  • Just to quick add to my original comment from just now, again, since Ernie really would go out of his way to pick on Bert, like here, the way he keeps twisting Bert's request around,by drowning out quieter noises with louder ones, instead of merely turning off the water, in a real sense, he deserved to get picked on by Cookie Monster, in turn;Ernie would even say this about Cookie in sketches with Cookie, that Cookie Monster would try to trick Ernie into a joke, in general, like with Ernie's hat.

  • I too, sympathize with Bert-100%,for feeling the way he does, at Ernie's always going out of his way, to aggravate him. I also remember,of course,Ernie in turn, getting picked on by Cookie Monster-e.g.,where Cookie would find an excuse to destroy any of Ernie's property, like where Cookie chooses the too-small box for Ernie's new hat--you can tell he did it on purpose, for that very reason, the way he ruins the hat by eating the brim off,the point here-Ernie deserved it, for mistreating Bert.

  • Ernie is always annoying Bert in the middle of the night.

  • @ 2:15 ROFL

  • This reminds me of that Donald Duck cartoon where Donald can't sleep because of a loud, dripping faucet that won't stop dripping.

  • but you can still hear the water dripping over the radio

  • 'G'NIGHT!'

  • lol

  • Ernie, you're snorin'!

  • 3:20 he's sleeping with his face in the pillow !!! can he not breath ?!?

  • @bahbleu ikr same Lool

  • ROFL XDDD

  • 0:23 Bert keeps moving !!!

  • 2:47 ROFLOL!!!!!! I love Ernie and Bert ♥

  • Ernie is the most epic troll, ever.

  • Ernie should go into politics. He has the perfct personality for it. (Not solving any problem, and yet covering himself by creating other problems.)

    Ernie for President!

  • Halarious!

  • I used to love Bert & Ernie when I was a kid but Bert used to give me the creeps. I always used to think that one day, Ernie would push Bert over the edge and he would go berserk and attack Ernie!!!

  • I think its at 2:13 but when bert looks at the camerea becasue of the raido, He looks like he wants to punch Ernie.

  • I used this skit in a funny story with Steven Wakefield and Jessica Wakefield doing everything Ernie did to drive Steve nuts with the radio and vacuum cleaner (canister) and it was funny to have Jessica and her cousins laughing like Bart and Lisa SImpson at steven going nuts!

  • I am 45 and I'm still LOL at this! I first saw this one when I was 5 years old. This is probably one of their best episodes. Classic Sesame Street blows away the current version.

  • Bert: I'm gonna shut down that Radio Right now!!! I'M GONNA!!! 2:50 I HATE THAT MUSIC.

  • ...and ernie starts snoring.

  • ha sometimes the water dripping at home used too drive me mad lol geehs this is so funny doh.

  • no matter what age I am, this skit always cracks me up. think I have it recorded.

  • Haha that was brilliant.

  • GOODNITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This has to be one of the funniest Bert and Ernie episodes ever. I remember seeing this in the early 70's never thought I would see it again.

Thank you for much for posting this.....I wish I was 7 years old again !

  • This is really funny, just getting crazy with loud sound in the middle of the night. It's insane situation before sleeping!

  • Favorite segments:

    Turning on the radio

    Bert getting mad

Turning on the vaccuum to drown out radio and dripping faucet

    Ernie shouting GOODNIGHT!

Bert asking why me at the end as he smacks his head on the pillow to hear Ernie snoring.

I used this in a funny story involving 4 girls making noise in the bedroom, and Steven the boy turned the loud stereo and the girls turned on the vaccuum and woke the neighbors! It was funny!

  • Thanks for sharing these priceless old skits!!

  • 2:45 Ernie shouting GOODNIGHT always gets me. I loved Jim and Frank's interactions through their characters.

  • so it was a vacuum cleaner, according to my bembory, I thought it was a sound of a Power tools, like a circulator saw.

  • IM GONA!.......turn the radio off

  • I don't remember this one, but funny.

  • that last snore right at the very end sounded funny

  • Ernie's got great taste in music!!

  • it sounded like he said "sweet dreams bert"...then bert said "not gay"

  • With all their antics, such as these, I'm surprised they didn't get thrown out of their apartment years ago! LOL! Seriously, Jim Henson and Frank Oz possessed true genius to create such characters who were not only funny, but truly ALIVE. They easily deserve to be remembered in the same pantheon as Laurel & Hardy or Abbott and Costello.

  • That station is playing some funky music late at night....I love it!!!

  • Ernie's last snore sounds like after he's been in toxic waste & turned into a snoring monster. Otherwise, it's annoying & scares me a bit.

  • ah the good old days!!!

  • A stonewall classic E&B sketch, probably the best ever :-)

  • poor bert i feel sorry for him

  • LOL! Kermit and Fozzie are sleeping together.

  • What a depression eliminator!

  • I can actually still hear the water dripping over the radio, but barely when Ernie turns the vaacum on.

  • I was laughing so hard the way Ernie said "GOODNIGHT!" at 2:48

    XDDD

  • @Purpleicious6666 Yes, this and Bert yelling at him to "STAY WHERE YOU ARE!" were always the parts that cracked me up even as a kid.

  • Just stuff a sock into Ernie's mouth, Bert! That's what I would do!

  • If I had a roomate like Ernie I'd wind up a crack addict!

  • I gotta say, Ernie employs probably the most warped logic in solving a problem, don't you think? Not to mention Bert's suffering at his hands. Poor guy! LOL! Of course, that was the genius of Jim Henson and Frank Oz, the likes of which we'll never see again. I've always loved Oz's ad libs ("This is RIDICULOUS!"). It just showed these characters had heart. You don't see that on Sesame Street much anymore, I'm sorry to say.

  • There was no way I could have seen the vaudvillian influences when I first saw this 35 plus years ago but I do see now. It's really too bad certain groups had CTW and PBS put a stop to Ernie and Bert together like this.

  • 1:34 The obnoxious jazz music and Bert's accompanying reaction. LMAO

  • Bert at 2:18.

  • Sounded like Ernie was dreaming he was at the dentist at the very end.

  • great ernie and bert seasme street skits

  • I think it's hysterical when Bert yells "I'M GONNA SHUT THIS RADIO OFF NOW! I'M GONNA.....shut the radio off."

  • I think Bert's facial expressions when Ernie turns on the radio and vacuum cleaner are hysterical.

  • What is the song on the raido?

  • @chowder707 I'm curious about that too.. kinda funky.. u could hear it on ernie and bert and the radio knob

  • Why do they play the music at the end of alot of these bert and ernie skits? And has there been one without it?

  • "I'M GOING TO SHUT THIS RADIO OFF NOW!!! I'M GONNA...umm I shut the radio off now, now I'm gonna get the water."

  • i love bert's reaction to the vaccum cleaner noise. ROFL. <3

  • @bahbleu Good heavens! I thought Bert peed himself.

  • One of the best skits ever. CLASSIC. Haven't seen since I was a kid.

    WONDERFUL

  • no I can't hear the water dripping now, BUT I CAN HEAR THE RADIO !!! LOL one of the best skits ever..

  • my GOSH these Ernie and Bert skits are sooo funny. I miss those days

  • Poor Bert, "It's not fair."

  • I love that look on berts face at 3:53. He looks like he's gonna say "Why god, why do you make me suffer?"

  • @grasimpson He's all like "What did I do to deserve this?" Somehow, I can relate with Bert in this scenario. By the way, Bert, have you ever thought of earplugs?

  • auhauhauha!!! I love too much Ernie in this episode!!

  • This sketch appears on:

    "Sesame Street" episode 0131 (November 9, 1970)

    "Sesame Street" episode 0793 (April 30, 1975)

    "Sesamstrasse" Folge 2326 (2005)

  • I LOVE THEM!!!! LOLOLOLOL....hehehehhehehe

  • Bert: It's not fair. hahaha

  • GOODNIGHT!!!

    i love Bert and Ernie

  • wat you doing down there 0:00 to o:11

  • Bert's exercising

  • berts lazy

  • I'M GONNA TURN THIS RADIO OFF NOW!!!

  • Bert's reactions to the radio blaring and the vacuum cleaner are beyond priceless! Best Sesame Street clip ever!! :)

  • Like the music on the radio.

  • Wow.I remember looking at sooo much of Bert and Ernie skit when I was younger(much younger)and i used to get angry at ernie sometimes, becuz I thought he was being unfair to bert.lol!!!But these two are part of classic S.S.

  • It was great how they did this. The set was on a pedestal kinda like a bird table with Frank Oz and Jim Henson standing (or squatting) beneath it and the cameras were jacked really high to be on level with it.

  • Jim Henson went to my school :)

  • I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised if Jim Henson and Frank Oz had sore throats after performing this skit! It's hilarious! I have Old School Sesame Street Volume 1, and this classic memory is included! Thanks!

  • Methinks I see a vicious cycle here....Ernie will wake up the next morning with a whale of a sore throat, he'll be drinking water all day, forget to turn the water off just before going to bed, and...well, let's just say Bert will have to wear earplugs with his favorite marching band music, to help put him to sleep, for the next week or two...

More great incidental music during and after the skit!!

  • lol true

  • What Song Is That From The Radio By,Doc Severinsen

  • Poor Bert - - doesn't he ever get a break?

  • Classic Bert & Ernie. What I want to know is who is the Trumpet soloist and band? What a kickin' jazz chart! With the time period it could have been Doc Severinsen with that clear sound and flashy improvising...great funky playing too...AWESOME!

  • OMG! I actually remember this one!

  • (02:59) Don't strain yourself, Bert.

  • bert has a lot to put up with, no wonder he has such little hair

  • It's a wonder they never got any complaints from any of their neighboring tennants about all the noise they made in their apartment.

(Incidently I noticed that the letter E is missing from the frame of Ernie's bed.)

  • LOL

  • I have the "Old School Sesame Street: Volume 1" DVD (and plan to get the second one soon). This sketch is included, and rightfully so! Thanks for posting this priceless clip! Just another perfect example of Jim Henson and Frank Oz's chemistry.

  • Well that's one way to cover each noise of the water dripping, the radio, and the vacume cleaner.

  • I love Ernie's attitude of "Make me get out of bed, will you? Well take this!" in this skit.

  • I loved the groovy music...I wonder what station back in the day was jammin late at night like that...lol

  • omg.

    good old days .

    Lol

im like 15 now aha i use to watch this when i was like 5 (: cuute miss it

  • ROFL at 2:47 when Ernie BELLOWS "Goodnight". Again, teaching Bert to NEVER complain!

  • This is the one I remember the most.

  • it's funny only now when i'm older i can sympethise with bert. When i was little i always was on ernie's side. I feel so sorry for bert. if i was him i would've given up on ernie a long time ago.

  • It brings memories...my sister got up early for work, I walked around making noise for a snack at two, and my brother got up at six for work, and my Mom woke up every time then.

  • It brings back memories....I pretend as Ernie (I was 10) and Bert (my sister is about 7 or 8))...priceless!

  • I love this it's so funny. I love the bitm when Bert says Why did you put the vacum cleaner on. Then Ernie says WHAT BERT. Then Bert says WHY DID YOU PUT THE VACUM CLEANER ON. So funny

  • My all time favorite tv characters!

  • Ernie and Bert were great back then. You can bet they,re not as funny today.

  • I'm 29 and love bert and ernie. They crack me up. lol

  • Ernie's snoring always crack me up! xD

  • Ernie: ZZZZZZ Shhh ZZZZZ Shhh ZZZZZZ Shhh

    Bert: Ernie Ernie You're snoring

Ernie: ZZZZZZ Shh ZZZZZ shhh ZZZZZ Shhh

    Bert Ernie

  • @lizzykat2

    Ernie: SSSNNNKKKZZZZZZZZKKKKK!!!!!!

Bert: It's not fair, it's just not fair! (hides head in pillow)

  • Hilarious! My grandma and I used to play at being ernie and bert when i was little.Course I was ALWAYS Ernie!Haha!lol.I never did this to her of course

  • does anyone have the appliance war sketch?

  • Good stuff. Ernie lives to annoy Bert.

  • Poor Ernie He falls asleep before Bert does

    He must be tired

  • I think Bert needs to invest in some earplugs lol

  • This is hilarious. I about died.

  • I love this bit. The way Bert spazzes when Ernie turns on the radio, and the combination of that bad 70s jazzish/discoish music. LOL... priceless.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • You know bert. Ernie saids. Staying up all night is better then sleeping! lol!

  • Lovley very clasic very funny

  • anything for you Bert

  • heh Ernie snores!!

  • Probably the funniest Bert and Ernie sketch. A close second is when Ernie breaks the sugar bowl. I never tire of watching this.

  • What about the ice cream soda? And the Bert statue? And - last one - pizza and grape juice?

  • "ERNIE!"

    "YES BERT?"

    "ERNIE WHAT IS THAT?"

    "O THAT'S THE RADIO BERT!"

    "ERNIE THE RADIO!?"

"YEA U SAID U COULDN'T SLEEP WITH THE FAUCET DRIPPING BERT, SO I BET U CANT HEAR THAT WATER DRIPPING NOW"

"ERNIE, NO NO I CAN'T HEAR THE WATER DRIPPING BUT I CAN HEAR THE RADIO, AND U KNOW WHAT ERNIE, I CAN'T SLEEP WITH THE RADIO"

that's a perfect example of what to expect in college

  • Ernie, stay where you are don't move!

    OK, Bert! GOODNIGHT!

  • lol poor Bert. You know Ernie does it on purpose just to drive him crazy.

  • He does not! In fact, Children's Television Workshop developmental psychologists say that Bert and Ernie exist to show young viewers the nature of friendships and different "ways of knowing and understanding." Kids are still learning about relationships so Bert and Ernie are a colorful, funny vehicle for this.

  • i allways as a child that bert looked cinda like a banana lol

  • Oh wow, this brings back memories! So hilarious, so timeless!

  • What is the song on the raido?

  • probably a Raposo composition

  • lol i haven't seen this in 30 years...freaking hilarious!!

  • Why'd you turn the vacuum cleaner on?

    What's that Bert, I can't hear you?

I SAID WHY'D YOU TURN THE VACUUM CLEANER ON?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my brother and I use to laugh at when Bert would sit up at the sound of the vacume. My brother always did berts reaction b4 he even did it. OH those were the days

  • Freakin' hilarious!!!

I'M GONNA SHUT THIS RADIO OFF NOW!!!!!

    I'M GONNA...!!!!!

  • no I can't hear the faucet anymore BUT I CAN HEAR THE RADIO !!!!

  • Moral of the story is never to give Ernie such vague instructions. i.e. "Do something about that water dripping". Bert's reaction to when Ernie turned on the radio is classic!

  • oh YEAH !!!!!!! My favorite E & B sketch of all time !!! This is STILL funny,. 30 some years later and it still holds water (no pun intd.)

  • GOODNIGHT!!! XD

    I'm still laughing!

  • I think I speak for everyone here who wants to know where to get that funky music from!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA My sides hurt from laughing too hard!!

  • HA-HA-HA-HA!! So GD funny! I thought the ending music was freaking strange. Speaking of music, you can also hear that funky music that was on the radio on "Bert and Ernie and the Radio Knob" clip.

  • Hilarious beyond words! Just the way I remember it. The funniest thing, besides infuriated Bert's voice, is despite the loud music and even louder vacuum cleaner, you can STILL hear the water dripping! Many Ernie and Bert segments end with Bert stuffing his face into the pillow. They are truly the "Odd Couple" of "Sesame Street". Thank you very much, wattamack4.

  • This clip was so funny. Bert sure got mad here.

  • omg I LOVE THIS LOL......

    Ernie: "GOODNIIIGHT!!"

  • I feel Bert's pain.

  • Another example of "Ernie logic"...my husband and I see this every day. As in the case of my dad's ladder made out of cardboard boxes...that really was a winner! Wish I had video of his ass hitting the ground, and my mother chewing him a new hole!

  • Your Dad's ladder of card board boxes!? Don't mean to be nosy, but do tell. Sounds funny!

  • Ernie & Bert are really hilarious. I love it when Bert gets aggravated when Ernie does something wrong "Why'd you turn the vaccum cleaner on!" and "I'm gonna shut this radio off right now!

    Hysterical.

  • GOODNIGHT!!!! LOL! I love it!

  • LOL...I'd have to rank this #4 of all Ernie and Bert scripts. Does anyone know how I can find the one when Ernie has string tied to his fingers?

  • I think it might be here on YouTube. I maybe also saw it on Sesame Workshop.

  • haha that was awesome. Haha the radio and then the vacuum cleaner hahaha... Sooo good.

  • Ha Ha Ha!!!!! I love it when Bert stuffs his face in his pillow in dispair. That is so funny! And I totally remember that.

  • What is this song on the raido?

  • I don't know.

  • But it's great, though, isn't it? When I was watching this as a kid, I was kinda disappointed when the radio finally got turned off

  • Gotta love that psychedelic country music at the end!

  • Nothing can beat that upbeat jazzy radio music! I'd KILL to get that on an MP3

  • Ernie should've turned the TV on full blast to drown out the vacuum! Great clip!

  • XD They're like an old married couple.

  • That's weird sounding country music at the end.

  • yeah they seemed to have some of the weirdest incidental music on this show...

  • Why didn't Bert just turn the water off himself?

  • 1. If you were paying attention, Ernie offered to "take care of it"

    2. Had Bert done that in the 1st place, where would we be? Asleep, just like Ernie & Bert!

  • But then Ernie would begin snoring sooner so it would not matter.

  • I honestly think Ernie does those things on purpose just to rouse up Bert. This is so hilarious! I'm laughing so much my throat's hurting!

  • Thank you for posting! This is one of my favorite Ernie and Bert clips. It used to have me on the floor with laughter when I was a kid.

  • Me too!

  • I'm still on the floor laughing!

  • oh ernie! what a great idea:)
