a kickin' jazz chart! With the time period it could have been Doc Severinsen with that clear sound and flashy improvising...great funky playing too...AWESOME!
I have the "Old School Sesame Street: Volume 1" DVD (and plan to get the second one soon). This sketch is included, and rightfully so! Thanks for posting this priceless clip! Just another perfect example of Jim Henson and Frank Oz's chemistry.
it's funny only now when i'm older i can sympethise with bert. When i was little i always was on ernie's side. I feel so sorry for bert. if i was him i would've given up on ernie a long time ago.
It brings memories...my sister got up early for work, I walked around making noise for a snack at two, and my brother got up at six for work, and my Mom woke up every time then.
I love this it's so funny. I love the bitm when Bert says Why did you put the vacum cleaner on. Then Ernie says WHAT BERT. Then Bert says WHY DID YOU PUT THE VACUM CLEANER ON. So funny

He does not! In fact, Children's Television Workshop developmental psychologists say that Bert and Ernie exist to show young viewers the nature of friendships and different "ways of knowing and understanding." Kids are still learning about relationships so Bert and Ernie are a colorful, funny vehicle for this.

Nothing can beat that upbeat jazzy radio music! I'd KILL to get that on an MP3

Ernie should've turned the TV on full blast to drown out the vacuum! Great clip!

That's weird sounding country music at the end.

Why didn't Bert just turn the water off himself?

1. If you were paying attention, Ernie offered to "take care of it"
2. Had Bert done that in the 1st place, where would we be? Asleep, just like Ernie & Bert!

But then Ernie would begin snoring sooner so it would not matter.

I honestly think Ernie does those things on purpose just to rouse up Bert. This is so hilarious! I'm laughing so much my throat's hurting!

Thank you for posting! This is one of my favorite Ernie and Bert clips. It used to have me on the floor with laughter when I was a kid.
