High guys! if you're a marijuana enthusiast please do me a quick favor and sign this petition to legalize marijuana for Maine, this is not just to legalize marijuana either, this is for the sake of humanity, here in Maine if this passes we will be able to utilize industrial hemp and all it's benefits. Over Grow!
I love when people get up in arms about legalization/taxation of marijuana. there are definitely going to be extreme pot heads. have we not had drunks and winos since spirits were procured? most people will use it within their tolerances and won't ruin their lives with it. at least this way if they are blowing their money on weed the government gets a cut and we might be able to keep public programs running.
What drives me crazy is that Hemp the plant has totally beneficial effects for America. The sheer industry that could result from legalization is astounding. I have read that there are over 25,000 products that could be manufactured from the product. It drives me crazy that the original reason it was outlawed was because of industry influence and now we are so desperate that it has to change. Peak oil changes everything. Many items that are manufactured from oil can be manufactured from hemp.
Of course you are right. There is Barney Frank's video right on this channel to prove me wrong in my statement. What I wanted to say was that LD 1543 is the first bill originated by a legislator. Prop. 19 was an initiative, as have been other efforts. Can you name another actual bill proposed by an elected rep for full legalization? Frank's bill just gets the feds out if the act. Russell LEGALIZES.
@fairytalegod - Alcohol can't lead to harder drugs because, according to Andrew Weil and other experts, alcohol is the hardest drug of all, as addictive as heroin but much more harmful in terms of mortality, disease, and deadly violence.
The only other contender might be nicotine, the most addictive drug, but few would consider even that death toll less socially damaging than the violence of alcohol.
@okendido But they do try and push those drugs on people. They may not lace anything of give away free samples but they do try and get people using it.
Alcohol doesn't lead to other harder drugs because you can get alcohol from a legitimate establishment that would not want to hurt their business with illegal drug sales. In the same way, legalizing marijuana would break the link between it, and other illegal drugs. Rep. Russell is totally right on this.
@okendido, its not a myth, a close friend of mine received a bag laced with crystal meth and was told it was just 'really good white widow'. It was just normal brick, but with the meth crystals ground into it, it looked like widow. they're lucky, they're okay and not addicted or anything, but they said it was very scary and now they're deeply mistrustful of dealers. A million thumbs up to Diane Russell

You are full of shit. That never happened to your friend. Its cheaper to buy high grade weed and sell it for profit than it is to buy different drugs and mix them to pass them off as high grade weed.

When I was 15 or so it was easier to get some weed than a bottle of alcohol. Just sayin'.

@awake4life And furthermore, it can be produced by *anyone*. Oh my god. The number of cottage industries this could create just boggles the mind!

It took a few tries to get the first civil rights, environmental, and gay rights bills passed. Major social change takes time.
What this video shows is the moment when an elected official, for the first time in history, crosses the line and starts the debate.
